  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HD Video for Amateurs Using Canon DSLRs

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I had Epic promo model full "fitted" body (brain, battery, etc) in may hands at IBC, its lighter than RED body about 30-40% but had RED prime front "heavy" lens.

So when you put all other stuff like a REDDrive, FF, matte box, etc,...you can use your old EVF and then is pretty close weight as RED1 fully fitted.

AlsoI couldn't jump again in this tread just because at lat two days had a lot of RED vine and RED hot chilly pepper in food and now I'm resting a bit and calibrating HP Dreamcolor monitor that is plugged in REDRocket card.

Gorgeous.

My R1 handheld rig waiting for Sound Design Mix Pre (coming next week) to have it on the top of ET cheese plate and then I would be ready to go with it.

Have a look:

Handleld rig of your dreams:RED ONE with ET Mantis + EasyRig 3, set of lightweight Leica lenses (19,24,28,35,50,60,75,90mm),
Cinevate FF rings, Sound Design MixPre lightweight audio mixer (coming soon), Rode NTG-3, Arri MMF-1 (coming soon).

At the end Canon 7D is on my list to buy just because is going to update my old Canon 40D DSLR anyway.

Don't underestimate his levels of dedication to Red! :smilielol5:

You're right Tom.

Sanjin:

The easyrig is cool but can you "facemount" it.

Just kidding, man - we love your passion.

Michael,

with Mantis balancing RED on your shoulder and EasyRig "freeing" you from RED rig weight and the cam and lens is just next to your face on the right size.

:attention9ha:

So you can carry your RED1 and walk using this rig combo for hours and R1 is always just next to your face!!!

Short and dirty mix of my diverse handheld tests with R1 #694:

Dude Karl... are you serious?
are you not aware of how many large productions are shooting RED?
it isnt the minority.

What? RED despite amazing penetration, especially for a small start up with a camera that was their first effort, is still a small player in the big budget productions.

But that is changing :)

Still think it a shame that Red didn't take their design cues from aaton. The very best for hand held.

Oh my god, I LOVE shooting with Aatons. Like a cat on your shoulder (altough I never quite got that metaphor). and those wooden hand grips are to die for.

Wonder if you could rig an aaton hand grip to work with the new Epics and Scarlets.

When I shoot hand held with aaton's, when you are turning over, it sounds to the ear closest to the camera like a cat purring.

From the photos of the current design of the epic, it looks like it is still quite a front heavy camera. Doubt that the small aaton wooden hand grip would be far enough forward to counter balance.

I finally saw District 9 last night in a digital theater, it was pretty sweet. But... I saw aliasing on one shot. Near the beginning, a guy takes a shotgun of a rack and the mesh holding some shotgun shells shows some moire briefly. Red is now officially for amateurs. If you use a Red one, you're pretty much a glorified tourist idiot using a slightly-higher-than HD home-movie camera. Movies aren't real unless they're shot on real film. I left the theater thinking how awesome the movie was, but then I remembered the one shot where I saw moire for 3/4ths of a second... completely ruined it.

I actually saw some moire when i was watching the "The Dark Knight" DVD last night. So, even IMAX cameras are amateur.

EDIT: :sarcasm: (adding that just in case)

Also... I'm sure it was the DVD compression. It was one the aerial cityscape shots (I think of Hong Kong, but not 100% sure). Pretty sure it was 35mm and not IMAX. Thought was odd tho to even see it on DVD tho.

Some of the D9 footage was shot on video cams.

You do know they also used EX-3... this shot could have been from that camera

I'm assuming you are being facetious, but it does point to the fact that we shooters may not be great judges of what really makes a difference.

I can remember when I used to watch movies without thinking about shallow DOF, dynamic range, "jello", moire, shutter angles, bokeh, anamorphic bokeh and smear, noise, etc. etc. etc.

As a long time video shooter I used to go to the movies and not think about the mechanics. After buying my REDONE and reading REDUSER for two years - I'm pretty much ruined for just sitting back and taking in a movie.
