Is anyone here running a hackintosh setup that works?

We just build one and I feel like the performance isn't really up to par..

Just installed a TITAN-X card with drivers and still seems to lag in premier. If i plug our second 4k monitor in its pretty much usless.

Have to edit everything at 1/4 res...

Any experienced builders out there???

I built one ... But wanted to try an amd chip and now I'm going to go to an Intel. The amd is ok but think the Intel will perform much better. I also have a Titan x in it. I am able to edit in realtime but am running everything off of ssd's. I am running 32 gb of ddr3 but M going to go up to 64 of ddr4 with the Intel . I think all of that will perform much better.

32gb 500 gb SSD.

Was working off of a thunderbolt g-raid drive where the footage was located.

I'm not so surprised!
It needs a lot more cpu!

or just does not work the turbo boost in osx.

How to do geeckbench?

Have not tested geekbench.

Our mac pro laptops work better with less CPU. it a GPU problem.

geekbech is about 14000?
And cuda-z what is The performance?

Dont forget that for playback you need CPU power not just a beast GPU. From a DIT Facebook group I am part of while I was discussing a new system.

"R3D works in two ways. File decompression. Without a Red Rocket this is done on our CPU's. For real time full debayer decompression of 6k dragon footage you need 20+ cores.

The second part is the debayering. Without a RR again this can be done on the GPU. But from tests I've read one Titan-x is just about enough to do full quality 6k debayer if you also have a fast raid setup."

Those 4 cores 8 threads sadly wont be getting you the speeds you may be expecting - Im currently rocking 6 cores 12 thread with a 780ti got me pretty good playback with the Epic 5K but Dragon 6K Im not even close to a full time real playback.

If you knew all this already - it may be a driver issue somewhere along the line which is always the problem with Hackintoshes :/ Did you do any tests with the same system on a Windows install ? that might be worth a try to see what you can expect on a windows machine.

EDIT - Found some other peoples benchmarks -

A quad core machine can't decompress the file fast enough for ya.

Im not thinking this is a CPU issue..

our mac laptops peform almost the same if not better than this. I could see dragon footage.. But there are plenty of other people that are able to work with 6k files with quadcore.

GPU is ok
yep in your laptop turbo boost work, is Apple made, but in your hack work? you are sure your cpu go to 3.9ghz? in you bios is enable turbo boost?
and in Davinci is better playback?

but I am convinced that more than 1/4, maybe overclocking managed to get up to 1/2 with this cpu.
Dragon files, or Epic?
Which compression?

This is definitely not a GPU issue. I would say it needs some digging into to figure out just what the problem is for sure. But performance issues with Hackintosh systems are pretty common as OS X just doesn't properly support many chipset and CPU combinations to fully support turbo speeds and other operations. However, an i7-4770K should perform just fine here. And it seems you're clocking fine at 4.1GHz.. So I'm not sure. What are you running for storage? And when you say you have to edit everything at 1/4 res, are we talking 6KFF Dragon clips or something else? And what sort of edits? How is playback in RC-X? You should be able to play back 6K full Dragon clips at 1/4 res there with ease and should do 1/2 res without a hiccup in RC-X, but it may need a few seconds to buffer up.

A quad-core chip is going to fall short and, IMO, your CPU and RAM are not fully up to snuff to drive that Titan X GPU.

What Apple laptops do you have that can do better? I can't edit 6K Dragon clips at 1/4 res on my MBP systems -- not enough RAM or GPU/CPU horsepower. So I guess we need some level of clarification for setting a benchmark here to know if there really is a problem.

Cinebench is a pointless and horrible benchmarking tool, IMO. Unless they have drastically re-worked the latest version, as I have not used it in the past 18 months or so, then it's still pointless. Last I used it, the benchmark wouldn't tax any CPU at any serious level or get turbo speeds to properly kick in. The OpenGL portion was very dated and based on many legacy operations, often giving better scores on older and inferior GPUs that had better support for legacy and deprecated GL calls. FX4800 usually outperforming a Quadro K5000 in the test, as an example. When your Titan X is scoring less than 30% better than a K4000 (a nearly worthless GPU), you know there's some funky stuff going on and this is a Cinebench deal, not your system here. Those scores look right there.

I was hoping you would chime in..

For instance.

Ill say 4k HD 120fps in premier will not play at 1/2 res. It plays yes but skips and jumps.. 1/4 res with one monitor it seems to play but sometimes skips.

If I have a stacked timeline it makes it worse it seems. In RCX performance seems alot better. I DID order another Titan-X which will be here tues but realized osx doesnt support SLI which is lame.

If it were up to me id run the thing as a PC forever but my partners are MAC guys.. I've always had a PC background.

I also have to unplug one of the 4k monitors as well. If you have both plugged in the whole computer is worthless.

As for storage im running a single SSD with all the programs on that. Since my last test the footage just on a thunderbolt g drive.. But I have a 8 bay thunder 2 raid im going to hook up to it when I get to office this week.

Jeff do you think it would make a HUGE difference if I just built a new machine with an 8 core in it? x99 board with a 5960x ?

Im going to install windows on another SSD drive I have and run a benchmark test with it. I was even going to throw the other card in it and run it SLI and see. Just not what to do here. This is extremely frustrating

I have a Z87 i7 4770k hackintosh clocked at 4.1 GHz, with an O.C. GTX 770, it gets better benchmarks and performance than that. My guess is that you have additional PCI-e cards on the motherboard that limit the Titan GPU to only x8 PCI-e lanes or you have it in the wrong PCI-e slot.

If I populate my motherboard with additional PCI-e cards, then my GTX 770 GPU is limited to x8 PCI-e lanes and gets almost exactly the same benchmark you posted and seems a bit unresponsive sometimes.
