  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Guillermo Del Toro departs “The Hobbit”

No, I've always known that there would be two films. You were trying to tell me they were making 3. Which, if they do, it'd be awesome but they haven't indicated such a thing. :attention9ha:

haha! :001_tongue:

Well Joseph, I did said 3, and they could even be 5 for that matter, but you never said 2, you said "ONE" and were surprised when I said that there were more then one, so I guess.. :attention9ha: haha! :001_tongue:

BTW, on a separate note, I did tried to talk to some one about bringing you along, but you need to be 18.

Edit, okay I guess we were both right an wrong in miss understanding each other, ah ah, and okay since you are 19 then all is cool.

Great ! was never a fan ...blunt but true!

Edit: i should really back that comment up with something... but im not going to !

I disrespectfully disagree

EDIT: I don't really want Jackson to do it. Need a new flavour in the mix which is what Del Toro was. I think they need to look to the east. I wouldn't be averse to someone like John Hillcoat directing it. Just please none of the usual suspects...and no Uwe BOll.

Uwe Boll would be a disaster of craptastic proportions. I doubt that Jackson would find himself in much agreeance with him...

The day Peter Jackson produces a film with Uwe Boll, is the day pigs will fly.

Some directors are simply unlucky with their films, receiving poor ratings even though the films aren't that bad, for example M. Night Shyamalan's Lady in the Water (...I liked it).

Other directors have a style that is somewhat alternative and doesn't attract the largest of audiences, for example Darren Aronofsky.

But I think it is safe to say that Uwe Boll is LITERALLY the worst director EVER. I turned off "In the Name of the King" about 15 minutes into the film. Alone in the Dark was possibly one of the worst films I'd ever seen, and don't even get me started about House of the Dead. I don't understand why successful Hollywood Actors and Actresses agree to do films with him...It's ridiculous. He should be banned from film sets.

well I have a lot of respect for him. He is one of the only directors in the world
in a positions to do the films, he wants to do and get them out in 1000´s of theaters worldwide. He makes 1-2 films a year.

If you listen to the creative screen writing podcast with him - about his film "Postal" you will find that he is pretty damn cool.

But hey... don't like the guy why don't you challenge him? - do a few rounds with him - (he did that before with a bunch of critics - where he hired a boxing arena and fought them all...:)

very few indie directors are able to raise 50mil. usd (or what ever in the name of the king cost)... imagine how many people have work because of him and his company... so hats off to Uwe!

What I've read is that the problem is with MGM? and an uncertain future on the projects at the moment? This is all 'news' speak, but it seemed that since this 3 year project has turned into 6, Del Toro has other projects that need to get done that he is working on and had to step away. Made sense to me.

Peter Jackson also said he is NOT going to fill the directing role and is looking for someone else, with the studio, to fill that role.

My favorite Del Toro work is 'The Orphanage'. What an amazingly well done movie.

To be honest, I'd be happy to direct it. Peter, if you're reading this, just PM me with the details.

I'll have to juggle a few things around, but I should be able to fit it in.

Speaking of juggling, I have to get back to Mr. Nolan about replacing Heath Ledger as The Joker...

I'm gonna have to swallow my words and say that I did find parts of "Postal" hilarious.

And you make a fair point about people getting work from his films...but that argument is fairly shaky.

I'll alter my statement: Most (not all) of the films he makes are terrible.

As long as it's not McG or Michael Bay. I think the producers will ensure it's great. How about Marc Forster? From Finding Neverland to James Bond the guy doesn't miss. But he's probably booked.

Aww come on...McG has great visual style. You can't deny that Terminator Salvation LOOKED good...he just needs someone to hone the story. I think McG and Jackson would make an interesting team...

But I do agree, no Michael Bay...

I don't know. "Quantum of Solace" wasn't very good, in my opinion. I haven't seen anything in Marc Forster's directorial style that would lead me to believe that he could do anything like "The Hobbit."

I am truly saddened by the news of Del Toro leaving the project.

I was shocked when I first heard that Jackson wasn't directing the film, but then I found out it was going to be Del Toro, and I thought that that was actually a good move, because, in my opinion, Del Toro was the only director in the world who I could actually expect to make a better "The Hobbit" than Peter Jackson.

Now I'm just hoping that Peter Jackson goes back to directing the project himself, because anybody else is going to be a crap-shoot.

I was looking forward to Del Toro doing the Hobbit. Oh well, without Jackson and Del Toro directing, there's only one other I would trust to do it in a way I would approve of.. Me! Hahaa...

Anyway, I hope they get it sorted. I don't understand what the hold up is. If they do it right, it will be highly profitable.

As long as they stay true to the story and don't add anything in I'll be happy. If they pull a lord of the rings I won't be happy, they took out my favorite parts (most of them... I'm a purist yes). I know unpopular view and no need to start this, but that is what I care about (but don't get me wrong I'll take em, at least I got to see it brought to life finally... well live action).

Most things look great these days for me it is about the adaptation of the novel to film more than the directors style. This kind of movie should dictate it's own style. The two movies worries me, I'm not sure where the break is I'd assume after the goblin caves, queer lodgings or part way through flies and spiders (to end with them in peril). though once the book is broken down the middle will be different than in the book, but seeing as I won't be writing the script seems like a little too much work for a writing exercise. My two movies beef has more to do with waiting a year to see the end, but I do worry they will add in some love story with Bilbo or some other character.

Mah I guess I just have to sit back and wait, I know I won't love it as much as the book but I will enjoy it for what it is like the rings. I just hope I'm wrong and they do the book to a T (condensed well) and just show us the epic scenes in full glory that have only existed in our minds. This is just my opinion but I prefer most novel adaptations that just turn the book into a movie and add nothing of their own. I feel at times writers try and put their mark on an adaptation and end up bringing it down in quality. Plus it's Tolkien you don't mess with his words......mah.

I know it's hard to adapt and that is normally the cause of changes, but I feel it just requires work to fit the original story into movie form, that is where you show your writing chops, not by adding in your own new material.( I have no writing credits let alone adaptations so perhaps I should....)

Oh yeah who should direct.... ah anyone who grew up on the hobbit and loves it, doesn't matter as much to me as who writes the script (which I think is done but I know nothing about, so I may be putting my foot in my mouth).

Just to be clear love Tolkien, love Jackson, love the rings as movies, it's just the hobbit and the rings were the first real books I read as a child and have loved and defended them ever since.

Any hobbit movie is better than no movie....

Stay passionate

I know Cuaron is a great director, but I don't really like his approach to fantasy. Lots of people loved Prisoner of Azkaban, but I hated it. I thought it was the worst book to film adaptation in the series.

I have no idea who could replace Del Toro as he seemed to fit the creative mold that Jackson shaped in LOTR.

My guess is that they'll break the two films at the point in which they enter Mirkwood Forest.

I think Cuaron could do it alright and he may just be the best choice right now based on who is out there with the right experience. In that regard, I think Chris Columbus could do it too -- he directed the first two Potter films. Cauron's Potter is a bit more gritty in some ways. I did not care for the book to film translations for Azkaban or the Goblet of Fire. I thought both made very questionable choices regarding some key story elements that were eliminated while condensing them.

Have to agree that Adamson would not be right. I have not cared for the Narnia films thus far, even though I always really liked the books. The films don't feel expansive or epic at all. They feel cramped and have that same greenscreen/sound-stage feel that Gavin mentions.

There's also Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass)... Just don't let him touch the story...

I'd be willing to drop everything I'm working on to come do it. ...Just sayin'

i too did not want to see anyone else direct but Peter Jackson. I though the reason he was not doing that in the first place was because the studio would not allow it after some sort of fallout they had following lord of the rings. It could be just some bs i picked up of wikipedia along the way but from memory he had obtained rights to the hobbit story, but the studio had rights to any sequels coming after lotr and the only way they were going to greenlight the project was if someone else was attached to direct. Del Toro seemed a stroke of genius to work around that situation, but now he is gone i hope we end up seeing Peter fill that role again because this is a film(s) i have waited a lifetime for and i want it to be awesome
