  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HDcam or Bluray for projection?

Thanx Jeremy,

Fair point I guess with tape being a tad safer than discs in that regard...
Still gotta say I can't wait for them to accept DCI files or whatever digital file standard we will have in the future.
Comparing the discrete 5.1 with the Dolby surround LtRt mix is a bit depressing...;-)

Festivals hate discs cuz they can skip whereas a pro deck should have clean heads with time code and less likely to skip.

We had a choice of HDcam or DigiBeta for our screening Friday and the distrib elected for Dbeta...the audience didn't care -they were entertained and liked it...would I have preferred HDcam? Of course, but nobody else seemed to mind the poor sound mix and crappy color timing (neither of which were my fault).

It's always frustrating as a filmmaker when you want your movie to look and sound the best, but where you're projecting it or where you are showing it is not setup for what you want or just has poor quality standards. My short film went to 15 festivals, but very few of them accepted HDCam tapes, so it was mostly just DVD everywhere. Sometimes, it looked good because they had decent players, a few other times it looked horrible. One time the aspect ratio was off for everyone's films, I have no idea what they did but they somehow managed to squish us all into a 4:3 square or something instead of widescreen. It makes me angry because we spend SO much time making sure everything looks and sounds great, but none of that matters if they have lousy technology. Then audiences probably don't know any better, it's an indie film festival, they just assume that's what your work looks like and you're a poor indie filmmaker who just doesn't know any better.
