  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone tried the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2?

Hi,
We are using it with our EPIC without any problem.....further you will require two din to BNC cables which do not come with the shuttle.

Other options are AJA KIpro mini,Pix ...
Thanks

… or Samurai.

It all depends on your needs. Hyperdeck is the only uncompressed one among these, all others are ProRes and/or DNxHD. The Samurai is the cheapest and OK if analog audio is not so important.

Ki Pro Mini is handicapped by the CF cards and no spanning, PIX uses SSDs, is very robust, offers both ProRes and DNxHD plus excellent audio.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
Harcharan, do you use the internal battery or pull power from a d-tap or other power source? If you use the internal battery would it get you through a full day of production?

Best, Peter

Hyperdeck2 does DNxHD as well so it is very interesting looking as it is by far the cheapest option ($327.75 at B&H). At that price it almost seems crazy not to have one.

I imagine those DIN cables are not even needed for HDMI recording?

Anyone tried HDMI capture on the Hyperdeck2? Any issue with recording from EPIC/SCARLET's HDMI? Also, any word if HDMI out has embedded audio?

Hey guys, I asked this in another thread but don't get a response. For Hyperdeck Shuttle owners: what are the physical dimensions of the unit? Can't seem to find this info anywhere and want to spec it into my rig. Thanks!

Is HDMI out a clean signal? Is is a 60i encapsulation or straight 24p implementation? What about variable frame rates, how are they handled?

I'm curious if anyone is using these for broadcast deliveries?? They just added timecode and they have RS-422 so in theory you should be able to create a master on them and connect it to a HD deck for broadcast deliveries? Yes?

Interesting....is all the matching metadata coming across? So that the AvidDNX HD proxies match you R3D files exactly? With matching timecode and file names?

Also, I've heard that if you set up a LUT in the EPIC/Scarlet, the proxies on the SDI recorders will bake in with that LUT. Any confirmation of this?

Thanks!

You can get clean HDMI, but like all signals from RED cameras, it's pure progressive, no PsF or pulldown added. Some recorders and even some screens don't like that, the Ninja for example. SDI normally is fine with all recorders (I have not tested the Hyperdeck yet).

Hi,
We use the internal battery...and recharge thru USB if required...

Further you can upgrade to latest build of EPIC for playback from camera as Mark suggested but no audio playback yet...Thats the reason we have one camera with shuttle...The moment playback comes on EPIC with audio we will upgrade...

Thanks

Harcharan

Dunno why BM didn't allow it to have different formats other than just uncompressed and DNxHD, Pro Res would be nice :-)

Can anyone confirm yea or no on timecode matching and clip names? Hd2 will be bought of it does. Dnxhd is perfect for my new offline system.

The tech support folks at BMD told me it does carry TC and SDI triggering, but no filenames. But for some reason he didn't sound completely sure... Anyone with real-world experience please let us know, I'd buy one too if it did...

SDI is not RAW r3d so when using SDI you are baking your footage in a colorspace (rec709 in this case) with or without a specific LUT.

Does anyone know if hdmi will auto
trigger record, or does only sdi do
auto triggering?

It works great! but man you go through hard drives like BUTTER!!!!

There is no need for it in the world of RED. You have a SSD card that captures even better files...

Hi Mark, it depends how you define "better".

As Red still haven't implemented several of the original specs, these external recorders currently provide the only way of recording 1080p full frame.
Yes, you lose RAW, which is not ideal, but maybe one day Red will eventually deliver the promised 1080p Full Frame internally.

Also, I don't know what budget you have on your projects, but I personally can't afford several 256 Gb Red SSDs.
So if I want to record an hours interview or 90 minute concert, then I can't do that with the Red 32Gb SSD.

So for these uses, an externally recorder is "better".
