Wishing all my fellow redusers a happy and exciting 2013.

Take a little step back and think about some crazy ideas and humble wishes that you would like RED to deliver in the coming year. No framerates on Scarlet, please.

I'll just start — a couple of years ago RED gave away a R1 for the best idea. The idea that won was that the camera could record a separate depth channel in the same resolution, thus giving totally new possibilities for post production. Would love to get that in a next generation camera/brain.

Jim has already mentioned that they are working on a Lightfield camera; would be cool to have one of those in a decent resolution.

I'd love it if RED could open up a bit more, and allow for camera plug-ins to be developed by 3rd parties — just think photo apps for iPhone on steroids. And while opening up, it would be amazing if 3rd parties would be allowed to develop hardware modules.

Not a dream, but a continuing hope, are for larger cheap, slow SSDs for documentary (Heck, maybe even a module that would accept 4 off-the-shelves SSDs and make a RAID out of them). And the possibility to delete at least the last shot.

Would also be fun to have the option for auto-iris with a programmable "smoothness" — where one could set priorities such as "preserve highlights", "preserve shadows", "balanced", etc.

I want the REDmote Pro asap, preferably delivered alongside the +1 in February.

Electronic lenses?

Happy New Year Martin and RUers!

I'll keep my ideas off air (best to get those to the folks who can implement them), but I'm expecting 2013 to be huge for Red and 4K. The revolution has begun, but we are just scratching the surface of where we are going with 4K delivery.

The potential of the Meizler Module as a production tool is going to be an amazing accomplishment for both 2D and 3D setups. I can see many additional tools that accompany this mindset and several auxiliary products that can add convenience and efficiency to both our shooting and post workflow.

I have one idea that I'll be emailing over to the Red Team early next year that can greatly improve and speed up post color correction/color accuracy. It's also not the most difficult thing in the world to implement.

Additionally, Dragon represents something that has yet to be achieved with a digital cinema camera. It sounds more and more like it's delivering even more than we all expected as well. We don't know exactly what Dragon looks like yet, but when it lands, it's going to be huge.

I wish everyone on RedUser a very Happy and prosperous new year!

As of yet, I haven't posted much on RedUser and the reason for that is, that I do not own a RED yet. I have shot numerous films with the EPIC and also with the Scarlet, but as of yet I am not an owner.

In 2012 I have shot documentaries in many different countries with my FS100. China, Australia, Germany, US, Great Britain and more. In 2013 I want to visit these countries and many more again. I know that whenever I have a question about RED, especially the EPIC, I can come here. I hope that I can become an EPIC owner before my 18th birthday on the 12th of July. I want to express my passion through the beauty of what RED cameras capture.

Here's to a successful 2013 to all of you!

Best,
Phil

Happy New Year to all RED Users (and non-users)! I just had to post this still taken by my dive buddy/partner, Erin Quigley. And, although you can't see that I'm driving a Gates Deep Epic you can bet that next year I'll be shooting that scene on an Epic Monochrome! Bring it on (dream) baby!!! Thanks to Jim, Jarred, and the entire RED team for bringing us the most awesome technology that fits in the palm of your hand (or in a waterproof housing...)

Peace - Ron

A very Happy New Year to you and our loved ones, Martin, and i take this chance to also wish the Red team, to Jim and Jarred the same and to give a sincere thank you for still taking the time to talk to us redusers and to keep coming back here, survive all the crap we speak and somehow extract the glimpses of gold we sometimes come out with (yes, I mean constructive criticism and input :) ). I wish that reduser just keeps this excellent communication channel, with Brent and Co listening and keeping us up to date on what is going on.

As for the community, its just fantastic and I wish for 2013 to just keep this going!

New year wishes? Dragon! Cheaper 128 GP SSD Cards! Redray projector! Stronger Redvolts (Love the side handle! Just give me a bit more power on the Redvolts, Red Team!) Prores Module but capable of recording 4k prores- real game changer! And some more Red branded products for production! Would love to have a Red Clap Board (non software version), a Red Model of Oakley glasses... Red Lighting? Like Arri? Why not? Anyway, Happy new year everyone, from Macau!

Great thread. Tech aside, I feel honoured being part of a community here at Reduser. I know it may not seem like that at times but there truly are some talented people on this forum. I have learned a ton and I look forward to a prosperous 2013 for myself as well as RED. Keep pushing...be healthy...and be kind to the planet and others. Peace out :)

a couple of years ago RED gave away a R1 for the best idea.

The year was 2006. First prize was an R1 reservation.
One t-shirt seems to have been lost in the mail.

:)

Best wishes in the New Year...

It may sound silly to some, and many may poke fun at the notion, but here we go...

Camera Lock/Limit controls with local and remote activation/locking

A camera lock function that would disable the camera, or certain functions of the camera, and would be adjustable.

This opens up new levels of control and security.

Lock/Limit selectable control modes

Menu based Lock/Limit User selectable modes
A) Complete camera Lock (akin to a phone lock)
B) Record/and settings Lock
C) Settings Lock
D) Record Lock
E) Custom (choose specific functions to lock when activated)
i. would connect to a menu with a long list of camera functions/variables and
a check boxes next to each as to allow the user to pick what they specifically want to limit access to.

- The Lock/Limit ability gives the Director, DP, or even the client more control of camera use on set/location

Example 1 - Sensitive Client
A client wants to know without any doubt that recording will not occur before or after a certain time.
Such clients can interupt setup flows and waste time by constantly asking for confirmation that recording is not active.
This could be related to Sensitive Government/Military/Corporate/Fashion related projects, where there is an absolute need or security concern to control what is recorded.
The REDkey product described further below would be ideal to hand to such clients.

Example 2 - Presidential "football" control of Camera operation
A Director/DP on could limit the ability of the cam op/2nd AC from changing camera settings or recording at the wrong time, either due to user error or accident when breaking down/setting up a shot.
This is similar to the remote "football" a US president to rumored to have to release a nuclear strike. Once a shot is setup and takes are ready to commence, a DP/Director could "release" the record function (enable recording).
This would limit/reduce money and time wasted from filling up mags or having to reshoot because a an unauthorized setting change was made

- The Lock/Limit function provides enhanced security and reduces risk of theft/camera loss

Example 3 - Crew member gets "Red Fever" (or an unscrupulous third party notices a RED production)
A member of the crew or an acquaintance becomes infatuated/obsessed with the Red "Precious" and attempts to steal/borrow it w/out approval. The lock function remind them that even if they managed to get the camera they wouldn't be able to even use it. Obviously, this would also severally limit the ability to sell stolen Red cameras.

Remote/Local Activation/Release Methods

REMOTE USE
A) REDmote

A firmware update for Redmote would implement full control to lock/limit/release cameras it is paired to.
If linked to multiple cameras, specific cameras could be linked to a user selectable hotkey or selected by menu.
Special care would need to be made to ensure a REDmote could not be hacked and enable an unscrupulous non involved third party character from "shutting down" a production remotely.
Works with REDlock

B) REDkey (new device) Est MSRP $200~300

Essentially a super scaled down redmote with pairing ability that is a remote trigger similar to those used with key-chain controls used for auto alarms.
It transmits a release at simple push of a button that releases the camera. Has a small speaker to give audio confirmation when button was pressed.
There could be a safety lock switch to ensure it doesn't accidentally go off.
I suspect it should have 3 to 5 buttons that could be configured via mini USB interface.
Various options could available such s following:
1) Record Release/Lock and assignable to a specific camera, a selection of cameras, or all
2) Settings Release/Lock and assignable to a specific camera, a selection of cameras, or all
3) Full Release/Lock and assignable to a specific camera, a selection of cameras, or all
4) Power Off/On and assignable to a specific camera, a selection of cameras, or all
5) Assign confirmation sounds from small built in sound library, upload a custom sound, or no sound
- to a specific button, a selection of buttons, or all

LOCAL USE
A) RED Pro Touch (various models)

A camera firmware update would provide access to the new lock/limit menu.
A character based code can be created, that is either alpha, alpha+numeric or numeric to release/activate the Lock or Limit
Additionally, a motion based gesture can be created to to release/activate the Lock or Limit - Can not be created/saved until a character based code is created.
Additionally a quick key can be added to immediately activate the lock limit.
In the lock/limit menu there would be an option to either immediately activate the lock/limit or require a code to do so (later is default).
When in a Locked state, a button press is needed to bring up an unlock display prompt
When in a limit state, an attempt to activate said limited function brings up a unlock display prompt (with a cancel prompt option)

B) RED Side Handle

A camera firmware update would provide access to the new lock/limit menu.
A code can be created, that is either alpha+numeric or numeric to release/activate the Lock or Limit

C) REDlock Module (new device) est. MSRP $2000~2500

The ultimate in RED camera usage Control and Security.
Built in Wireless/LAN function - Camera can be controlled/Locked/Limited either over wifi or LAN via Web or stand-alone Client
Built in GPS Locator/Tracker
Once paired and activated to RED camera, it must remain bolted to camera for said camera to work. Can be deactivated/unpaired as needed with separate user created disconnect security code
If camera is turned on w/out it's REDlock, a warning will display "REDlock not connected or missing. Please reconnect REDlock or Contact RED Digital Cinema for assistance with error code RLM01" then power off.
If someone other then the authorized owner of said RED camera calls in about the error, they will be instructed to send it in to RED for repair and provide a free shipping label. Once recieved by RED the owner will be contacted and charged a fee for recovery, evaluation, and recovery.
In the event the camera is turned on/off more then three times when in a locked state with the REDkey connected the wireless or LAN will attempt to connect to availible networks and transmit its GPS location to Owner/RED
REDlock can be removed from camera for additional security during transport of camera and will include set of different sized warning stickers that can applied to the Brain and/or Transport Case.
Option to purchase custom Transport brain case with warnings already detailed.
Works with REDmote and REDkey

Backdoor/Emergency Access

In the event the REDmote or REDkey is lost/misplaced A special 3 button user created combination pressed and held for 15 seconds would temporarily unlock the camera until next power cycle.
Any DSMC module or accessory that has user configurable buttons can be used to create the special 3 button combo code.
Once in Backdoor/Emergency Access mode the lock can be deactivated via menus and entering user created character based code.
Failure to input the correct code three times in a row would disable the Backdoor/Emergency Access and require the camera to sent to RED*

*If paired REDmote or REDkey is recovered/found, access can be restore and no need to send to RED

Important Concern

There is currently already a method to press and hold a button for a specific duration that will result in resetting a RED camera to factory defaults.
Care must me made to ensure that the factory reset function call is modified to NOT clear the hexadecimal/memory address space used to store the Lock/Limit variables when initialized.

So those are my thoughts, I suspect there is some good ideas in the above "Security/Control Eco-sphere" I suggested above.
This is way more then just "putting a car alarm on a camera".
It's ultimately about control, something most RED operators/owners appreciate.
