  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Holiday Update + IPP2 Preview Build

Still taking that one day by day because it literally changes day by day.

O.K. maybe by the time my place in line comes up for the Helium sensor loaner you may have a better feel for the vV wait.

Would be helpful if you could post a sort of running appraisal from time to time, both plus and minus, of pre-order fulfillments.

My Weapon MG to Weapon Helium upgrade got allocated late November and arrived at RED Dec. 1. I was initially told 7-10 business days for the turnaround, but I just got word from my rep that it isn't expected to ship out for another 2-3 weeks. What's the deal with the delay?

Blue LEDs are out of gamut for most colour spaces. IPP2 gently folds them into gamut in a way that preserves their hue and detail. The code was tricky to get right, but I'm very happy with the results. The example images above show mapping of raw colours through to REC709 colour space (which is about the most restrictive space you'll normally come across) and the full system is set up to do the same folding process for any colour space you ask of it. The IPP2 preview in Helium equipped cameras is set to map to REC709, but in the RedCine-X build you can choose from other standard colour spaces and get the same results.

Super impressed and happy you were able to figure that one out ... going to come in super handy for stage and concert work. Thank you for the explanation! So many props to you and the team.

So, just to understand, is IPP2 replacing RWG/3G10? How are they related?

They're related. RWG/Log3G10 is the first part of the IPP2 system. RWG/Log3G10 work under the original image processing pipeline (in our older cameras and in RedCine-X) and IPP2 uses a raw development to RWG/Log3G10 as the first part of the new pipeline. What we're previewing today in Helium cameras is the last stage of the new IPP2 pipeline that converts the RWG/Log3G10 out to a viewable image targeting a display with REC709 primaries and BT1886 gamma. In the REDCine-X IPP2 preview there are more colour space and gamma options for that final stage of IPP2.

Graeme, I take it this mapping to REC709 is just for the preview build?

... Thanks for everything all around, and Happy Holidays!

The Helium camera preview build is just that - a preview rather than the whole IPP2 system. For the preview we just did the sensible limitation to REC709 primaries and BT1886 gamma for the final image (as that coincides with a typical HD monitor or on-camera LCD) and just as the REDCine-X preview gives more monitoring options, so will the full IPP2 system as it makes its way into camera.

Looking really good. Looking to send in my payment finally for SW deposit to EW hopefully by Monday to beat the deadline. Very excited about that.

They key is figuring out a general solution (that works tastefully with all colour spaces, SDR, HDR etc.) rather than a specific solution. That's why IPP2 is a system.

Nice!

Love Helium already and looking forward to the new Color Science...

Btw, I totally knew it it would have happened this way with "RAVEN"... :)

Thanks Ketch! IPP2 is more than just colour science though. It's a whole new system of raw development that takes the measured data and colorimetry aspects (which I'd refer to as the colour science) and uses that data in new ways to render images that look great. I'm really looking forwards to seeing what you do with it.

Welcome :) Nice to hear this :)

Great and amazing work for new color science guysss:)
Graeme best ever .

You know, I'd noticed that the price/performance on Raven and even Scarlet-W were more aggressive than Scarlet-X and I'd wondered how generous the margins were. I know you really don't want to but maybe you're going to have to do a price increase for everyone who doesn't have their order in by X date.

Having done upgrade programs quite a few times, we have pretty good historical data on TATs. We have data that if we allocated X cameras, we expect Y cameras to come in in a week, Z in a month, etc etc. And, to be frank, you folks are jumping on this upgrade a heckuva lot quicker than we anticipated so we are doing our best to recover on a host of levels: people, parts, etc. Needless to say, we have stopped doing upgrade blasts until we are caught up...

Apologies and I know it sucks. Upgrade programs are a b*tch to forecast and admin. But worth it : )

Raven

Only word that really comes to mind is Clusterfuck. We will ship almost 5x as many Raven's this month as we did last month but the orders keep coming in unfortunately faster than we can push them down... it feels like a never ending battle.

Thanks for the Update Jarred. Is there any chance to get a rough info for when you estimate people with a FEB-16 time-stamp might hypothetically get their cameras. Just an estimate. :)

Cannot really open that can of worms with even a guesstimate right now as now that we have re-opened the path to allow RAVEN deposit holders to shift to SCARLET-W, the landscape may change a lot. Or it might not.

Thought as much, but it was worth a try. Thanks guys.

Yeah, clearly priced a bit too low for what it offers.

But the Raven queue is now a YEAR long? Wow. What a bummer for the Raven customers even though its popularly isn't surprising given its price point and features. And now with RedWideGamutRGB even if it's only in post, it's rather sweet little camera.

Awesome :)

So how are we supposed to use this preview software ?

I just installed this new FW and am doing some quick tests at home in a room lit by Philips Hue bulbs, (a few different colors, Blue, Red, etc...). The Red bulb especially looked terrible with any existing color science on previews FW. I tried switching to RWG and it looks way better already, the roll-off is much nice (not that over-saturated flat Yellow anymore), but it still looks more yellow-orange than Red. Dragon also had issues with these kind of reds.

Anyway, to try out IPP2, are we supposed to switch to "graded" LOG3G10 and RWG, and activate the included IPPZ preview LUT ? Or what's the idea ?

Thanks :)

Trying to do a new sensor calibration on the new firmware... it keeps failing on Capture 0. The "Sensor calibration is out of date" message pops up mid-calibration, and when I say "OK" (because, come on, I'm already doing it! get out of my way, message!) it pops up with a "failed" message.

Not sure if it's failing and then the "out of date" notification was waiting to pop up, or if the notification popping up is causing the failure... any quick suggestions?

Looking at the preview RCX build, I'm also a bit lost about how we are supposed to use that one, which settings we should select and so on. The old Gamma curves seem to be gone too. And all the files seem to load using REC709 color space and BT1886 gamma, even if I used different ones in camera.
And last thing, where do I find the IPP2 LUT that you put in the new firmware ? Or is there a way re-call that one directly through RDX without using the 3D LUT Post tool ?

Just set color space and gamma to what you want, no need for a LUT. That is the new IPP2 processing.
