  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Another advantage of having so much dynamic range.. with SMPTE-2084 HDR capable monitors you can now view full live HDR while you shoot.

never really shot HDR... does false color's readings adapt to when you're shooting HDR?
 
The HDR-2084 support is not tied in or dependent upon HDRx. Doing proper HDRx blending requires REDCine-X, so when we put HDR-2084 into software, we'll be able to see how it works in combination with HDRx.

I want to try dual Weapon's in a 3D rig (e.g. ET Atom) to capture an obscene amount of DR for some demo clips. Dolby did this with a pair of Alexa's on some of their demo content.
 
What I've been doing for stills with magnificent DR (to fully explore the SMPTE2084 curve) is to use the frame averaging option. That gives me data upon R3D decode that can be very low noise even when exposed to get highlights right at 10,000nits.

Is the present workflow, to just check the HDR in RedCine pro on the DIT station

You may need HDMI 2.0a for HDR support. The 'A' revision adds the HDR metadata info, albeit static. You need to setup the HDMI InfoFrames correctly to put a display into HDR mode.

Samsung put the input processing for the TV in a separate box. Which supposedly can be swapped out for one that supports HDMI 2.0a.

Also, there's another way to get HDR content onto the TV: through an app that talks directly to the TV and doesn't need HDMI at all. You can actually buy a hard drive with films on it and they will play in HDR on it.

So it might just be possible for some enterprising person from just writing an app that could play HDR content properly - heck, maybe even wirelessly.

But yeah, HDMI 2.0a box upgrade should be the simplest!
