  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HDR on Canons by Magic Lantern hack

Very interesting. And cool. Looks nice.

EDIT: I suppose I should have added "...for what it is." I have avoided the ML hack up to now but with Scarlet ordered, I might just cut loose and experiment with the 60D.

Hmm - doesn't look that good to me.

Also, it doesn't look like its shooting at 48fps and blending, it's blending from a 12fps mode.

I think I'll do some proof of concept doing 12fps 5k with scarlet and interpolating to 24fps.

Not so fascinating. Interpolating every second frame is making motion look... not so good. If your frame rate is not very high or your in camera motion is very low... So it's quite limited and needs post processing.

I can see that in another life, I'd have been superhappy about this... :)

(Looking at Epic-X, shaking his head... ISO + interpolating =.... stillscamera, right?)

It's no HDRx, of course, but that is fairly innovative. I never would have thought it would be possible out of a measly 550D - not even at 12 fps. I have used InterFrame to get 24fps out of 12fps DSLR (RAW) burst in the past and it is surprisingly effective given the right subject, and in this case you do have at least one exposure for every frame. Anyway, can't imagine this thread will be open for long.

Fun!

I'm more interested in the fact that they also seemed to manage to hack the a Canon 600D to shoot at 38fps!

If they can hack that upcoming 4K DSLR to 48fps, they might have something :)

Very interesting. Far too stutter-ish though. But in a very very minimal movement shot on a DSLR, it may be useful....but at 720p I am guessing, not to mention...it doesn't really resolve to true 720 at that resolution. SD quality at best

Well, well, well.

Pigs *can* fly.

FSSVO 'fly'.

Sorry... *ducks*

shoot this at 48 or 60 fps... add some twixtor/kronos magical interpolation and motion blur, and you might get some pretty cool stuff for what it is. magic lantern is legit, you need it on your camera even if you just shoot stills.

Guys,

if you remember well during our long HDRx discussion here at the RED user that I was first to suggest extraction

of two different ISO images and blend them to get a sort of HDR effect.

Those trends were unfortunetaly closed or even deleted from the forum.

Here you can download a short test movie about my concept of HDR shot on RED ONE MX >>>

Also I found that Panavision just released 2/3" sensor with almost similar basic concept.

Flexible High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging is achieved by utilizing two data words per row, for dual gain or dual integration.
The dual gain or dual integration data can be kept separate on the dual words for proper post processing for enhanced image rendering.

sanjin, the only thing about the pseudo hdr method is that the information is all there in the raw data, you don't have to run it through two passes. you should be able to manipulate the curves in such a way as to have all the data, however it could be easier to get a certain look by splitting it out the way you have.

níííííce :)

Couldn't you do the same with the original mov file by changing the ISO value in the meta data?
If so then you could do it with EOS 5D footage too. And then you could blend both frames by opacity in post, rather than interpolation, so the footage would be smoother.

Not that you'd want to. HDRx does it better.

AGUHhHHHHHHH.

Sanjin for the 100,000th time. Blending two ISOs IS POINTLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S NOT GAINING ANY DYNAMIC RANGE!

*snicker*

I shouldn't be laughing but I think I was number one. Good to see someone still trying though, Gavin.

Too bad this hack doesn't work for the 7D or the 5D. Do any of you professors know why that is? What's different about the cameras, for it to work on these specific models?
