  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GROUP BUY - Tilta Nucleus-M Wireless Follow Focus

Phil, I may be a bit envious!

Of course I am number 235 so I will be patient
Peter, I have a question regarding this purchase by a DP:
Why would a DP buy a remote focus kit?
Do you pull your own focus on jobs that require remote focus?
Do you buy it for your AC? Do you leave the tool choice to the AC or do you hire them and supply your own full kit?
I'm curious how this works with you as a DP because traditionally DPs hadn't much to do with focus puller tools...
I'm genuinely interested how the dynamics have changed with the digital /affordable equipment market emerging....

As a DP myself, we buy WFF's for our AC's, but more importantly, to have consistency in gear on jobs.

so the ACs don't mind or care what tools they use?
I thought they all had their favorite kit that they are intimately familiar with and can operate it with their eyes closed so to speak so during the shot all they need to do is focus (no pun intended haha) on getting subject in focus .After all it's their craft and name on the line.... Or the industry has grown so much that that aspect is not so important anymore?

There is no "they all had" and there isn't just one answer. The industry is rather diverse and DP even who works regularly with the same ACs might own the gear to rent to a particular production, or rent it on the side and pull it in as needed. In that case an AC who worked regularly, lets say an episodic series, is going to be rather familiar with whatever is being used for 3-9 months. In fact, I dare say, it's pretty common for DPs to bring "everything to the party" in many cases. I've met a great deal of ACs who literally have nothing in their kit outside of basic cleaning supplies and tape. I've also met ACs who have 3 or more displays, FF units, full on slate setups, timecode, etc.... There just isn't "one way" these days.

I know several people in this group buy who just are renting this kit out straight away or even using it as a backup to their "main whip" as they are in the price range suitable for that. Some people don't even use fiz setups that often, but want one when it's called for. A great deal of people are often on the gimbal or easyrig these days and this falls a lot into that operator range as something that "makes sense for that kit".

There's a great deal of wonderful ACs and Pullers out there who are battle tested and ninja-level in their skillset, but I will say safely that there is more of "every other possibility" at this point out there. It depends on what side of things you're working on, depends on budget levels, depends on the project, just depends.

As for myself, I'm actually mostly on a regular old sits on my 19mm rods and physically interacts mechanical follow focus, got 3 of those now all good quality kit. And even I fall in the rare club as I'm mostly operating and pulling on shoots when I can. Yet for some silly reason I shortly will own 3 full fiz kits. Maybe I'll dump one of them perhaps, but I certainly need them when on a crane, jib, car rig, etc.....

So my answer could be a long one but on certain shows such as Transformers, I have my own unit that I direct and shoot. On some days I might have a crew of 50 people and on other days it is just me and an AD. So I have my own kit outfitted like Bay's Red cameras and not having a remote focus setup can hurt me. Often I just have my 2 Pelican cases and some Gold batteries in my backpack and a set of PV C series anamorphics. Once Bay came to my set to operate and asked why I didn't have a Preston on my camera. I said I couldn't afford to buy one.
He said that "we" should get me one. Then in a rare moment he smiled and laughed and said "But we aren't buying one for you Pete!"

Oh ... I just saw them released Nucleus-M II

https://tilta.com/shop/nucleus-i-wireless-lens-control-system-wlc-t01/

State of the art wireless follow focus system with fast response, low-noise, and high-torque motors. Modular-designed hand unit and MDR can be updated via WiFi through the TILTA mobile APP allowing for control of two or three motors.

Seems that if we want to have high torque motors, we have to pick Nucleus II

Thank you Gentlemen, that explains a lot. Much appreciated ;-)

As far as I understand that one has been around for a while. Has a separate MDR, larger motors, different controller and a much larger price tag. Still pretty low priced considering other offerings out there, but the Nucleus series has been around before the Nucleus-M

My personal experience, I let the AC pic what he or she wants to pull focus on. My best guy pulls "backwards" from most people and so he often prefers a bartech over a preston because he's more use to it. Wireless FF used to be a specialty item for remote heads and steadicam. Now it's on 99% of jobs I do.

Hummm.. Can someone please explain following,

According to our final GB list (After all the drama) I am 89 (even today). However, Tilta is telling me I am #100 on their list....

Some people ordered more than one unit.

Some people ordered more than one unit.

Well.... I agreed, but whoever ordered two units, they have 2 numbers. For example, take a look at the #9& #10, #26 & #27, #45 & #46 so....on
something is not right...
