  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Holiday Update + IPP2 Preview Build

For Helium, if you set the ISO to 1280 you'll get very similar degree of highlight protection that Dragon gets at ISO800. You can do that because of the lower noise and higher sensitivity of the Helium sensor.

GRAEME IS ON A ROLL! Thanks for this, hugely helpful.

Blue LEDs are out of gamut for most colour spaces. IPP2 gently folds them into gamut in a way that preserves their hue and detail. The code was tricky to get right, but I'm very happy with the results. The example images above show mapping of raw colours through to REC709 colour space (which is about the most restrictive space you'll normally come across) and the full system is set up to do the same folding process for any colour space you ask of it. The IPP2 preview in Helium equipped cameras is set to map to REC709, but in the RedCine-X build you can choose from other standard colour spaces and get the same results.

As you say Grand Master!

Hi Jarred and Brent, is the Monochrome Scarlet W still planned for early 2017?

Yes, sir.

Any update on the 1 TB Mini Mags? They've been unavailable for awhile

Early January….

All, note we will be creating a dedicated IPP2 FAQ section of RED.com. As we get questions, we will update. So by official launch, we should have pretty robust info for you...

Hi Graeme or Phil,

I was under the impression that Helium is about 1 stop more sensitive than Dragon, so if I usually rate Dragon at 800 on bright sunny days, shouldn't Helium be at 1600?

At 1280, Helium wouldn't Helium be only 1/2 stop more sensitive than Dragon? Hoping that it's at least 1 stop more sensitive.

Thanks for any info.

Thanks Jarred, Brent, Graeme, and RED Team!

THe exact number is somewhere between ISOs. 1280 is pretty close but a smidgen low. ISO1600 on Helium is very good indeed and certainly a really valid choice.

Add: also dependent upon a whole bunch of other factors - OLPF choice, precise colour temperature of the light we're talking about and so on.

so, I am sorry, we want to use what gama and what "look"?

I have been using RWG and RLF

So if you're shooting with the IPP2 preset in your Helium, it will be doing RWG/Log3G10 with an IPP2 Preview LUT. To get that look in post, either use the IPP2 preview REDCine-X and the default REC709/BT1886 settings will get you the same look in post. For a grading workflow, raw develop to RWG/Log3G10 and use the 3D cube LUT saved alongside the R3D as a view LUT to grade ahead of.

thanks Graeme sorry if this has been covered, where is the lut? I use FCPX so I am going to batch change everything in FCPX and then put the lut on in FCPX

Quick questions for Graeme, I found the highest default ISO on Epic-W was 3200, the others were hidden, and I had to Add them from the Custom List, is there a reason for that?

Thanks for the response Graeme.

So if I'm using Standard OLPF, would it be safe to have my baseline be 1600 ISO for Helium?

On Scarlet-W, I've been using 800 as baseline - 800 outdoors and 400 low light when I can control the lighting. So on Helium with Standard OLPF, is it safe for me to go up one stop - 800 and 1600 respectively? That extra stop of light would be huge.

Excited for the Epic-W which I should be getting sometime soon (finger's crossed).

Appreciate all that Red does.

When IPP2 preview active in camera it will save alongside the R3D.

No idea! Sorry!

My Weapon MG to Weapon Helium upgrade got allocated late November and arrived at RED Dec. 1. I was initially told 7-10 business days for the turnaround, but I just got word from my rep that it isn't expected to ship out for another 2-3 weeks. What's the deal with the delay?

I got the same message, sent in my camera thinking "ok, just a couple weeks" and was told that now it will be next year, hopefully in January but for sure in the first quarter. I wish the time gape form sending in my camera to getting the new one could be tightened up a bit. I understand thought if a bunch of upgrade MG cameras coming all at the same time then things could slow down, just the way it is.

I like to think about picking a starting point ISO and adjusting if necessary for the scene. It's hard for me to offer better advice than to try it and see. I don't think you'll go far wrong picking an ISO one stop higher than you usually would, but do look at your exposure meters (particularly any that indicate raw clipping) and adjust accordingly.

I can calibrate but only limited to 3 calibration settings. I calibrated for a regular one, 120fps and another for 300fps. Is 3 saved calibrations the limit with the new firmware?
