Hi guys,

I've seen that the new HDR Reference Monitor TVlogic LUM-310R is going to be shown at NAB (around 15-20K $ display I think)

I would love to know if some of you (not under NDA of course) have some input about other upcoming HDR reference displays at NAB. FSI maybe ? BMD ?

Thank you.

This is just speculation but Flanders have been hinting at a 4K display for a little while. Maybe they will also make the leap to HDR. My guess though, they will only do it if they can achieve a certain level of price/performance.

Lots of people are throwing around the TLA known as HDR. As of today, the Sony BVM X300 is still the only HDR grading monitor you can purchase that people trust. It will be interesting to see what NAB brings. Basically the current recipe is BVM X300 for HDR grading and an LG OLED for a sanity check on a larger display.

There is also the unicorn that goes by the name Pulsar. :)

Many companies seem to have a really difficult time properly implementing ST2084. A professional HDR grading monitor should not tone map. It should hard clip at its peak output. It is fine to offer a user mode to "simulate" a brighter output by applying a tone mapping curve, but you must be able to turn this off.

Thank you for your responses, guys.

I can't wait to see what NAB 2017 will offer :).

I think even a small sized hdr REFERENCE monitor would be awesome if affordable. As Stacey said, big B7 LG for sanity. A sub-5K$ 17" reference hdr 2K nits peak luminance FALD LCD grading monitor would be ASTONISHING, even 2K resolution only.

Nobody tried to grade on a sony zd9 or even a Atomos ninja inferno ? ;)

Any estimated pricing on the Eizo...

Cheers - #19

Eizo is not talking about the display until NAB and it looks like they haven't gotten it past the "we built it" stage due to the bleeding edge hardware. I would expect them to charge over 5K since their previous 4K monitors are going for that.

Eizo only has the display at prototype stages of development and won't be shipping it until sometime next year, due to refinement and component sourcing, so there will be no pricing information until close to the release date.

After pressing them for some kind of an answer on the NAB show floor today I was told, "Between $6,000 and $30,000." So the answer is, they're not saying.
Let's compromise at $18,000. That is still cheaper than Sony's largest pro HDR display (at the moment).

Nice try Cameron. Thank you.

The FSI at under 8K$ would be amazing. 1m:1 contrast & 2000 nits peak...

I don't understand why on earth there is no more competition in the pro grading displays, especially 4k-hdr stuff. There is an extremely agressive competition between pro camera manufacturers, but barely nothing on the hardware post-production stuff. FSI is pretty affordable but they are almost alone on the professional area and they still not entered in the dci p3 / 4k / hdr era yet (let's see the xm31k)

Someone should ask BMD to make a Blackmagic Design HDR Grading Monitor.

Marc,

What are your thoughts about the upcoming 2k$ dell hdr monitor (1,000 nits brightness, and I believe 384 FALD zones, if it the same panel than the nvidia/asus/acer) ?

What are your thoughts about grading HDR on a zd9 and a b7, with lut box and proper calibration tools ?

I know that you recommend to person who can't afford a Sony X300 and wants grade in hdr, do a rec709 grading first, and rent a Sony X300 or a Dolby Pulsar for the hdr grade, but still, I would like to know your opinion about these ones.

Thanks :)

PS : The FSI display seems VERY exciting.

X300 cost $2500 for two days to rent and Pulsar is not even available for rent, only as a lease and even if it was available, it's a $250k monitor, so the daily rate would be astronomical. So, no, if you can't afford to buy X300, then the professional monitor is not in the cards for you...
