  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy: K-FLECT lighting System

I'll investigate and report back on Monday.

Perhaps there could be an extension but I also would not want to offend anyone who honored the original deadlines.

Thoughts on this are welcomed.

Hi Folks Quick update,

This group buy is now closed but we are looking at opening another limited group buy perhaps in late October.

A few tips for those of you who have ordered.

-Sabine is working through all of the orders in the order they have arrived.

-There is a slight delay on shipping some items as the KFlect bags (produced in France) did not ship to them ahead of the August 15th holiday (for those of you outside Europe you need to understand that the country literally pretty much shuts down the last two weeks of August, its the same in Italy, for summer holidays)

-On Payments- Kflect does not require any advanced payment, they will even take payment after your order ships. They want to ensure you are happy with the product. It's their policy.

The overall message is sit tight, every order is being processed and ready to ship and great care will be taken to get each and every one of you a top notch product.

I received my (minimal) order! Nice company to deal with, and a particularly nice product. I'm thinking of shooting some comparison tests with other reflectors. Is anybody else already doing this?

Sean,

make sure you share some stuff with us. Not sure who else is doing this.

Looking forward to Bob’s extensive review too. Just a few notes about my experience setting up a super minimal K-Flect set. Not sure if any of this information can be useful, but I want to express my happiness with the panels.

I’m in for only about $350 worth of panels:

30x30 #2, #9

10x10 #2, #6, #9, #15

I fabricated my own glass mirror tiles from Home Depot ($10 for 6), with corrugated plastic backing and a centered square of 16ga. sheet metal for the magnet mount, all squeezed together with Gorilla glue. Instead of buying any of K-Flect’s $50 magnet mounts, I used some $3 magnets from Harbor Frieght (rated at 65lbs.) and screwed 5/8” pins (Avenger E300 $6.50 each at B&H) into their center holes. They work great and will be useful in other grip situations. I started using my Matthews MiniGrip pieces to mount and adjust the panels, so some of the magnets got removed from their 5/8” pins and screwed directly to the threaded ends of the 1/4” mini-grip rods. This is solution is solid for both the 10x10s and 30x30s, as the panels are very lightweight.

I don’t recommend making glass mirror panels if you can afford K-Flects. Theirs will not shatter if dropped. But I didn’t want to spend a lot of money before checking out these panels.

I will leave comparisons of light quality to the people who actually bought more than a few different panels. But what I have, I already love and know I will use. In a basic side-by-side, The #15 is considerably brighter than a #9. It has a much broader speckling whereas the #9 light looks more granular.

The #9 appears on its surface to match Rosco #273 soft silver reflective material. But side by side, the light from a #9 is 1 full stop brighter. The Silver RoadRags 18x24” Mattflector gives about the same brightness as the #9, but with much finer speckling texture and less focus. And the K-Flect shouldn’t blow around in the wind nearly as badly as RoadRags.

After testing them out for an hour with a sunny window as source, I had to remind myself they didn’t need to be unplugged and cooled down. The re-directing of one powered source to act as many has serious potential. I was skeptical that all the different panel types would be useful, but the idea of using different panels to modify the light rather than flags, silks, gels, snoots, doors… is fantastic. It’s easy to see how well this can work. I want more...

Sean,

thanks so much for posting. It's so important to have a few and actually start shaping and directing light with them, as your post reflects so eloquently. They really are the kind of thing you don't know you want until you figure out how simple and effective they are.

thanks again for posting.

I'm really intrigued by these. I wish that I could rent a kit for a weekend somewhere. I'm looking forward to seeing more and reading Bob's review.

Table top arrived,
just by playing with the sun to see the caracteristic of each of the 17 10X10 panels, I already like the content of my portable case.
For sure this one will go with me in my next trip to Australia.
Thanks David to nail this Austrian company.

Cool,

Great news! The more you have them the more they inspire...

Received my DoP starter kit on Saturday. The additional items I asked for were not in the package, though, but not on the invoice either. I'll send a mail to KFLECT tomorrow to find out if they'll be delivered later or if they simply forgot I ordered them. ;-)
