  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

History...

If RED made a "HISTORY" limited edition coffee table book featuring designs, photos, BTS,
interviews, various reduser photoshop images, etc I'm sure there will be a decent amount of people who
will buy it. This forum has over 40k members. Just a thought.

Hey Jim! This is so cool man! I'm really digging your History thread. If you post any shots of that very first 9am speech at NAB 2006 I'd be able to spot my Dad in the crowd moments before he got our reservation :-)

One thing I've always wondered...why did the early logos say "Est 1999"?

I bought www.red.com in 1999. The camera idea was 2005.

Why did you buy the domain in 1999? Did you have an idea for the name Red that didn't involve the camera?

Or was it for the camera all along?

I remember back in the early 2000's (2001 maybe) I was getting tech support over the phone for some internet problem. I recall the tech asking me to type in "Red.com." This was to test to see if my internet was running. I remember asking why "Red.com" and him telling me that it was the fastest and easiest thing to type in and back then it was just a quick logo as a screen splash, so it loaded fast. Remember that clearly now. Small world-- even over the internet.

I had another idea for red.com in 1999. I'm certainly glad I didn't do that and saved it for our camera in 2005. :-)

Looked at the history list again tonight. Full credit to both Directors and Cameramen.

I knew you wouldn't take my comment the wrong way. You rarely do. Congratulations on shipment of Epic X. I'm sure these kind of moments are very gratifying for you, both personally and professionally. The trip down memory lane is always fun, and also inspiring. I think you already know that you certainly inspire me to both think outside the box and embrace the personal challenge to do something better, and I thank you for that.

Who knows what the next 5 years can bring...

As a VERY happy Epic-M owner, I'm glad too! And thanks for the history post. Only 10 years (6 years really since things heated up) and SO much impact on the world of filmmaking and those of us making films. Cheers

I plan on updating the History thread with as much info as I can think of... it will take awhile. But it sure is fun thinking about how all this came together.

Jim

I'm glad to be a tinny part of it... congrats!

Jim! Share the idea that you did have for the 1999 Red website.

Im sure we would all love to hear it!

Also I could claim that what I showed here in March 2008 and it was a short video and photo shot with RED ONE at 2008 in P+S Technik.

It was a short video that showed Canon 40D with Leica Summicrom 35mm in back and SI 2K Mini in the front and I think

was actually one of crucial Jim's inspiration the concept of DSMC (digital stills and motion camera) that finished later in EPIC.

After that in June RED showed us the first rendering sketches about new smaller camera concept that was upcoming.

I can't show that image and video right now at the moment but will be able in a week when I'll be back in Vienna from my Ibiza holidays.

Also keep in mind that also Canon EOS 5D Mark II with a HD video capabilities was announced on September 17, 2008 just a couple of months after that.

What i wanted to say is that the internet today can inspire sometimes development of great products.

No offense Sanjin, but I was inspired simply by what I wanted. Having shot myself for over 37 years... I knew what I wanted and what was missing. I didn't need Canon to tell me, they were part of the problem.

And boom goes the dynamite.

... hehe ... sanjin .... !

... i guess, if shooting film compared to shooting stills wouldn´t have been so complex, bulky and expensive in the last millenium ...
many of us photographers would have used the approach for a very long time ... it is just a logical conclusion to get to better results, at least for minds not accepting the status quo as finite.

.... which is why RED gets all my love.
just sayin.
