  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy: Optitron2 - Wireless remote for Canon/Nikon glass

I'm not familiar with the app but they won't get in each others way since we use proprietary protocol for low latency lens control and the app uses WiFi.
It's also unlikely that the calibration will get somehow thrown off if you won't use the focus feature of the app... if that makes sense?...

I am using them both and it works fine.

But you cannot use Optitron with the HotLink as they both need access to the CTRL port.

As we're building a device which sits on the CTRL port ourselves, and want to interact with both Foolcontrol and Movie-slate (8-beta which records metadata from the RED), we have a solution (in-house) where both apps work with the camera at the same time through the same network created by our devices.

It is also not a problem to use them together, but if you adjust focus with the Foolcontrol... Haven't check if that messes up calibration. Would guess it does, because I don't think the Optitron sends data when not in motion.

I cannot really see why/how you would use that part of the protocol concurrently on two devices, though. It makes sense to edit camera settings with fool control, set focus with optitron and record the action from both Optitron and fool control in Movieslate.

As to the hyperfast protocol... the CTRL port has a fixed baud-rate. Actually we had to slow down the input from the Movie-slate to conform to that standard. Foolcontrol behaved correctly. There are good reasons to go for the ctrl port, but I doubt Jacek has made a "tunnel" in the protocol to send the info any different than the description requires... :)

There is a bit of overhead on when going through TCP/IP (network), which makes it a possibly jittery place to connect a focusing device.
But dataspeed is probably not one of those reasons :)

In shotrt:
Yes it works

I do it all the time, and these three devices complement eachother in function and where they fit in on a set.

Unfortunately Optitron doesn't play in tandem with the tools we are making for this very reason, but if Jacek down the line would allow the Optitron to connect and speak RCP through "other" wireless devices than his own, that would remedy that.

So to me the Optitron is more of a great "self use" tool, than something I can integrate into the post-workflows we're working on. Which is a pitty in some ways.

Still love to use it for "normal" scenarios.

Keep us in the loop on that Brian. Looks promising.

Yes that's correct.
For Sony and ARRI you need OptiTek Canon adapters.
The nice thing about that setup is that the power is drawn from the camera front so no power cable is necessary. you cut one cord and the need fo one power tap with ARRI And Sony PWM cameras
OptiTron2 is also compatible with Canon, BMD, Panasonic cameras via the Lanc ports- we are in process of implementing the LANC software at this time.
Last, but not least- OptiTron2 will also become traditional wireless FF for PL lenses via external motors with the up coming MDR box....
Is this for real? I would love to have fine iris control on Otus ze lenses plus motor follow focus. When will this be avalable?
Edit. Seriously if you can pull off remote stop/start,small increment zeiss ze series iris control and fine, quiet motor follow focus it will be fantastic. I'll be in for 3.

It's great if the Optitron can controll external motors, too.

As mentioned, to work it nto the workflows I work on, it needs to play nice with "other" units working on the RCP protocol, too.
But I'll keep on testing.

I did not really mean it that way.
If you need external motor controllers there is a plethora of these starting from very reasonable pricing.
Iris control/start/stop -that's a available in an app.
OPtiTron2 is not that- it is about integrated precise lens control- mainly focus on electronic lenses..That's what makes us unique and outstanding.
I don't know how else I can emphasize it...;-)

No kidding. Just love this thing!

That's right Stephen,
OptiTron2 is not the answer to everything RED, but it is THE answer to focusing electronic lenses- Canon and Nikon in case of Red...;-)

But will it make toast?

:-)

Gotta Have It

Gotta Have It

I have the Optitron 2 for my Epic Dragon. I also had the Birger for my Red One. The Optitron 2 is everything the Birger was supposed to be and way more. Its silky smooth, accurate and reliable. If you shoot with Canon (my case) or Nikon lenses you're just screwing yourself if you don't have the Optitron2. When I bought mine I paid full retail, but I would have paid double that. :yesnod:

Yup. It is surprisingly good!

Same boat here, Mr. Crabtree. It's a winner for sure.

Great!

Soon we will be releasing the "Red feature set" firmware- some final "try to crash it" testing going on now but so far it has been very stable.
All we need now is some love on Reduser ;-).....

Can't wait to get that new release!
