  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has actual large-format cinematography ever been attempted?

Forgive me if this is a naive question, but I honestly can't find any information about this online.

Basically, have any films ever been shot on genuine large-format? Not medium-format, not 70mm, not VistaVision--actual large-format, as in 102×127mm or larger. I don't know much about this subject so maybe there's something obvious I'm missing here (as to why it wouldn't be possible), but yeah, I'm really curious.

Maybe it's just not practical with celluloid--in which case, maybe we'll see a large-format digital cinema camera someday?

The obvious issue on the digital sensor side would be read/reset speed. Some of that could be offset with larger photo sites to keep the total pixel count down, but there are practical limits to how big they could get - especially with BayerCFA tech that has to account for adjacent pixel offset in reconstruction. Perhaps a tiled sensor topology with dedicated processing/storage per section would solve some issues, but it would create other potential fail points.

The NSA,CIA and other abbreviations have those big things up in space (reversed Hubble's looking at you), but don't worry, you also paid for them.

there is a GG based large format camera called forbes. You can shoot your movie with it.

Okay, so there actually is a large-format digital video camera, and it costs over $100,000. I have no doubt that RED will be producing sensors with this technology in 10 or 15 years.

Here's some footage:

The only reason for larger formats are to cram more resolution into the picture. So with the viewing mediums of today 8k is quite plenty.
If you count in camera rigs shooting multiple 8k cameras I guesthose can be counted as large format. But usually then you only use a portion of the total canvas at the time when viewing it.

To scale up sensor size and lower resolution to not get into too high resolutions is not really gaining anything.

Did you bother to watch the video?

F*ing brilliant. (And a fantastic hack.)[/QUOTE]

I thought it looked really beautiful too... Definitely has different "crispy" / super-real quality in the center and a really honest yet "Deep" vingnetting ?

I used to shoot large glass plate 13 X 18 cm ... (lens 100m focal length Biogon the size of a dinner plate)... Theoretically if you do time lapse and scan it's a "Movie"...

^^^The pocket version of this is coming out next year.

Photo doesn't do it justice as it's much bigger appearing in real life and also super awesome in ORANGE. :-) Correction Lamegon lens. Lens is about 8" in diameter if memory serves me right. Those also did have large roll film backs especially for aerial stuff mounted on a special Gimbal through the aircraft... Here we are in "Terestrial"/ Close Range mode. Ultra precise camera.

Better sequence of pictures here ---> http://spszem.cz/storage/files/53/fot1-2-sk.pdf

Scale and resolution + focal lengths for Lens-cone. Usually large glass plate stereograms are shot. Kinda ancient but very very well engineered.

For the future of what's next mixed sizes would be good I think.

Why do people shoot large format photography?

The only ones who are doing it with a scientific reason are the ones with camera's up in space or in spy planes (300 Mpixels).

Mortals do it just for fun, like the guy in the video.

Hasselblad uses pixel shift to make a 400 Mpixel photo with a 100 Mpixel sony 53.4 x 40.0mm sensor(H6D).

What formats did Eadweard Muybridge Use ?

^^^ 50 seconds in... looks larger than Medium Format (edging to 4 x 5 " perhaps ?) not sure

Wow how did I miss this movie?
