  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group purchase of Arri Matteboxes

3 stage vs 2 stage

3 stage vs 2 stage

Guys some of you are questioning the price of the 3 stage. You are seeing a $700 increase where we found a $270 increase from another vendor early in the process.

All is well. With Abel, the side flags ($505) are INCLUDED with the three stage. So when you back out that price, we're looking at a net increase of $200 for the 3 stage and not $700.

It's all good.

Did everyone get in that wanted too?

Maybe a dumb question, but do we need the Arri Connecting ring (AR-338568)? That adds $300 to the order.

Also, if I get a 3-stage, is it common for one tray to be 5.65x5.65 and the other two to be 4x5.65 + 5x5 combos? I am getting just 4x5.65 size filters for now.

Edit: Steve sent me a quote with everything but the kitchen sink, so I am trying to figure out what I DON'T need.

Hi thinkbug

it is a good thing that in the three tray one of the trays ist 5.56. The first trays are for the NDs. There you can go 4x5.56. On a sunny day you will put 2 NDs into the MB. The third tray is for the grad filters. This one is better to be bigger so you can move your grads around to adjust them to the sky. The pola goes into the roundtray.
So there you have it. On a killer sunny day in the mountains you put 2 NDs one grad for the skies and one pola into the mattebox.

The MB-20II is the killer MB. I also have one on order.
I hope that could help.
Cheers

Yes, it does help, thanks! Do you know about the connecting ring?

The connecting rings depend on your lens diameters.
Check your lenses from where they start. Or what kinda lenses you would like to use in the future.
The nice thing about the MB-20 is that your are future proofed. What ever lens you may use in the future the MB-20 will take it. Almost any lens. With a few eceptions.

Now I get it. Connection rings are basically adapter rings. So if I want to use an SLR lens with a 80mm front diameter, then I need a ring that goes down to that size, right? 138-114 won't cut it. And if I have lenses as large as 138mm and as small as 80mm, I may need two rings at $300 a pop!

Exactly, most canon lenses have a 77mm diameter.
So the Arri 80mm is a bit to wide. That's not so bad. You can close the gape with tape or other handy stuff.

Get some of the rings. I would say that 110, 104, 95, 80 covers most Zeiss and Cooke primes. If you have any other requirements get that as well.

BUT DON'T FORGET that you can cover up with a lens donut as well. It's basically a round mouse mat with a hole in the middle that you cover the "gaps" with. Just do a search on google and you'll see what it is.

If your planning to use the MB with any B4 zooms, get the 95 & 85mm which covers most ENG standards and wides.

Looks like the RED zoom is 114mm, so with zeiss standard primes and/or stepped up SLRs (80mm OD), I'd need both the 138-114 and the 100-80 (as a step down from the 138-100 which is included free).

If they threw in the 138-114 for free instead of 138-100, then I could just get the 114-80 connection ring and save $300.

(unless I'm missing something)

Sexy is one thing and operational is another. I'd hate to have to wait and be displeased. Not saying that I will but you can't see render pix and say this is it!

Yeah it's damn sexy. If I knew it is as good as the cam I would stop the ARRi deal. But I guess it will take about 4-5 month till the thing is in stock.

But it looks great. I want one too.

Cheers

I am very happy about the Arri deal, The Arri equipment will last for a very, very long time, and for any occasion when I am offering my equipment for rental and/or use with other professionals, the Arri gear is what they know - what they want - what they demand!

Arri MB/FF lasts for decades, they are true and tested and will pay back every penny.

I am sure RED will deliver a MB that is affordable and functional, but the render they posted today reminded me a bit of the first camera renders we saw - concept, with some development ahead of it.

As with all things, there is very seldom ONE choice for anything. The MB-20 will be our workhorse, but perhaps someday, the RED mattebox may be larger enough to serve for lenses larger than 138mm.

Bottom line, that was a render, and not a photo.. Which tells me the thing is a ways off. I STARTED the group buy with ARRI because I needed something when the camera came out..

That reason still holds true today.. The mattebox looks good, but it's not out, and I doubt it will be in the next couple months.

And, as those of you who have put in orders know, there are a hell of a lot of nessesary parts.
