SCARLET Scarlet is arguably the most anticipated camera in history. The anticipation is not without merit. Scarlet is the undertaking, on the part of the creative minds and resources of RED Digital Cinema, to produce a no compromise imaging powerhouse, both motion and still capable, at an affordable price, one that will share much of the technology of its big brother, EPIC, as well as accepting all of EPIC's accessories. Scarlet will be targeted to the professional; make no mistake, this is a system designed for professional use, but at a price point that will further RED's quest to democratize the process of film making. Scarlet will compete with Pro Video cameras in the six figure price range, pro video camcorders and, to some extent, the new crop of HDSLRs, but even the entry level Scarlet will offer more than twice the resolution of its HD competitors and produce a raw file that is visually lossless in its compression. Combined with RED's unparalleled color science technology and sensor expertise, the Scarlet image offers the resolution, dynamic range and "look" of film.

Apparently Canons new camera may only be 1920-1080 resolution (kinda seems like a "pro" DSLR for video)... if so all hopes rest with RED:

Is this what’s coming today?

Bare in mind, RED always says that most DSLR's and other camcorders don't actually shoot true HD 1920-1080 but merely pack more resolution into their holders; meaning their true resolution is just a little over 720p. This could still mean the Scarlet shoots 3k. But I too think it could mean 4k...sounds awesome!

Before anyone gets too excited, read the Epic description right above that Scarlet description. It says Epic has 6 times HD resolution. So they are comparing total number of PIXELS, NOT 4K Scarlet vs. 1980 HD. In terms of pixels, HD~2MP, Epic~14MP, Scarlet >4MP. Which is right in line with the 3K sensor Scarlet always had. As for whether that description is current or old, I really don't know. Just waiting.

If that's true, it's a huge hint to what's coming!

Entry level Scarlet >> so there will be differently priced models?
The entry level Scarlet will shoot more than 2.5x HD? Meaning it will shoot 3K
Some reading between the lines (assumptions, assumptions!) could suggest the
more expensive Scarlet might have 4K.

Just a few more hours :)

EDIT: read your post wrong. Sorry!

Uhm...no?

1080p = 2,07 Mio Pixel
3k = 5,3 Mio Pixel

-> 2,5 x HD. Scarlaet Entry Level is 3k and that´s just perfect!

Oh No! They just discovered that nothing works with anything! :o)

They just restored all the 'compatibility' check marks... which, interestingly, show the 16GB CF card IS still compatible with EPIC/Scarlet - which kinda confirms the previously talked about (by RED) CF-SSD adapter...

True, but the DSMC adapter is still not checked to working with Scarlet... A bit worrying. I'd favor shooting a SSD over a CF for the sheer fact I don't have to change them out as often.

In the worst case there will be an option to use CF cards or SSD's. So nothing to worry about that.
