  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

History...

I'm very curious about one thing though: it says RED Digital Cinema was established in 1999, but states that RED first came about in 2005. What happened during these years? Was there a single event in '99 that formed the idea - that got things rolling?

Yes... I was going to ask that very same question. What happened in 1999? <-- EDIT: already answered.

Thanks for th thread... I find the behind-the-scenes story very intriguing, and hope this is jus tthstart of much more to come.

I appreciate you sharing, Jim.

Your history thread is a fantastic trip down memory lane! It's a lot of fun to see the people and some of the processes behind RED. A wonderful and inspiring story. I'd certainly buy the coffee table book :).

April- Jim tries to quit smoking cigars and sleeps 3 hours a day under his desk. He doesn't succeed.

Do you mean you didn't succeed in quitting three hours of sleep or does that just apply to the cigars?

Why didn't you build a bedroom in the office instead of using a motor home?

Nice comment. Mark is always right! :)

I can't believe that 3 1/2 years just passed after I got my first RED ONE. It is never uninteresting around RED cameras!

Jim, I love the history thread.

I signed up at that 2006 NAB and I remember much of the history, it has been fun to reminisce.

All the best in the future!

This thread is incredibly inspirational. I love hearing about everyone else's stories.

At the time I decided I was going to buy into the RED program, I had received some terrible news from my University saying I owed them more money before I started my last year in the fall of 2006. So I took advantage of working close to 60 hours a week at my valet job to make enough money not only to support myself, but also to save up to put my $1000 deposit down on the camera. After a few months of hard work, I managed to place the deposit down in November of 2006...I still had to figure out how to find the rest of the money to purchase the R1 and enough accessories to support it.

Nearly 9 months after I put the deposit down, I had been back to school and was going into my last semester at TCU. 21 hours of classes, 20 hours of work on the weekends, and a girlfriend to please all at the same time I was launching my production company. I realized that if I could do all of that at the same time and realize my dream of having the R1 and starting a production company that was dedicated to digital, I can figure out how to do anything. The hard part was getting the first person to believe in me and invest in my company. After that it's been a breeze. I've overcome some tough business decisions, but I really think the hard part is behind me. If one person can believe in you, the rest will follow. That's my philosophy.

RED had not only inspired me as a filmmaker, but also as a better person who is eagerly awaiting to accomplish multiple things at once. Thank you Jim, for allowing me to bring out my inner beast, and the rest of the RED team for leading the way and showing us how it's done.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the day my R1 was shipped to my mailbox rental I picked up the 3 huge boxes and put them in my 2-door Subaru only to get in a minor car accident 30 seconds later. Talk about a downer! The young lady that hit my car was speeding on slippery wet Texas roads, hit the breaks too late (didn't even bother trying to go around my car), and smashed my front bumper. It would have ruined my day if I didn't have over $50,000 of equipment in the back and front seat. Luckily it was only minor damage and I made it to my office in one piece, along with the well boxed equipment. March 3rd, 2008, almost a year and a half after I put my deposit down. Looks like the EPIC-X is the same amount of time from deposit to shipping date!

Your own story is pretty inspirational Justin, thanks for sharing.

I had another idea for red.com in 1999. I'm certainly glad I didn't do that and saved it for our camera in 2005. :-)

Jim

Jim, will you ever reveal what the other idea was? As an inventor, you must have a zillion ideas passing through your brain. Do you have your sights set on anything beyond cameras?

Wow, what an awesome thread. This is fantastic idea for those of us who came a little later. For me, I remember this young man named Shawn Nelson. walk into my studio in early 2008 with this weird BRICK SHAPED COMPUTER with a P/L mount attached. I remember the PROXIES looking better than any digital camera I had seen. I also remember Shawn treating his #27 camera like it was his birthright :) SHAWN BLEEDS RED and I cant wait to see him get his EPIC-X and bring it down to the same studio for another project.

Actually, Jarred was bitten by a real black widow spider in his Scout. That was a separate incident. I think Tex called all his buddies up to help him finish the job.

Jim

So, Jarred wasn't "bitten by a black widow spider" ( :
