Hey guys,

I've recently had my account hacked, and have received several calls from various people in regards to various pieces of 'equipment' i have for sale, which i obviously do not.

REDuser isn't the only place this has happened, because whoever has hacked my account has also been selling false gear on cinematography.com

I have been trying to contact the RED team via the contact form for some time now and i cannot get a response. I'd just like some help to make my account safe and hopefully find who this person was.

wow, there should be an instant button you can press to say your account was hacked and they can suspend it or have your password reset.

If there is, i have no idea where it is, but your right there should be some sort of instant report. Especially when I'm selling equipment and theres money involved. Pretty annoying!

Within approximately 3 minutes of receiving your Reported Post email hit my inbox I investigated the email account linked to that account. It's very, very likely your user name and password were "phished".

Within 6 minutes of receiving that email I banned the user permanently.

You need to take major steps from here and investigate your computer(s) to see if their is any lingering virus or malware present or if you've logged into these accounts from another computer that may be compromised.

As important as these accounts are to you, the person who did this may have much more valuable information like credit cards, addresses, etc.

I went to investigate and potentially lock/ban that reported account as well and saw it was already taken care of. On another note, in the past we have seen known scammers come along and claim they have been hacked or mystery accounts pop up to try and vouch for members who have been banned in connection with scamming activity. As a moderator it is very difficult to make sense of a lot of this as there is no way to truly investigate or check up on any of these claims. In then end users get banned and I'm sure there is some collateral damage in all of this and non-scammer casualties. Unfortunately that is the ugly reality we live in.

If an account is hacked here, or anywhere else, one must take whatever steps necessary to secure their data and identity. Change all their passwords everywhere they go, starting with email accounts that can be used for account recovery.

Most hacked accounts, whether it's an online forum like this one or email or iCloud or whatever, are compromised through phishing traps or stolen data packets, cookies, etc.. on public or insecure WiFi networks. Hotel has WiFi? Awesome... Don't use it. WiFi at Starbucks? On your flight? Yeah, don't do it unless you're confident in your computer's/ device's security. And then, if you do, don't do email or login to a forum like this one, go shopping, etc...

Should change the end of the title to "then got help from Red team within 6 minutes"

yep, +1

Perhaps I'm being cynical, but that was my first impression when reading the OP; why would a scammer target a user with only 4 posts as a potential account from which to defraud other users on a forum which expressly and strongly discourages buying anything from such accounts with almost no history?
Again, perhaps I'm off base, but the scenario of a scammer trying to "earn credibility" in this community by making the claim of being hacked seems more likely than a hacker/scammer targeting an account with 4 posts and thus almost no credibility.

Thanks, Phil.

Remember, REDUSER is not controlled by RED, but by the REDUSER community...
