  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HI all,

I'm shooting a scene in a film where characters are in exactly the same position but the location changes between a pub, the front seats of a car and a final interior shot.

Is there a way of saving an R3D snapshot of a prior shot and having it up at 50% opacity asa reference for the next shoot's framing?

If not, any suggestions to best accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

I'd to be able to do this in-camera as well.

A video assist with normal HDSDI recorder and mixer would do. Just feed the camera and paused frame from the previous take/ the recorder to the mixer and make a 50/50 mix.
Usually a larger screen will help for these situations that is aimed so that the actors see the screen from where they stand / sit so that they can "correct themselves" into position. Having the video assist blending rapidly between the two feeds helps a lot to see where the oddities between the shots are.

Or just buy a small HD Dp7. It has an image overlay function. You can either take a snapshot of the monitor itself to overlay or feed it an image on an sd card. Makes it quick and easy. You could also do it Bjorn's way.

Matt what do u think of the dp7 as far as calibration. It took me a while to find AC7 OLED settings that worked.

It is basically spot on. I haven't seen an AC7, but the software in the DP7 is much better and has far better features so I'm assuming it handles calibration better.. Timur Civan ran a test with it next to a Sony Reference OLED and it was almost identical. I personally haven't touched any picture settings because it is spot on to my eyes and others seem to agree. I love it to be honest.

Well that's fantastic news. I contacted them recently and it seems the most wanted features like LUTs and SD card recording as well as the paralinx integration isn't working yet, but is scheduled for fall. Do you feel the monitor is somewhat weather sealed?

Yeah, features are being updated constantly. It has everything you need to shoot now, but the LUTs, proxy recording, and paralinx integration via X-Port is coming soon.

As far as weather sealed, I'm in southern California so weather is pretty consistently sunny. I would assume it's weather sealed enough to handle light dew or moisture, but I'd probably put a cover on it and my camera in that kind of weather anyways..

Rent a monitor that's capable of image overlay. That's the only way to get it exact.
