  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

gut feeling, 2/3 might still be alive

The cancellation of 2/3 program is what surprised me the most.
I was supposed to get a couple of those for my docu work and "b" cam to go along with Epic.
Had actually spend large sum of money on the s16 lenses, including latest purchase 2 months ago on the s16mm zoom.
Had we known at least that the production of Scarlet 2/3 interchangeable is in question...
I went to NAB for reassurance and was pleased to play with Scarlets, no one told me that there is any uncertainty...
If there is a problem with the lens, to hard to overcame, why not go along with interchangeable and later add manual lens?

Ohh well...
Happy for the rest who will get redesigned Scarlet though.

Cheers

they may or may not be cancelled you never know - Jim only confirmed that the x8 fixed lens had a fatal flaw

the interchangeable brain would sell well and make a lot of money, the only thing preventing its sale is the future proof label

crazy thing is the scarlet-x resolves 3.2k at 24p / 25p so its not future proof either. I see a double standard

I would buy a Fixed Scarlet even with a flaw on the lens...I cant afford Scarlet X, I wish I could, but I cant..not all have wages like in US..in my country we earn 250 euro (everage wage)

I Love Red though...

I think this is what may be frustrating some of us. Red talked so much about cameras in the past and generated so much anticipation, that some of us started to make plans around that. And while we've grown to expect some change from Red, not to have the previous plans thrown completely out the window without warning.

I don't want to be overly critical here. The camera Red has produce as Scarlet-X, is what appears to be a fantastic product at a great price. While the proof will be in the pudding when the camera comes out, we see footage, and hear feedback from users in the field pushing it hard, I think it's going to make a great splash. And if I do earn/save more money and don't buy something else, I'll seriously consider this new Scarlet-X in the future.

Djordje,

Where are you based in?

I will be in Montenegro soon...

I was thinking - how can they be throwing away all the R & D? We saw footage, Hutson was running around with one at that convention ... etc etc

plus Joseph Hutson let a little harmless something slip.

Remember how he started hanging around at red hq, remember how he posted a scarlet lens thread that became a sticky and he was calling the cameras scarlet-c and scarlet-f ?

Well up until that time no one from red had used those names and this new scarlet is called scarlet-x which fits in with the naming convention.

Also, if they were only going to release 1 scarlet, why not call it scarlet?

Interesting points you make there.

For some clarification, I'm just another 1 of 42,000 REDusers. I don't always know what's up. I texted Jarred my final prediction of the Scarlet a few days ago, and of course I was WAY off. I never saw it coming like this.

As far as the C-Scarlet and F-Scarlet, that was never anything endorsed by RED. I just used the terminology on the Social Networking sites (Twitter) to make it shorter. When others started repeating, I used it on REDuser as well. Apparently it only made things more confusing:

BTW.. I have no idea what a Scarlet-C is.

Also, a lot of times it is not RED who decides what is a sticky and what isn't. In this particular case, I always doubted it was an employee at RED.

I would like to think the 2/3" format is still alive, but here's a big point to keep in mind. BigJon spent a long time at RED with the Scarlet being his "baby" in the oven. His retirement speaks volumes to me about the future of Scarlet http://www.linkedin.com/pub/jon-sagud/7/67/9a7

LOL You wish ;-) Let it be! I am joking, I will. Just despite the growing up of reduser and subsequent increase of private messages @ my box, I have tried to move anyone to a most accessible email address provider. Send me an email to mail(dot)emanuelag(at)gmail(dot)com

I appreciate your culture and people. God made the men, first the women. Devil didn't want to forget the politics and the press :D

Montenegro has been my decision sometimes against dissonant voices. Shame on them! :)

We'll be shooting somewhere until next April when we think we'll have it finished. If you'd like to be there for the 2nd part of this project shot till last month in NZ:

Not a trailer, the editor was too much enthusiastic when wrote that! LOL Choose the highest 1080p HD version available please.
Shot on Canon 5D Mark II, looking for 35mm DOF on budget as much as possible.
Original score.

...drop a bell

Cheers from Rome,

Emanuel

I like Scarlet X but will most likely stick with Epic for our S35 most of our work.

I also think 2/3 is important not so much in pixel count or whatever but because of the support for 2/3 and S16mm glass with either small lens size, extended zoom range and other attributes that S32mm lenses dont have. Perhaps, Crimson or Ruby or some other such name can be given to Red 2/3 cameras in future and the deployment is just on hold not binned.

I think something went wrong at Red...
This is not the way of presenting a new product to the world.
Scarlet has taken the place of Epic s... It is not a new line of Red cameras.

Something has happend and changed their strategy and the silence from Red
is not something we are used to.

It is not about a few people here, to many people around the globe
feel the same way.

I hope they will get over it, and continue to do the best they can.

I wish them all the best

While people like me will be here (but the weekend ends today and PRO people are used to be busy on working days ;) they won't need to bother :D

Where are your numbers? I have mine. Besides/beyond the people who fight for living in the real world I have the pleasure to be in touch with, take a look on the number of previous posts asking a sub-USD10k 35mm solution on reduser, dvxuser and you can keep going in any forum for indie moviemakers out there. As of today, all the doubters (even haters) have shut up their mouths. And are ordering the new affordable Scarlet-X 'cause now this company can serve them once RED is reachable in their bank account, not only from their keyboard/mouse combo. Could you imagine? :)

It's the people who either didn't have enough money for an Epic-s or those who needed the 2/3" for specific tasks.
Obviously, everyone who was waiting for the Epic and the Epic-s were pleased, for which in turn they side with Red to defend them against people who are 'overreacting' in their eyes. (which ofcourse isn't a hard thing to do when you're not the one on the receiving end) Believe me, if the same thing happened to Epic or Epic-s, you'd all be crying wolf just as hard.

The fact is that Jim just pulled a giant dick-move on the ones who either needed a 2/3" or couldn't afford anything else. They should have atleast given us information on the dropping of the 2/3" when they made the decision, which didn't happen overnight.
Now, i'm a very happy Epic owner. But i truly needed the 2/3" for certain tasks, which is why i'm disappointed in the way Red handled this situation. But it appears like they don't give much of a sh*t.

But yeah, time to get over it.
Red won't make your movies better. The person behind the camera does.

For the love of god.
Stop the insanity!
Put the gun down!

Lets end this 2/3 inch Dog Day Afternoon. It's sad, but it ain't going to rise from the ashes. There are 70 million canon lenses out there and you want RED to make mini primes with their own mount system that only works on a RED camera because it might be cute? That would be a colossal waste of resources.

Take the mini compact prime RD and turn into compact RPP'S in pl mount. That would be a money maker.
It's over.

2/3s is dead...but that was one hell of a set of Prototypes they made...insane...

I understand people would buy with the flaws but the thing is the flaw in it all is probably something that would ruin much of their reputation when sold on mass....

It's like giving candy to a child that they probably won't like...you tell them, they want it still, you argue and say they really don't want it, they want it even more, you give it to them, they dislike the taste and a whole rant begins...

Keeping it simple, its dead, Scarlet-X is out of reach for most but in time to come lets hope that some miracle will happen that RED maybe able to drop 1 or 2K from the price....Battletested Scarlet-Xs anyone? I mean after all, there will be people who will be selling these just like they have EPICs and R1s, just hang on, anythings possible...

Though even a 2/3s with a 7K package price would still beef out to be around 14K with all goods and up and ready to shoot, those mini primes wouldn't come cheap nor does the media or batteries...
