  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HDMI to HDTV problems

HDMI incompatibilities

HDMI incompatibilities

If that's the case then what's the problem with my Dell 2709W not working? I have a hard time understanding why every other audio/video hardware company makes it work when it's so hard to get the RED to work. Is the HDMI controller in the RED just not up-to-par?

With respect, how about we don't jump to conclusions?

We don't know that is what it is (which is why the test results will be interesting) and it wouldn't explain your Dell monitor anyway...

If anyone has a positive contribution to make to this then please provide that input.

HDMI on Red stop working

HDMI on Red stop working

Everything works on Samsung T240 24" with HDMI 3meter cable.
But when I tried brand new 15 meter cable 1.3 HDMI it didn't give any picture.
Now HDMI on camera is not responding even with the old 3 meter cable.
Was on build 16, I reset the camera and after update on build 17, same results - HDMI out from camera not working.
:help:
If anyone know how to awake the sleeping HDMI?

I have a section in the Menu of my Panasonic Plasma that says control with HDMI. You can turn this feature on and off. Maybe this is the problem?

Steve...have your tried turning the feature off and plugging in the camera?

I have a Panasonic 42inch plasma, where on in menu is this HDMI control shutoff?

On my Panasonic in the Menu, undersetup, and then scroll down until you see other adjustments you will see ctrl with HDMI. This is my home TV so I have not tried it with the RED. I did try the new Ikan V8000HDMI and that did not work but did not freeze the camera. Maybe I didn't have the camera set right. What settings should the camera be on for HDMI output.

On my TV (Panasonic TH42PZ800) I think that setting is called "Viera link"
Anyway, I turned it off and tried again with no luck. I started the camera with the HDMI plugged in but the TV off and there was no freeze up. But as soon as I turned on the TV everything on the camera froze.

I am also wondering if there is a camera setting that needs to be enabled or disabled although I can't find anything in the manual or on the camera menus.

Too bad because the Panasonic Plasmas are really the best (excluding Pioneer) consumer TV's and lots of people have them.

HDMI and HD-SDI are both active at all times. So its really a question of which frame size you want to send out.

There are two choices 1280 x 720 and 1280 x 848. The latter is called Menus (DVI) Use Video (720p) to feed into an HDTV.

Also check the setting for HD-SDI frequency - is that 59.94 or 50.00. Set that as appropriate for your country.

I've tried HDMI on a variety of devices. My Samsung 46" 1080p TV hangs the camera as does my Sony CRT Projector (via 1080p HDMI module). I have a cheap 1920x1280 24" monitor with a 25-foot HDMI->DVI cable, which works fine.

I have ran HDMI out from the camera to a friends older 36" DLP TV (720p I think) and it worked fine.

Stuart, thanks for at least participating in this thread and adding your comments and suggestions. It would be wonderful if we could have this fixed for a majority of monitors in the near future. Certainly a "RED" list of compatible monitors would go a long way in the mean time.

I just tested this on my Panasonic PT-AE2000 1080p projector via HDMI and it froze my cam. Via HDMI to DVI on my Dell 2405 monitor I had no problem...
I used a 12 foot high-quality HDMI cable on the projector...

i have a panasonic projector and i can get 1/2 width image on screen with Red set to 50hz ... the image will start in the middle of the screen so i only see the left 1/2 of image ( as in -left edge of frame starts middle of screen and image goes to right side of screen ) ...
if i switch to HDMI preview then i still get 1/2 the image and i get the camera info ( fps, shot # ) .. i used 35ft & 100 ft cable ... not sure why i get the image starting in middle of screen ???

i have a gateway 22" monitor that i run a 100ft HDMI cable with a HDMI to DVI adaptor and i get a nice 1280x720 image ( gateway has it's own scaling engine) ....

I just tested the Dreamcolor display and it froze my RED too :(
Does anyone have an idea why this is happening? The only difference I see between those that work and those that don't (in my case) is that the Dell doesn't have HDCP compliance...

It sounds like a serious handshake incompatibility issue. That or some buggy programming relating to the HDMI circuitry in the camera.

Can a consumer 42" 1080p LCD monitor from say, Walmart, be used as a field monitor for the R1 to check focus and composition? ... using HDMI that is.

Assuming it's the actual HDMI hardware in the camera and not some oddball software bug, it's not something RED has many (if any) possible solutions for fixing it beyond full hardware replacement with a different HDMI chipset unless the supplier has the ability to fix it with some kind of firmware overhaul which happens quite a lot. HDMI has always been buggy from Day 1 and it doesn't help that many "new" electronics are being put on the shelves with older or cheaper non-compliant implementations of HDMI from the Asian electronics industry. I have no idea what make and version the RED One has and they probably wouldn't want to say anyway but I am sure they will replace it if it causes widespread problems.

Just to add balance to the conversation, HDMI has been no problem for me. I have a 30 foot HDMI cable plugged into an LG LBD2DE 1080LCD and works perfectly in both 720 and 1080.

I can insert and remove the cable while the camera and monitor are on, never freezes or even skips a beat.

How many inches is this LG LCD and where did you get it from. I'm scouring the internet and can't locate this model. Is the model number correct?

Thanks.

One question for those who are doing fine with HDMI: can you get playback signal from your camera? see the shot again and again, or do you just monitor while you are recording?

Thanks, it will help me to know what to look for

HP w2408H same symptoms

HP w2408H same symptoms

I just got the HP w2408h 24 LCD monitor. It seems to cover the 720p stuff good. The monitor has () Fill to Screen () Fill to Aspect () One to One. So I can view full output with[out] any stretching.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1196470439175

But when I try to 1080p play black the monitor gives me the following error.

"Input signal out of range. Change settings to 1920 x 1200 - 60 HZ"

identical problem the monitor just doesn't like something about the 1920 60p.
other than that, this monitor is a real pleasure to use, we have two, one is being used by our Vegas Editor (she uses SONY VEGAS, and works in our vegas location) , very rich colors, native 1920, and getting cheap. I recommend it as a "first" monitor.

SONY 40 inch KDL 40V4150 This was found in stock here in NYC for about $1200. A bigger monitor, but still easy to move around, the color depth and brightness are there. Does a great job of displaying 720P except for the control panel offers size and positioning controls, but in HDMI these are locked out.

a real drag because in camera viewing mode, the overscan of the monitor cuts off the grayscale and histogram. In playback, the 1920 X 1080p image displays beautifully, but is shifted approximately 1/3 screen width to the right. I theorize that this timing error may be related to 24 frame rate, but unfortunately am unable to record in 30FPS due to slow media, so unable to experiment.

Apparently, when you hook it to a computer, it allows you to use these controls, so its not about the lack of a scaler in the viewing engine, just a firmware oversight. The user manual hints that the scaler will work in HDMI if it recognizes a computer.

The addition of positioning ability for HDMI out would let RED solve what is actually the manufacturer's problem.

We are still in testing, so used beta 18 build, but identical problems were present in build 16 (which arrived inside our red.)

I like the idea of an SDI to HDMI converter. SDI just makes so much sense to old timers with miles of coax plant, but its not common on consumer-priced displays. Thanks for that idea!

Agreed. I don't think that is the correct LG model number. Can you confirm please?
