  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

History...

I still remember Jarred and Barry Green posting an enthusiastic review and first test shoot on dvxuser about the HVX, I think it was a shoot with a convertible in a desert. It was what convinced me to buy the HVX back then. When reduser was created, I followed and really liked the philosophy of the company, the openness to talk and this unique culture of making the costumer feel part of (and be!) the whole development process. Unfortunately for many of us it is still not our time to get on the Red Wagon, at least as owners, but we are here supporting and following your development every step of the way. Keep it up, you're really a company like no other in this business. The film industry is a creative industry, a industry that requires cooperation and communication between artists from different areas as well as technicians. Films are the result of this. Red is probably the first Cinema Camera company to understand and embrace that aspect of communication and cooperation in this modern, globalized, internet communicating world. In other words, Red has the most solid foundation of any cinema camera company: its roots were built and developed with their costumers and supporters. Only a brilliant group of people (Red team) can have the confidence and capability to make use of this energy and mold it towards the results we have seen on the past 5 years. Congratulations!

Hey Justin, read the fourth comment below the article.

It's pretty funny.

Haha, wow, that guy is lucky he made that comment anonymously. Stuff like this really underscores how revolutionary RED is. It is easy to take it for granted now but before Jim (more than) delivered on his wild promises it all sounded pretty fantastical.

Mark my words now. Never going to happen. We'll see in a two years who is right and who isn't. It sounds an awful lot like you were won over by their investor presentation. Wanting to make an uber camera no matter how much money you have wont make it so. There are serious engineering problems to produce what they claim they will. If Canon, Panasonic, Sony, Arri, Viper, Grass Valley, and everyone else for that matter can't produce this camera you really think a guy that makes sunglasses for a living will ?

This is very typical vaporware. Sounds like you bought the marketing/investor presentation hook, line, and sinker.

Congrats on doing the impossible Jim and RED team.

I think I'm going to miss the posts of what's to come... What's ready to deliver is just not as sexy..

I have friends who were convinced that there was no way the industry would let Red happen. They believed that lawsuits, sabotage, or a buy-out would end it before the cameras got to market, and those of us who put money down would lose it.

That might have happened had RED been a public company. We are all extremely lucky Jim keeps it private.

Ha ha. I still have that footage on my hard drive. Along with the first slow motion footage of the martial arts dude from the HVX.

Man, after looking at the "Early Frankie", I can guess how the name came about, as in Frank N Stein

Old DVX Thread about visiting Oakley/Red...

Old DVX Thread about visiting Oakley/Red...

So I just reread the whole dvx thread from BITD, just because I was curious as to whether or not I posted in it, or just lurked.

I guess I just lurked. Lots of familiar names there, though.

Oh and did you guys hire Lil_Red from that thread who begged for a job to make you coffee?

I did notice that Jim's buzzsaw logo is a little different from the one in the 'Red History' sticky...

Interested? The democratization of motion pictures through inspiration, tenacious vision, cutting edge tech, one of a kind business model and big brass balls? Are we interested? Hell Yes!!! Red is making history, and after originating some of the best digital recording systems yet conceived at your complete disposal, perhaps its time to turn some of these fine cameras around on the very folks responsible for its creation*.

* I am vehemently NOT suggesting the creation of yet ANOTHER "Reality show", unless it's between Jim and Jack (and Jack's 12 apostles), but that will be a very quick but inordinately entertaining episode. lol

I'd love to hear more about the formative years of RED. As great as it's been to watch the progression from RED One to Epic, I find going from the original idea to Frankie that much more fascinating. It's a hell of an accomplishment, but you don't need to be told that. I'm very curious about one thing though: it says RED Digital Cinema was established in 1999, but states that RED first came about in 2005. What happened during these years? Was there a single event in '99 that formed the idea - that got things rolling?

OMG! this looks just like the GM Blower unit I had on my 460cc Big block...both put out incredible power for there size ;)

If I remember, that's the "Frankie" prototype. Yep, looks just like a blower or similar. And I never realized the top opened up on that thing like that.. Hehehe. Cool.
