I wonder if this will mean Peter Jackson taking over and shooting 3D with EPICs?

Guillermo Del Toro announced today that he is no longer directing the two movies based on J.R.R Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”, but will continue to co-write the screenplays. Out of respect to the legions of loyal Tolkien fans, both Guillermo and Peter Jackson wanted to break the news to The One Ring first. They are both committed to protecting The Hobbit and will do everything in their power to ensure the films are everything that the fans want them to be.

“In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming “The Hobbit,” I am faced with the hardest decision of my life”, says Guillermo. “After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures. I remain grateful to Peter, Fran and Philippa Boyens, New Line and Warner Brothers and to all my crew in New Zealand. I’ve been privileged to work in one of the greatest countries on earth with some of the best people ever in our craft and my life will be forever changed. The blessings have been plenty, but the mounting pressures of conflicting schedules have overwhelmed the time slot originally allocated for the project. Both as a co-writer and as a director, I wlsh the production nothing but the very best of luck and I will be first in line to see the finished product. I remain an ally to it and its makers, present and future, and fully support a smooth transition to a new director”.

“We feel very sad to see Guillermo leave the Hobbit, but he has kept us fully in the loop and we understand how the protracted development time on these two films, due to reasons beyond anyone’s control – has compromised his commitment to other long term projects”, says Executive Producer Peter Jackson. “The bottom line is that Guillermo just didn’t feel he could commit six years to living in New Zealand, exclusively making these films, when his original commitment was for three years. Guillermo is one of the most remarkable creative spirits I’ve ever encountered and it has been a complete joy working with him. Guillermo’s strong vision is engrained into the scripts and designs of these two films, which are extremely fortunate to be blessed with his creative DNA”.

“Guillermo is co-writing the Hobbit screenplays with Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh and myself, and happily our writing partnership will continue for several more months, until the scripts are fine tuned and polished” says Jackson. “New Line and Warner Bros will sit down with us this week, to ensure a smooth and uneventful transition, as we secure a new director for the Hobbit. We do not anticipate any delay or disruption to ongoing pre-production work”.

The Hobbit is planned as two motion pictures, co-produced by New Line Cinema and MGM. They are scheduled for release in Dec 2012 and Dec 2013.

There are only 3 movies in the foreseeable future that I am actually hyping up for myself, one being the inevitable third Batman, and the other two being these Hobbit films.

I really hope they find someone good for these...Sad to see Del Toro leaving.

Wow, that's disappointing. I hope that whomever takes the reigns from here has a strong original vision. I'd hate to see this go down the same road of creative homogenization as say... something like Clash of the Titans.

This is very sad news. He's packed his baggins and left Hobbiton. I was really geared up for this, it would have been phenomenal. It'll still have his touch...but who to direct?

In my mind it needs something...you can't go from Del Toro to Mc G.

Try and get someone like:

Takashi Miike
Fruit Chan
Park Chan-Wook

Not sure that Miike would be able to sit still for three years...or make a 12A film but hey you get where i'm going with this.

There is two ways to go. Hire an invisible director as a hired gun to just tie up and carry on.

Hire a distinctive visual director that can marry his style with Del Toro.

- Direct it yourself.

Now you believe me Joseph? Told you that there was more then one Hobbit didn't I? ;~) The fact that there are now "TWO" movies instead of one, first came up when discussing "Chronicles of Perseverance" made in Parts, instead of cutting so much of the story just to fit it all in one single Movie, and the Hobbit, turned out to be exactly in the same position, too much to tell and too little time at hand in one movie, even a 3 and a half hour long one, so I applaud Peter's decision to make the Hobbit in "TWO" movies.

However sad the news truly is, I fill time is on my side on this one as I was afraid all the shooting for the Hobbit's would have been done by the time I would be traveling to NZ, but now looks like I will arrived possibly right at the start of principal photography, great!!

I'd guess Peter Jackson steps back up. It's hard to think of another filmmaker who really gets that series and has the chops. I mean it ain't Harry Potter... But we'll see...

Okay, I'll bite. It's sad to see him go, but I never wanted anyone other than Peter Jackson making it in the first place (and I do hope he steps back up; it's sort of become his own little brainchild). Anyhow, I *CERTAINLY* hope they don't put some crap director to the plate...for their own sake

Why did he not do it in the first place?

He said (P.Jackson) that he wanted to see someone else envision
the Hobbit movie(s) and to reinvigorate it. Also at that time couple
years ago am sure he was still physically tired from the LOTR movies.
But really fans are expecting his vision on these Hobbit movies so
why have someone else do it.

Del Toro's statement is abit odd and political..it could be the real deal..or it
could be that we aren't getting the full story.

Thanks Steve, makes sense about him being tired from LOTR..and yes,the other stuff seems a bit fishy..

I hope Mr Jackson ends up doing them..

No, I've always known that there would be two films. You were trying to tell me they were making 3. Which, if they do, it'd be awesome but they haven't indicated such a thing. :attention9ha:

haha! :001_tongue:

The Hobbit lacks the epic scale of the second two LOTR Films. It is more in touch with Fellowship of the Ring (which is my favourite of the three) in terms of scale.

I think Del Toro's style would have lent itself nicely to The Hobbit, which I would describe as a lot more "quirky" and mysterious than LOTR. There would be room for Del Toro's strange creature designs, and odd characters.

Take Pan's Labyrinth for example. A lot of the creatures in that film were there to serve a purpose, for example the Giant Toad, and the man with eyes on his hands. But none of them had a background story or explanation for being...they simply "were". That is the style of The Hobbit, odd creatures and characters, who are there because people and creatures like them populate Middle Earth. The Hobbit got the message across that it is an entirely different world to our own.

LOTR on the other hand is similar to our own world. The entire Trilogy is a Metaphor for the Second World war.

Anyway, I for one am quite upset about this news. Reading it on IGN this morning put a downer on my day. All I can do is pray that Christopher Nolan doesn't step out of the Batman 3 project, and the JJ Abrams directs a Star Strek sequel...

Also, can a moderator please change my username to Ameer Azari. Thanks! :D
