Hi everyone,

I recently had the chance to shoot a music video on 2K, it has been my first experience on red, The shooting went fine, these are the specs; 2K 16:9, 320 ASA, 5.6f , Sthutter 1/120 using redcode 36, except for the high speed shoots on wich we used redcode 28. We shooted on blue chroma key , with ( sometimes ) highly contrasted foreground (characters). There was no noise on the monitor or the on-board-LCD, but when we started to export the footage we found a lot of noise , wich seems to be a compression issue. The result quality is extremely poor ( not suiting our expectations at all). We used the 15 (2.1.8 BETA) firmware.

You can download a sample at : www.impulsfilms.com/redfile/I002_C001_080323_002.R3D

A million thanks in advance!!!

Tungsten, and by the way the firmware was 15 (2.1.7) Beta.

the red sensor is natively a daylight sensor....you will get the cleanest images for keying using daylight lights....and a greenscreen.

Well, Red sensor might work better in daylight , but does that mean that you inmediately get a lot of noise in blacks and midlights when using tungsten lights? i does not make any sense to me, i know greenscreen it's much better , but due to production needs we had to use blue. Still , if we had used HDCAM we wouldn't have had such a terrible noise...

Well its unfortunately the worst case scenario: 2k resolution, Tungsten, Bluescreen.
You'd get much much better results with: 4k resolution, Daylight, Greenscreen.

... ouch

As Anders said above, you picked the worst combination of factors possible.

And yes, shooting tungsten means the camera is not using the S/N ratio of the camera to the fullest, boosting the noise floor.

You can get keys just as clean as HDCAM, even cleaner, if you don't stack the cards against the camera by doing everything as you did.

Can you post some shots of how you're "developing" the raw image.

Graeme

Shooting 4k, daylight, greenscreen generates oversampled to 1080p one of the richest footage I ever pulled a key from. Not to compare with HDCAM. Close or equal to 35mm 444 scans.

If you have bad footage there is no magic trick but a lot of experience and patience needed. Sorry to hears this.

Hans

Ok , I'm obviusly agree with that, Anders, but in my opinion it does not make sense at all that the same shooting would have come out MUCH better if shot on HDCAM or even XDCAM, It would have much less noise , or no noise at all.
Still I can't believe the resulting quality of all the specs shown above is what it is. It has to be related with firmware or post-production (red cine ) issues...

Ramis, I'm interested to see how you did the RAW processing of the image too.

The reason I say that is because I downloaded the file and did a quick processing myself and my images are fine.....of course there will be some noise in there, but I keyed it out well and when I exported it, it looks great.

Are your quicktime settings correct? Go to preferences and then click on Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility. This may be the main reason you are seeing noise.

Noise is the only issue I don't understand about the Red. I have very little experience with film, but I have worked with a lot of video systems. I see noise in several Red video's (both quicktime and R3D files) that I am worried about. On reduser I tried to find everything I could about the issue.
Having experimented with several R3D files in Redcine and FCP I get reasonable quality (regarding noise only now) but I must say that the images of my JVC GY-HD 201 look smoother as it comes to noise on my 720p monitor.
I understand Ramis his worries about the picture and I don't know what to think about Jay's remark that the image looks ok. Of course it's a Jpeg, but there still sems a lot of noise to me.

I agree johan, I've only been shooting with the RED for a few weeks, and am experimenting with all the settings, but it seems that there is indeed alot of noise in the shadow areas, even in daylight situations. Crushing the blacks helps, but the area above that is where I always see noise dancing around, no matter what the situation.
