  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Guessing game...

I'm looking forward to see what, if anything, they produce for a run-n-gun microphone solution. Will there be an accessory shoe add-on where I can drop a shotgun mic without all kinds of wild handles on the thing?

You might want to look at WoodenCamera.com .
http://woodencamera.com/
They have a microphone shock mount on there for $25. Don't know if that's what you're looking for.

I'm on board with those guessing 2/3 and 4K.

There will be two flavors: fixed ($12K) and interchangeable ($15k) with the choice of PL or EOS mount for those that opt for the interchangeable route.

Then Jim will jump over Sony and Canon's CEOs and slam dunk a basketball for the win as time expires.
hopefully not 12k
6k and id bite
8k is pushing
12k then id have to wait until spring lol

Based on everything Jim, Jarred & Co. have said so far my guess would be for 4/5K S35mm interchangeable Scarlet with a zoom lens bundle.

Now it might seem like a lot to add for a sub $10,000 price tag but if you take the economy of scale, further sharing of manufacturing resources between product lines and rental houses/big players willingness to pay the premium for Epic-x/M's higher speed/res capabilities I can see the Scarlet being sold as a body for $5k-ish and a zoom lens/media/production bundle kit for $10k.

I dunno. We'll see. I fully expect nothing less than 4K and/or S35mm sensor size. The competition has woken up...

Red started out with a very aggressive intense R&D program. I don't think they have ever slacked off. There is no telling what kind of breakthroughs in sensor design they have achieved or how many different designs they have tested in the last 3 years. The electronics industry has been through nearly two Moore's law cycles in that time. There is certainly potential for significant cost/performance improvements.

I don't think you will see a fixed lens version with a sensor much larger than 2/3", maybe QHD or 4k at super 16mm size, but the size weight and cost of optics to cover an S35 sensor with suitable range and speed would be impractical for a fixed lens camera.

Red 1 originally sold for $17500. It seems likely that Red could produce a camera with that level of performance in the compact Scarlet modular form factor with state of the art DR and sensitivity and new features like HDRx and a bare brain price less than half that today. But it would likely not be the 30mm x 15mm 5k Epic sized sensor. It might be 4k and somewhere in the size range between 4/3 and APSC. I'm thinking like 20mm x10mm 4/3" size at 4k but not 4/3 format, shooting 2k at 2/3" sized format.

Electronic Canon and Nikon lens mount options and possibly a first generation model of Red's own electronic lenses and mount in a practical zoom as well as PL mount, perhaps B4 and C mount too.

Something like that would be a really sweet camera that would cover a lot of bases. It might eliminate the need for Epic-S and simplify Red's model line to two basic brains sharing the same range of modular accessories. More likely to generate the sales volume to justify a lower base price in the under $10k consumer range. Better suited to DSMC stills use. Throw in a next gen Dragon sensor and it truly could be an amazing camera.

Pure speculation, but hey as long as we are guessing.:thumbup1:

If this were the case - put me down for two!

I'm pretty stoked about what has already been hinted at (even at earlier specs the Scarlet is a steal at under $10K) but I'm hoping that it will have a few features that haven't been so talked about recently - most are software based and could be added later in updates.

1. Internal ND filter - as much as I see the need of a Matt Box, a Run-n-Gun Application adding extra to the front of the camera isn't so hot - maybe just a Lend Hood for Scarlet Fixed.

2. Wider FPS options. 120fps is great, 180fps in burst is wow, with luck if I can get faster I'll take it (even if it does reduce the total area of the chip used). I will also take slower frames per second down to a bulb setting. It is a DSMC camera so it should be usable to take pictures or longer exposures as well (think time-lapse). Better yet, a time lapse feature, should be mainly programming in the firmware to give us this and I'm sure many will use it.

3. A small built in mic, extremely basic (maybe even mono) that will record sound for the camera so that we can sync footage with sound. It also allows for ADR later if we flub a connection between the Mic and the Camera (sometime sound isn't clean).

4. For the Cinematic Version (if there are versions) a smart Canon/Nikon mounting option would be grand (and you can pick which one you want when you order as some of us will have no use of mini-PL mount), given Nikon's newly released mirrorless cameras perhaps that route? That said Red Primes would also be great to announce as well, I just think all the 5D shooters who will upgrade have all that nice L series Canon glass they will want to use, and I have a bunch of Nikon Glass I wouldn't mind using if Scarlet Fixed is off the table (or Cinematic is a much better value for my needs).

5. A 3D bundle or simple method of hooking up the cameras. Does Scarlet's form factor allow for this? For 3D the second Scarlet needs only to be the body or body/lens so there is a savings in terms of equipment to have 3D bundle. With this it would be nice if the dual scarlets actual talk with each other and compare the footage they are reading to ensure that they are both in focus at the same time, again with the touch focus etc. A 3D monitor - Red Style would be kind of cool too.

I'm also hoping that there will be enough batteries and memory cards to go around. And if there are package deals for those who want 64, 128, etc cards or extra batteries (I'm thinking a pack of 4 would be nice) as many, like me, will be first time Red owners and missing a memory card or battery or docking station basically puts us out of commission.

I could be wrong but a lot of people seem to be convinced that the camera will become S35 as 2/3" isn't good enough, but it is simply a whole different market. Personally I hope they release the fixed 2/3" - I'm a huge fan of 16mm aesthetic - and after all of the R&D into the fixed, the prototypes etc, I don't think that would all be discarded. But I guess some changes might depend on the complexity of the lens issue.

And with mentions to the Canon announcement and "Red has to deliver 4k S35mm" - I disagree. The Epic has already taken over Hollywood, by putting out a 2/3" or 16mm Fixed or interchangeable Scarlet with prices close to what have already been stated, they could pretty much clean up most of the entire market, with the 2/3" for Doc/ENG/TV or films that want the 16mm aesthetic, then the Epic for the 35mm...

But who knows...

We have already seen the pic of the Test racks full of fixed 2/3 Scarlets so I feel that model will be included in the announcement on the 3rd. (Unless specs released were a false lead?)

The only thing I am unsure about is whether RED have been able to wave their magic wands and have discovered a viable modification to the Scarlet frame resulting in a second model, utilizing technology already on hand. My guess is the MX Sensor from the beloved Red One.

The last option of course is the brain only with the simultaneous release of the mini primes, making 3 models in total.

Its so hard to say and knowing RED we may all be wrong lol! Either way its exciting as hell and I am loving the ride!

I have another prediction for you:
Imagine a Scarlet the size of a GoPro (or just a little larger). That would be something...
Sports fans will go nuts!!

Whatever is announced it will be the best thing out there under 10K, mark my words...

is it just me or do a lot of these guesses sound like an EPIC? hey might have a s35 sensor but won't have 120fps for under 10k (I think) and if you remove the fixed lens then you no longer have the internal filter wheel (once again I think... doesn't seem to be room in the standard body)

A 4/3 sensor would be amazing, though not the same as 2/3's but it would be great, but we still run into the issues of frame rates filter wheel and fixed lens... which may not in fact be issues for some.

we must all remember the epic(or a Red One), it's spec's, and how much it costs, then take that and compare it to the dream specs of your ideal scarlet... I don't imagine scarlet being nearly an epic and come in a kit fully ready to shoot for under 10k.... not saying i wouldn't love it I just doubt it.

Though it is fun to speculate remember not to expect anything cause that could lead to being let down... I have a few hopes but will take anything under 10k... or near it, from Red

That's a thought. Frankenstein all the exchanged R1s' MX sensors and put em' in the Scarlets!

For what I do, the fixed lens Scarlet was just about perfect, it was like it was designed with my business in mind... I couldn't believe my luck.

I hope it doesn't change too much. I know RED and movies go hand in hand, but i'm sure not all of us on here are film makers by trade.

2/3", fixed lens, good DR, raw, 120fps... ticked every box I ever wanted!

ps - if it is scrapped, maybe they can sell me Ted's fixed for $15k ;-)

Just wait a see. If Jim said that if Scarlet dissapoints, he will retire... He and Scarlet will not dissapoint me.
Only I can dissapoint him by not buying the camera. It all depends on the price. But things can change. We all know that...

If Scarlet disappoints... I'll retire.

Jim

If I were Jim I wouldn't be worried about the future sales of the Red One in releasing and designing new cameras. The Red One was released in 2007. Imagine if all companies were concerned about future sales of such dated products. Panasonic released the hpx-170 for $7,000 in 2007. Look at them, they're certainly not worried about the AF-100, at $5,000, stealing sales from their hpx-170 line nearly 4 years after the camera's been released. The Red One will be history, and while still a very capable camera, I see Red as redefining the marketplace whenever they can. Pushing for 4K acquisition and distribution, creating a 4K camera in 2007 at an affordable price point, releasing a 5K camera when most think 1080p is sufficient.

I think we'll have a pleasant surprise in store for the scarlet on Nov, 3rd. I think Jim will have satisfied a large portion of the market by releasing a 4K S35 scarlet while still preserving sales for the Epic-X by keeping some of the features reduced. Remember the specs, 5K, 120fps, insanely low compression levels. These features are worth the price tag in the Epic-X.

I think this is why the announcement is coinciding with Canon's announcement. Because while Canon will be proud to announce a 4K cinema camera ready for ''Hollywood'' at some outrageous pricing structure, Red will have the same feature specs in a camera (4K S35) for a fraction of that. Exactly as 4K was brought to a completely different market in 2007 with the release of the Red One, which was a fraction of the price of the only other 4K capable camera at that time, the Dalsa Origin.

It might end up somewhere along these lines. We heard from Jim that ideas from the Scarlet beginning were changed/improved. Let's look at what could be considered an improvement:
- 3K to 4K obviously
- 2/3 to S35 - lot of competition releases have gone to S35
- removing the fixed lens - this gives more flexibilty in lens choice. If sensor has really changed to S35 it is just not practical to make a lens with focal lengths that were planned for 2/3 sensor. We get canon mount option to ... fill in the obvious.

I feel Scarlet will end up with at least one or all of the changes listed.
I doubt the 120 fps at windowed 3K will go away - this would be a downgrade of the initial spec and it just doesn't seems to be in line with the spirit of RED.

The only thing that leaves me scratching my head is RED One price&spec compared to Scarlet price&spec. This leads me to doubt some things I wrote above :-)
Ohh the sweet expectation....

The only problems with changing the Scarlet to 4K S35 are that (1) Red already had an S35 5K Scarlet, which was scrapped in favor of the Epic-S, and (2) developing a new sensor might be more expensive than using the existing, relatively mature 5K sensor and delay release of the camera. But Jim Jannard's posts certainly do support the theory that Scarlet is now S35, or at least substantially larger than 2/3-inch.
