  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HD-SDI output

1080 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 recorded to a deck is crucial for a studio configuration and the reason I reserved 3 cameras. I would love to hear from Red if/when that is expected to be enabled.

If it's no longer in the plans, I hope Red will clearly let us know. If it is still in the plans, I hope they will give us a ballpark of when.

we all want/need this, and are asked to chill.

guess that means we're fine for now.

I'm all for being patient while waiting for features to be enabled, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect someone from Red to answer the simple questions posed on this thread -- is 1080 4:4:4 and/or 4:2:2 recording capability to an external deck still in the plans, and if so, when? How long would that take to answer -- 30 seconds?

What worries me is that Red didn't answer this question(s) in your thread of a few days ago.

Hi Tim,

I can tell you that I asked more than one person at the Red booth last April about those outputs and was assured that recording to a separate deck would be possible. In fact, your situation specifically came up. I'm even pretty sure that Bart Harrison and I discussed this at NAB in 2006 which is why we suggested Red as an option for you.

I think the Red team is trying to implement those features it considers to be the most important as quickly as possible and at the same time to catch up on some of the delays. I'd like to think that the lack of direct response is because they're pretty busy. Considering all they've accomplished, losing the on screen data from these ports should be a fairly simple thing.

By the way, my camera should be ready by the end of next month and I know Bart, Kent and Guy would love for me to bring it up to Vero for a look. I'll let you know when that happens.

Hi Tim

That sort of had me alarmed at first, but then I thought:
WTF

If I was to make this cam and had to send out cams without all specs enabled, what would I do first?

And I thought:

1. Basic monitoring - Done
2. Some basic way to view the footage - Done
3. Redcine
4. Magic Focus
5. Waveforms/False colors
5b Red-drive
6. EVF
7. Variable Frame Rates (as that has been such a big issue)
8. Audio
9. HDSDI 1080 4:2:2 monitoring and output
10. Unfinnished goodies

Sorta.

I may be way off on the order of things, but the:
"Make it work 1st" approach is actually quite appreciated.

That doesn't mean I don't want dual HD-SDI 4:4:4 output, though...
I even think David Newmans idea of using the SDI ports as a datatransfor for uncompressed RAW data is quite smart...
That would sart of make the RAEW port unneccesary and give us 4k dual recording options for security.

Me like!

But I don't worry, and just dream on -;)

Cheers!

Hello Champe and Gunleik. I know that recording to a deck was the plan, and I hope still is. However, as Red has made clear, features and specs are subject to change. It seems strange that Red hasn't commented on this particular feature in quite some time, despite the questions being asked in this and previous threads.

I know they're busy, but you'd think someone in the know at Red could type out: "Yes it's still in the plans -- 4:2:2 to an HDCAM deck should be up in 60 - 90 days" (or whatever the answer is).

Red has been very responsive to questions posed on this forum, and it seems to me they're breaking their pattern on this one.

Well, Jim has just announced "We now expect all features to be enabled by November 30th". All we need to know is exactly what those features are. I suspect that audio and 4:2:2 out of the SDI were fairly high on the to do list.

Yes they have been very responsive, but remember how small and busy a team they are!

Say there are conservatively 50 questions daily and it takes 5 mins to think about and write an answer (excluding time to find the relevant RED team member able to give a definitive answer, the sheer time it takes to read all the threads, let alone note all the new questions or old questions asked again by new posters). That's 250mins or over 4 hours of RED team time just trying to answer everyone's personal "quick" question! And I'm probably being very optimistic about that 5 minutes - it's taken longer than that for me to make this post - I always check and often rewrite before clicking submit to either make a post clearer, more accurate, less defamatory, inadvertently insulting etc!

Or put another way, that's 4 daily person hours not spent working on finishing the camera...

Wierdly we find the opposite. CineForm is an even smaller company than Red, yet almost all our staff spend some time replying on forums, as that helps prevent one-to-one email inquires, or worse phone calls, which all take up much more time. A single reply can save hundreds of the same question take much more time consuming channels. If also greatly helps in customer satisfaction. True it is a little easier for CineForm being a software company, the answers can be easier to get at with all staff are in the one location, yet I believe the principle still applies. Of there are always questions that can have a ackward answers that you don't want to reply, for CineForm that is typical regarding Avid support (tricky), delaying replies. I can't see how this thread should be an ackward one for Red, except for my 4K over dual-link idea hurting the RAW port market, the rest seem to be features discussed a year ago.
