  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has Your Red Budget Grown?

YES !!! NAB 06 - thought 25-28k ... then 40k last fall .... easy looking at 60k+ ... it's the GLASS that is over 1/2 $$ ...

It has expanded significantly. Dratted options. I want it ALLLLLLL!

Oh, and now I have to convert all my HMI's to 40 watt GE's. Cursed light sensitivity!

originally i planned to spend $21K at most, now its looking like 28K but more than likely 30K - I plan to recoup half the cost of the camera within 3 months though, so its damn worth every penny

And this from the guy with "watching budgets shrink since 2000" as his sig ;)

Hey guys, I just hit $4000 for my rig built around a frikkin' HV20. So yeah, I am in a miniature version of your same situation, haha...

Bruce, have to ask... what will you be shooting? Documentaries? Features? Straight to DVD? Just curious.

Mine's gone down, because my bank account has gotten shallower while waiting. Stupid bills.

Bruce - this is basically my shot in terms of owning my own equipment....been waiting for about four years to "buy" my next camera...plus some jobs lined up make the budget a little more flexible then it would have been...thankfully!

Okay, this is going to be a pretty OT post. Sorry. Please ignore and move on if it offends. I am just answering questions ;)

Glad to hear that Adrian! Congrats on having the patience not to buy anything for the last four years. I think I am a cycle or two behind you ;) - 5 years ago I bought a second-hand DV camera (just a little Sony PC5), now I am going for the HV20. In the next 5 years hopefully I'll have saved enough for a Red Two or Mini or whatever... but I have been lucky - I was able to borrow / rent better cameras (Canon XL1s & XM1s shooting in 25p mode, as well as old Betacam cameras, PD150s, FX1s, ARRI 16mm cams, etc) if I had directing projects that merited it. If nobody wanted to lend me a camera for the project, it was usually a sign that the idea sucked... anyway I'll cross my fingers that my ideas are good enough to get access to a Red when I need it...

Low-budget music videos, spec commercials, shorts, etc. Like half of Hollywood, I have a feature script or two ready but need more of a directing reel in order to prove myself before anyone will get interested in taking a risk to help me make films. When I get closer to doing a feature, I'll use it to scout, do quick tests, shoot auditions, etc...

The second use for it is to shoot some elements for my day job doing movie / trailer / tv show titles. My friend and I have already used it to shoot some dust particles, etc for use in the gfx package for a show coming out called LA Ink.

Finally, I like to have a camera around me sometimes when I'm in South Africa. I'm still sad I can't afford a Red though... running around SA with it would be so much fun!

Oh hell yes. My budget was originally 23-25 + 9.5 for the lens which was going to be a year later, now it's 40k upfront!

I really need to be able to rent it out in order to survive cash flow, but I'm getting worried about that. It seems that many people on here operate in the "own it, and they will come" mode.

Not really. I'm still looking at $21K-23K for the basic package with still lenses. I'd love the "Bad Ass" rig, but it'll just have to wait.

Just because it's there, doesn't mean I need it. ;)

My budget just keeps moving up and getting higher and higher without doing anything or adding more money to it. All thanks to good old G.W.B. that American green back keeps heading down the toilet making anyones budget of any other currency climb a bit each day. If things keep going the way they are my Canadian dollars could actually be worth the same or more then US dollars by early fall. Its a little shocking when I remember the canadian buck being worth 63 cents to the US one just a few years ago.

Let's not forget Econ 101, that a falling US dollar is good for US business, though it does hurt if you want to purchase foreign goods. And regardless of whether your love or hate GWB, he has pretty much jack shit to do with the exchange rate, though it's pretty easy to kick the beaten dog.

Hell, I think when I was going to filmschool in Canada back in the early nineties that I might have gotten over $1.50 canadian for every US dollar. Crazy. It was good living for me at the time. :)

As for the RED, I'm going to have to be with Jaime on this. I need to stay low since I have no real reason to own this camera other than pure lust. :)

I also will need to rent most support gear for a while, like a beefier head. I'm even thinking of not using my Nikon's and just renting a Cooke zoom when needed.

Ah, hell, I don't know. All that said, and I'm sure that by the time I buy the thing the budget will have jumped up. I sure do like the two zooms coming out. :)

Are you HIGH?

You do know that he is the US president right?

No I don't. "PRESIDENT"? What does that mean? Explain...

See in this world that you live in there are different countries and you live in a country called the United States of America. Now each of these countries have a government system that have leaders that are sort of the bosses of these countries. Hope you are following all this so far. Well these bosses have one big boss that is called different things in different countries many are called "Prime Ministers" but in the country you live in yours is called a "President".

That should clear things up for you a bit. Glad I could help.

(Holy shit I heard the US school system was in trouble but I had no idea it was this bad.)

I've exceded my daily export of smart-ass, best go to bed now :-)
