Hey Guys,

I have just had a mini kit of K-Flect reflectors in the studio for some testing. I am pretty amazed at these little panels. All I can say it that this reflector kit, with it's simple 10cm x10cm reflectors blew my mind. It literally turned one light into 17 potential lights and creative choices. To be honest I thought a little 10x10 reflector would be kinda useless except for tabletop but I was actually very surprised at how handy these things are, especially with their magnetic mini-grip system.

This works with your existing lighting, so you do not need their "parabeam" to make it work. I could use a 1K light and five reflectors to turn it into a 5light setup. The whole system was set up by a cinematographer, so it's all created with on set usage in mind. The sizes range from 10x10cm to 100x100, but I think I could easily light an interview with the 10x10's if you choose the right combo.

For the cost of one fixture, you kinda add 17 possibilities to your lighting setups.

Crazy!

I am considering setting up a group buy for this, but I would like to gauge interest first. When you wrap your head around lighting this way, it's pretty cool.
If anyone has any questions, just let me know.

Here is the pricing info and details for this group buy.

Initially I asked Frederic if he might put together special pricing for the tabletop kit so that Redusers could get a sense of the system and not have to break the bank to get a nice kit together.

I'm surprised at what he has come back with:

20% off the price of the K-Box tabletop kit
regular 685€ discounted price is 548€
That includes 17 10cmx10cm reflector panels and grip equipment!

but beyond that he has included a 20% discount on over 240 items
And 20% off five different kits including: (that's 20%off the already discounted kit pricing)

XL starter kit
DOP starter kit
Mini starter kit
TT starter kit
K-box TT kit

plus 240 mix and match items.

all 20% off.

Here is how it will work.

-Email il me at my email address which you can find in my user profile.
-subject line — Group Buy: K-FLECT lighting System
-I will email you a configuration spreadsheet with all the pricing listed along with a unique password.
-You order directly from K-Flect and they will prepare and ship your order worldwide.
-The Reduser order offer expires on August 10th, 2014 one password per customer.

Check back here on this thread for configuration ideas and Q&A between now and then.

I think it's a very generous offer as people can buy kit or individual pieces, all at a 20% discount! a great way to get familiar with the system or save on multiple pieces if you already used the system.

As a tip, everyone will want to order number 1, 2 and 9 in 10x20 or 30x30 without blinking.

I could be VERY interested in this!!! Thank David!!

I hope Italy is treating you well my friend. :)

I am still waiting on some budget numbers but the little kit I tested with 17 panels and four grip stands in a hard case was about <680€

Here is a super quick example where I turned one light into four just by bending it with various reflectors. They can be very specialized. I would have had to do this dedo's and flagging, etc, but the little 3 inch by 3 inch panels (like two packs of cigarettes put together to make a square) lets you spot or flood depending on the panel you choose.

So I had an overall, a spot in the corner, an effect going across the book and another panel hitting the background a bit. Lots of fun to play with.

Very cool!

Hey Mark, how are things in Chicago land? Hope all is well.

Been trying to pinch my pennies saving for an ARRI M18 kit, but I am interested in a group buy as will.

OK,

Here is an interview type example. I set the panels up for the first shot and then just started mix and matching to create different looks. I literally created these setups in about 2 minutes just by detaching one panel and adding a different one, etc. So once you are reflecting onto the scene, you can literally just swap out these little panels in like 1 second because they are magnetic to the grip stands.

Leica 50mm on dragon at 500ISO

So if you had a client there you could swap out about ten looks in about literally 3 minutes without relighting!

Remember - only one light for this scene.

Nuts.

Really great out-of-the-box thinking. What are the costs of the K-sources?

Will look into it. You can even add them to a regular joker bug 800. Doing the reflector makes the single light source brighter and I think more than 10 times more efficient. 3000 lumens becomes like 51000 lumens.

Its brilliant. Take the same light source and by adding their reflector (they make one for the actual light source) you seriously multiply the output power. The you take that and bounce it and shape it with various reflectors. Big savings in generators, etc.

Im in.

Check in this old video where they use a single source to light cafe scenes and even a very complex night scene with a single source mounted on a boom with many reflectors. It's in German but I love the lighting design concept of treating everything as a single source with all other light reflected like the sun.

K-flect might be the new name or something. From a concept and budget standpoint it is just too cool. Plus in many cases a lot cleaner set as you can just place these panels where you need them without running cable or taking up too much space.

I can certainly see many uses for this, especially in available light and run & gun limited budget shoots, but I don't see how a small panel can truly replicate a large area source for soft lighting. Eg, the 10x10cm panel is always going to be a small source on a drama set even if the falloff is soft. And even a 100x100cm panel won't look the same as a 20x20ft ultra bounce.
