OK, I have my monitor. I love it.

I'm putting it around my neck with a wireless video tap to be the most awesome director's monitor ever.

Anyone have suggestions on bags / cases for that purpose?

Not sure whether I should get one of those big cage things, or if I can just have it on a monitor bag slung over my shoulder...

I love this W00den Camera's monitor mount: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...l7mgsyp67gaAkiO8P8HAQ&is=REG&m=Y&A=details&Q=

So I've had mine for a bit, I turn the backlight all the way down and contrast down to 30, this seems to give me the most accurate display. Otherwise blacks are a bit lifted and highlights appear blown when they are not. But at default settings it's a bright clear monitor for outside etc.

LOVE THE 3d LUTS, I'm rethinking my whole rig now, Possibly ditching the touchscreen, maybe. This is the feature I covet most about weapon, it would be so nice if epic dragon could do them internally. But this is a great interim solution.

It works great in a WC cage ... although I wish there was a 1/4-20 thread on top of the 702 for that peace of mind.

Thanks to Chris for organizing this GB ... and thanks to SmallHD for the deal and the speedy shipping.

SMALLHD are an outstanding company, they stand behind their products and are more than fair with returns and repairs, I've been using them since day one. I'm glad to see they are getting business from professionals. They are the best equipment manufacturer I have worked with.

I have always believed this as well, and I have been a customer since the very first monitor they offered when they were at NAB many years back.

Now, however, my 502 monitor has an issue that is obviously a design flaw(*), and they say the only recourse is to send it back at my own expense and they will repair it. No cross shipping of a working unit to keep me in business, no chance they will cover my shipping, no replacement - repair only.

This is a huge attitude change from my last 6 years of dealing with SmallHD and I honestly hope it is an exception.

(*) - the SDI connections on the SmallHD 502 monitor are only soldered onto the circuit board. They have no physical connection to the monitor housing to give them the strength needed in a professional environment. My SDI input broke off after less than 30 days of using my monitor, and I can see that it was only soldered on 2 of the 4 solder points available. They have fixed this flaw in the design of the 702 by encircling the SDI connections in a screwed-down metal plate.

I purchased and received my 702 about a week ago, completely forgot that Chris was setting up a group buy. DOH! I will say it is great looking display, but I am having a similar issue as Jake. The shadows are too lifted to be accurate for interior shooting situations. I also have my backlight turned down all the way and contrast reduced a bit. The brightness slider under the calibration menu breaks the signal and posterizes/bands the shadows as soon as you go from the default 50 setting to 49 or lower. Turning the backlight all the way down gets it close, but chances are it is still going to fool more than a few people into choking the shadows in interior set lit applications.

I have been in communication with SmallHD about this, so we will see what they have to say come Monday.

Here's some thoughts and ideas from a PM with Jake Wilganowski that we wanted to get in a thread: "Hey! Yep one click down on the brightness totally breaks the signal. I'm guessing the best way is to load a 3d calibration lut. But to do that you have to have the reader and software. I bet someone could do one and it would work pretty well for everyone's display, although there will be variances. Did small hd suggest this to you? I wonder if they have one already. It makes sense they wouldn't want to ship with it calibrated because they want it to hit you in the face with brightness/contrast when you turn it on. I think we should post these comments in the thread as everyone will be talking about it soon."

i guess it would be nice to be able to setup different calibration profiles that you can switch btwn, on the 502 i toggle btwn a raw(whats coming from camera) and a corrected one to see the worst scenerio. but it would be nice to have a smallhd "exterior" setting with full brightness and an interior setting"with toned down brightness.
let me know what they say or you guys find out.
thanks!

I bet since a lot of these will be delivered soon SOMEBODY can run a calibration and give us a .cube lut we can load into the calibration settings area. Pretty please :)
