  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

History...

Really.. time flies by :- ( I remember every single incident Jim posted, except a few photos and logos.
I believe I have been on Reduser just about everyday since the end of 2006.. it really became a part of my life.

Heartwarming and inspiring thread. As a fine art stills guy, and with nothing more than a couple of short films and music videos behind me, I am slowly beginning to see the light after a brutal past decade. Next camera will be a RED, and I can only hope that the things I make on it will be good enough to be considered as a worthwhile "thank you" to Jim, and the RED team.

This thread is awesome... thank you for putting it together! It is truly a fantastic trip down memory lane. I remember hearing about a "dream camera," I think in Dec of 2005 on both DVinfo and DVXUSER, if memory serves me correctly. Then when the Red website put up the sensor size comparison with the drag racing car, I can recall just going on there once in a while and trying to wrap my head around how amazing this camera had the potential of being (boy I had no idea, lol).

I recall going to NAB in 2006, got there on Wed after most of you were gone, but it was inspiring none-the-less. I remember the first still of the watch that was released. The footage of Jim's Porsche, which firmly certified, in my mind, that this project was really going to work! I remember going to see the first screening of the 4K milk girls footage in LA and for the first time really feeling like a part of this community, as we all sat there with our jaws on the floor after viewing the footage. I recall leaving that screening giddy, realizing that I was really going to shoot on a camera that could actually produce THAT!

I don't post all that often, and I don't personally know about 98% of the members on here, but in another way I feel like I know you all. I'm not really a big forum person in gerneral, but I couldn't imagine life without Reduser.

Thank you Jim, Jared, and the Red team for bringing this dream to life and not allowing setbacks or obstacles derail the process. This camera has truly allowed me to change my life. My wife and I now run our own production company and wake up every morning almost not believing how cool our job is!

Thank you to everyone else out there for the posts... for being generous with your experiences and knowledge. I've learned so much over the past, almost 6 years and hope to continue to grow with RED, this camera, and all of you!

Cheers,

Omar

That's a fascinating read. It would be really cool to hear some details like:
In 2005 we tested xx sensor technologies.
Raw recording is the way to go was decided on ?
In 2006 we had xx engineers and today we count xxx.

I'd love to see pictures of those old RED prototypes/mock-ups that were talked about back in the day before there was anything to be bought. The ones with fiber optic tethering and all the other interesting, but never seen features.

Speaking of history...this thread reminded me of when I got a shirt sent to me by DeBranne from DVXuser a number of years ago.

Terrible photo but:

mail

Gotta upgrade the shirt to go with the EPIC now :thumbup1:

That shot you posted of your swollen knee was insane... got me freaked out of all spiders for months.

ya know... your'e never more than five feet from a spider. True!

Back on topic.... the first time I'd ever heard of RED was through Mike Curtis' HD4Indies site.... made me really excited! Back then... I was shooting on sony z1's and had all my footy go through Nattress plug-ins to make it look even half way decent..... small world eh?

I sold every camera, light, steadicam, and any other "not needed now" gear I had ( even my trusted hassy system I'd had since the late 80's ) and bought RED One 6022 in the spring of 09.... was the best thing I've ever done!

Group hug!!!!!

The History thread is fantastic. Moved me into posting for the first time. I've been following Red from far back in 2007. I've never owned a Red, but I've seen loads of it in my work as AC and now DOP. It had its problems, but as in every relationships what counts its how it develops. Can't wait to be owning an Epic one day. Thanks Jim for this roller coaster!

The history thread is indeed inspiring.

The single most thing that has affected me is this in a positive way bit crazy idea to build a camera oneself as there's no proper ones available. But then I got the point of making a camera that Jim wanted for himself and realized that's not crazy at all, but instead, that's really clever. The world is full of stuff meant to be sold to other people although even the developers are not that much after it.

I remember scouring the waves for a sign that 1/3" sensor fixed lens development would not be prolonged, when I found DVX users, and Nattress plug ins. All roads led to RED.
I remember hounding the Panasonic rep about their ponderous fixation with tiny sensors and their apparent belief that they would be an answer to film.
All this after buddies and I had dragged a huge Steenbeck up to my one bedroom apartment to cut the black and white Doc I had shot on a Canon Scoopic and an Arri M.
Film hung everywhere, belts broke, bulbs blew, and many cutting beds later I was reduced to using a little hand cranked unit that Leni Riefenstahl would have laughed at.
My place looked like a scrap metal yard and I feared that the weight of the broken machines might take my old hardwood floor out and kill a neighbor or two on their trip to the basement. Ah, those were not the days. ( :

Just skipped through the history-thread and noticed that the domain already was bought back in 1999. How come the choice came down to Red, is there a specific reason? I know the sensor is red, but this most have been before the creation of the first sensor.

Red is the color of life, aggression, passion, war. It is 3 letters and 1/5 of the world's favorite color (including mine). Seemed like an easy choice to me. :-)

jim, what what has been more rewarding, the eye jackets or the epic?

When i was 12 all i could think about was owning a pair of Oakley eye jackets. At 26 all i can think about is owning an Epic. Stage 3 baby.

Me thinks you're actually in Stage 2. Stage 3, all you will be thinking of is Dragon. ;)

I have begun posting RED history in Recon/"Thoughts and Tips". I'll be updating it regularly for those that have any interest.

Hi Jim,

thanks, a lot of fun to watch and read!
I wonder if you could take on an excurse what all influenced and inspired you from using a Canon 1Ds to beginning designing and building a RED ONE.
I think of threads like "Alternative Imaging" on DVinfo.net and other inspiring resources, where quite some of the poeple involved played around before.
Things like the Drake camera for instance and the countless attempts to build home made cameras using industrial pieces like Lego blocks.
Especially - what was the moment you thought of "against all Canon's, Sony's and Panasonic's in the world - it can be done"?

Keep it coming :-)

Looking forward to it,

Cheers,
Axel
