"HD Video for Amateurs Using Canon DSLRs">>>

Event organized by B&H Foto & Electronics Corp., NYC at Tuesday, October 13, 2009 | 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

7D talks to itself, it's an amateur DSLR camera.

The point, Sanjin, is: what Francis F. Coppola said in Hearts of Darkness becomes true.

Cinema now is in the same league as any other traditional art such as poetry, painting, etc.

Cheers,
E. :-)

One of the most annoying "RED' things are those provincial fanboy zealots like 'Sanjin' - who think a RED camera is the quintessential 'professional' camera - please get out of your freaking village for a change - and, who think everybody who's not using a 'RED' camera is something like a brain dead loser.

All the while forgetting the the REDs claim to fame is that it makes 'pretty pictures' (let's forget the funny colors for a second) and that it's dirt cheap.

Wow!

Well so far there is nothing else on the market near the price of a RED 1 that shoots as high a quality motion image. Certainly nothing under $10k comes close. Of course the end result is still very dependent on the skill and vision of the shooter.

Well, that's what I'm saying. It's a great camera for the price - it has it's issues, still does a great job in its range.

It's just so friggin' annoying reading them messages of those who think they have to protect their 'investment' by constantly spitting out that fanboy nonsense.

...those provincial fanboy zealots like 'Sanjin'...

will sanjin mention his leica noctilux in his reply to this post? :blush5:

vienna isn't that provincial..it was rated as the number one city in the EU this year again.

Picking on Sanjin again? :hand:

As hilarious as all his proclamations are about how Canon DSLRs are for "amateurs" and "advanced tourists," etc, he does actually have a point. These cameras are basically "missing links" in the evolution of HD cameras. They are "fill ins" until the real technology comes to fruition. I guarantee you that once Canon puts out a RAW or more serious cinema camera, no one is going to be recording anything serious on these H264 cameras. I have all but stopped using the video function on my 5D2, because the quality is simply not there.

Tom, there's this horses for courses. That's all fine and understood as long you you also understand that for some the quality's not there either shooting with a RED. Nobody in his right mind is going to shoot a high production value film with a DSLR, or with a RED. And sure, there's exceptions, there's some done with a RED and there'll be some done with an iPhone. So what, that's not really the the point, isn't it. Tom, do you think that a RED is, like, not a missing link? Is that your point?

The whole point of this thread was to mock or agitate anyway.

Well Red One is a bit of a missing link, yes. That's why I don't own one. I have been saying for years that Red's second offering will be the camera(s) that truly changes the game. But at least Red One can produce a high-quality 1080p finish in the right hands, and used properly. You say that no one in his right mind will use Red One on serious projects, but Terrence Malick and Emmanuel Lubezki disagree. They used Red One for various shots in Malick's upcoming "Tree of Life." You cannot get more serious than those guys.

I'm not saying that the 5D2 and 7D don't have their place. I used the 5D2's video capabilities to shoot my "Learning to Fly" reel this spring, but I had a lot of shots ruined by moire pattern bullshit, and generally speaking, the quality just doesn't meet any kind of professional standards at 1080p. For smaller projects, yes, I'm sure these H264 DSLRs will produce some amazing works. We have already seen that. I'm just saying that Sanjin does actually have a point when he describes these cameras as less than "professional"-grade tools.

Dude Karl... are you serious?
are you not aware of how many large productions are shooting RED?
it isnt the minority.

its shooting good quality footage at more than half the price of a f35 rental...

"nobody in his right mind is going to shoot a high production value film with a red"

okaaayyyyyy

All in life is relative. Both options can meet you on the big screen.

Saman Keshavarz is a kind of amateur we love !

It's a DSLR. That it happens to do video is by the way. Stop acting like Canon tried to make a video camera and cocked it up. It's a DSLR ok?
Oh yes the fact that a 'tog is an amateur just means they do it for the love of the subject, not for money, and the fact that they (We) are amateur does not make us any less aware of quality nor do we strive any less to achieve it.
It just means we (Usually) have less cash available and have to do what we can with what we've got.
I still hope to be in the market for a 2/3" Scarlet, but if my funds don't allow that. then I'll be looking for the most cost-effective alternative
/end rant.

I agree! I understand when people have a problem with Canon because:

a) they sell minor improvments on a yearly basis that you will have to pay for fully.

b) They slow down the development for economical reasons. ("no need to give them everything they want at once even if we could." Yes, that is an assumption, but although I think Jim is a visionary, I don't think he was the only one capable of producing a system with REDONE specs. He was just the only one who wanted to at the time and tried etc.)

c) they didn't manage to produce a HD-semi-professional with a chip bigger than 1/3" for quite some time now.

Other than that they make good DSLR and good glass. Stop comparing DSLRs to Scarlet and/or Epic.

Why isn't Sanjin picking on Ipod Nano or webcams by the way?

The funniest thing is comparing a camera that somebody doesn't think is good enough versus a camera they dub as superior, and it doesn't even exist.

Yeah, the digital revolution makes me feel like a happy little fat girl from the Balkans.
