Hey guys,

I'm planning on building a Hackintosh & using the Apple 27" Cinema Display so that I can make easy upgrades at the end of each year.

Anyone here doing this & using Premiere CS6? Do you run into constant issues each time Apple updates OS X? Any other issues that should concern me? If it's like a jailbroken iPhone, I probably won't want to deal with the constant fixes/hassles every time the OS is updated.

To my knowledge a hackintosh can be stable but you need to be VERY knowledgable about PC / MAC technical troubleshooting. If you are not - and I'm talking about system level tweaks before OSx loads, PC bios, using terminal commands in unix / windows etc.. Don't even think about it because you'll be spending more time fixing and tweaking instead of actually working. It is MUCH MUCH MUCH worse than an iPhone jailbreak trust me. If you need a MAC / OSx my advice to you is to buy a real one. At least you will have re-sale value. PCs start to devalue the moment you slide your credit card in the register at the store - and fast too. Like you said updates can also break your system.

If you need to work and you have hard deliveries on a daily basis stay away unless you really know what you are doing. If you do personal RED projects with no client pressure and you love building PCs then creating a mega turbo maniac machine with water cooled radiators and blinking lights might be the "fun" time you are looking for. :)

Thanks for the info,

I'm actually proficient with all of those things, so I think I'm going to take the risk this time around. I always have my MacBook Pro which can (hopefully) pull me out of potential jams with time sensitive projects.

If it becomes a nightmare, then I'll just buy a Mac Pro eventually & use this thing as a martini table.

CS6 on OS 10.8.2 has been very reliable and so Resolve has been outstanding i its latest release, both on older Mac Pro's. If you want an alternative box with more card slots Id go for Linux but I dont know if Adobe is supported.

I have a 12 core myself and it chews renders, but I have been through some major heartache over the last two years. I lost two weeks real time and about a decade off my life when upgrading my GPU.

I highly recommend turning off OS updates once you are up and running. If you have time to sit and dig through forums to find solutions and are comfortable under the hood, then the cost/performance ratio makes a Hackintosh a no brainer.

Thanks Doug, it definitely seems that way! I feel like the time I lose getting everything up & running is easily paid off by low initial cost & time saved with rendering/performance.

Just thought I'd post an update about this...parts arrived last week:

Took me 2 hrs to build, 2 hours to install OS & get it up and running flawlessly. All of my ports/components/peripherals work like a charm & this thing blows any 27" iMac I've used out of the water (feels very much like a high end Mac Pro). No issues whatsoever as of yet.

Thanks for the confidence Doug...this is highly recommended to anyone who can build PCs and has an advanced knowledge of troubleshooting BIOS/OS's/ETC.

Hi Ryan

Can you specify your system config? I'm thinking about building a Hackintosh as there seems evidence that a new Mac Pro won't arrive until 2014, a 3g Mac is just not an option in this 6g world, I am building a 4k Resolve..

Thanks!

Question: Why not go PC? FCP is very out of date, and every other important program runs on Windows. Save yourself Hackintosh headaches.

Hi Shane,

I built a 3.5Ghz Quad Core i7 w/ 32GB 1600Mhz Ram, SanDisk SSD for OSX & Video apps (this is crucial), GeForce GTX 680 GPU

Here are some awesome guides that you can follow...find one that you like, modify the build if necessary; just be sure that any modified parts are proven to be compatible/tested by other users' builds:

My recommendation; Make sure your GPU does display port or mini display port & get a 27" Apple Cinema Display. I had audio problems until I output to the ACD through displayport.

@Niko - mine runs like a charm...no issues at all

I have pretty much the same build with the 3770K. Its VERY stable. Ive had one kernel error in 6 months. It works better than my 2009 Mac Pro. Took me around 6 hours to get it to install ML.

The same here... 2 hacks work very stable (i5 3570K). Only the Z800 with 8 cores had some troubles with Premiere and 5K Redfiles. Premiere closes with an error and starts again with no work lost. If i edit the audio keyframes the window got some visual problems. Dunno if this is a Adobe problem or from the hack...
