  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HD-SDI output

Course its possible but why would you want to?

Not much use as 'back-up' to 4k because its only 1080p.

Sounds too good to be true

Wow David. That is the kind of thinking outside the box that makes this pursuit so much fun. I am thinking a Wafian on a cart would be the cost effective option, though still lacking the physical reel of tape the bonders seem to be in love with.

If this is essentially a data stream could it just be recorded on commodity RAID tech on a cart? A 4 drive rig should be able to keep up until the last 10% of the platter which you should avoid anyway. This would be insanely cheap per gig.

I still wonder if we could feed off the LEMO connector designed for the RedDrive with a custom cable that would feed standard eSATA infrastructure?

Hey Blair,
What happen to your SD Red event?

The 4K 24p 10-bit RGGB RAW data over dual link is still 253-303MBytes/s depending on how the data is packed. So a 4 drive RAID is not likely to be fast enough, yet compressing sightly to SR or a Wafian HR-2 would work.

As for the internal RED artitecture for the eSATA etc, I know nothing. All I know is the dual-link HDSDI, can be used in this way, opening 4K Red recording compatibility with existing gear.

I just wrote up a solution to this. Technically it is possible to format the RAW output across dual-link HDSDI such that you can store 4K RAW to an Sony HDCAM SRW1 deck. This would allow for 4K back-ups which do have value for shooting insurance on budgeted film projects.

Absolutely David, what your suggesting has a ton of value for back-up. This would indeed be a fantastic option for RED to look into.

Great idea David!
It certainly has potential for a safe and smooth workflow standard.

Sorry it´s not! Please read what the red teams wrote:

Hello Jonas,

At this point a single HD-SDI output is enabled providing 720P. The dual
HD-SDI should be enabled very soon. It is not feasible to record this output
because you will also be recording all other monitoring info in frame
(camera temp, battery and media storage, ect.). These outputs are designed
for monitoring purposes.

Clearly such monitoring could be turned off to enable the enhanced user features. I see very little point myself is using dual link for monitoring the battery level--that is a highend output port. Dual link at 2048x1080 RGBA, has all the bandwidth needed for RAW 4096x2160 up to 30p, not doing so would seem a lost opportunity.

Yeah, just call RED and it's confirm that HD-SDI at the moment is not recommended recording to any deck. It's for monitoring purpose only with all parameters visible. But i do hope that this would change. Give a clean output from HD-SDI 4:4:4 and have an option to do tape recording. We can always use HDMI for monitoring anyway.

? Of course Dual is 444 and single is 422. What do you mean by size limit ?

He is probably referring to the 720p limit on single link SDI that everyone keeps mentioning.

Anyone know if there is an RGB standard for 720p over SDI? Single link should have the required bandwidth at 24fps.

It's like other features:

As of now: 720p, and no SDI when LCD attached, but down the road:
dual SDI 1080 4:4:4 + EVF/LCD (as far as I have understood)

Thing is, this has not been commented for a while, and we all get curious....

Cheers!
