Hi I am a british producer:thumbsup: shooting a pilot for a new TV show.We want to have a really glossy look and nice colours and tones.WHat would be the best option out of the Digital Arri D21 , Red One , 16mm or the Sony F23?

We really need the show to look like a clip from a film with DOF and nice tones??

Thanks:couch:

red and D21

red and D21

We just checked the D21 while we were shooting with 2Xreds using master primes. The D21 looked more noisy and less glossy than the red. maybe the DR of D21 is slightly more expanded than the red, thats what the reps of the D21 said, when recording on a HD, but overall I think, from what I saw, if you want that glossy look that you describe go with the red using Ultra or Master primes.

Hi Gianni,

I'm assuming you are shooting pilot for a TV show in the UK.

The list of cameras mentioned they are all good in my opinion. You should even consider s35mm and have the finished product in HD.

Also lenses are important, Ultra and Master Primes, are in my opinion too contrasty.....
If you are looking for tones, colours etc. I think Cooke S4 primes will do a good job.
Just my opinion.

so....RED ONE with Cooke lenses or s16/35 with cooke lenses then to HD.

just my 2 pence......

I'd go with Red One and spend the money on the glass, lighting, grips, motion, post,...I think those extra bits will give you more bang for the buck than the camera. Besides, the F23 and 16mm witll have larger DOF (or less sensitive) and will be softer/grainier than D21 or R1.

I have never been a zoom lover, always Cooke S4's and prior to that Primo's.
But I must say their seems to be a special relationship with my Optimo 24-290 and the Reds, it has a far more pleasing look than the Ultra primes I have been useing lately
Quite unbelievable actually

Here is what our look looks like with red and cheap still camera nikon and standard speed lenses....

One thing to possibly consider is that I think certain channels like the BBC are now supposedly refusing to air material originated on Super 16mm if it's for Hi-Def broadcast. So to cover your bases if you don't know for definite which channel you'll be potentially airing on, I'd narrow it down to the D21, the Red, or the F23. As others have said there's not a whole lot between them apart from price, so choosing the Red could allow you to put more money up on screen, or to rent superior lenses etc [$0.02]

Cheers everyone

Cheers everyone

Thanks for the advice I think im going to go for the RED or the D21.If anyone has seen the new Law&Order UK , you can see how great it looks and that was shot on D21.Any examples of TV shows shot on RED would be highly appreciated.

In the UK: "Red Riding: 1983", "Wallander", "Red Dwarf: Back To Earth", "BBC: Myths", "Bookaboo" etc...

In the US: ER, Southland, Leverage, Sanctuary, America, The Librarian 3, 26 Miles, In Love with Barbara, Icy Killers, The Amazing Mrs. Novak, The Tracey Ullman Show, Safe Harbor, Ms. Washington Goes to Smith etc...

I cannot believe that you are asking for an opinion wether to use RED or another camera on a REDUSER forum!

The pros here seem to be very honest in their opinions about the RED and other cameras they have experience with as well, both pro and con. It is a great forum.

Love the looks Obin! Is your film going to be released anytime soon?
