Group Buy - Hexolux LED Spotlights

Hi Andy,

In cinematography and photography light is typically measured in f-stops. One f-stop more is twice as much light. So in the case of creating teams, the second light doubles the output and increases the light by one f-stop. If you add a third light to that team of two, it is going to increase the total light another 50% or by half an f-stop.

The team of 3 lights is comparable to a 575W HMI, so it is a dramatic increase in throw, and can compete with the sun similar to how a 575W HMI does. The nature of the lens design and the close proximity of the hexagon shaped lenses reduces the expected multi-shadow to make the light and shadow very pleasing.

Please let me know if you have questions,

Thanks,
Pete

Group Buy Part 2

Group Buy Part 2

Hey Zeb & Pete

Any chance to do a second group buy? I missed the first one as I was filming. I'd definitely be interested in 1-2 of the group buy packages at 4k each.

Reading through the whole post, there seems to be a number of people interested in a second group buy.

Any ideas?

Thanks again to Pete for innovating so beautifully on these lights.

Also, I talked to Hexolux about the NAB 4K light. It will be a couple months before release since they are incorporating the suggestions they collected at NAB into the final product. We will be having a GB on that when it is available.

All orders from this GB will be shipped out by this coming Monday. I am satisfied with Hexolux's product and service preformance so will continue with helping them to market through RU.

Zeb - Just as a benchmark, what would the current Hexolux lights be considered in comparison to this new "4K." I am just trying to judge how much brighter they would be.

Thanks.

What form is the 4K light in? Is it a spotlight/fresnel or more of a panel?

The "4K" is 4x the current LED engines packed tight with little reflectors. Bright but not 4K in output I don't believe. Like Bob says -square form factor. Probably 16" LxW by 5" deep

soft box

soft box

Pete,

Just received the kit and it looks great. I'm hoping to use it on an outdoor shoot next week. Two questions:
  1. How does the soft box close/fold? I see the two buttons but they seem very tight -- should I force them? I assume they slide towards the fixed buttons.
  2. Is there any danger in sliding the Illuminator too far forward (towards the fresnel)? I assume the stops in the housing keep it from going further than it safely should.
Thank you!

Hi Med,

1. Yes, if you squeeze those two buttons together, it releases the soft box. You can squeeze hard without any risk of breaking it. It gets easier, its just new. Also, you can relieve the tension on the buttons by putting the soft box face down, diffusion on the ground, and push down on the black metal ring while squeezing the buttons.

2. No danger, the stops in the housing will stop the Illuminator. The Illuminator is allowed to touch the lens, so you get maximum wide angle, but it will not go forward enough to hurt the lens. For shipping I like to leave a little space so they do not rub each other.

Just got my pkg and man this was a good choice.Ill try to do a couple of setup even if its in the living room just to show what they can do. But I have to say just out of the box they are exceeding my expectations and thats just turning them on and doing a quick check around my house with full sun out side and a wall of windows..Ill do the test before I say more.Heres a quick look at a camera test using them for slow-motion.

Pete, or anyone else -

Can anyone post pics of how the barn doors can be held in place even if the light is inverted? the piece that slides in and out on the top, doesn't seem to be either oriented right or I'm doing something wrong.

Thanks!
Nikhil

Why would you invert it?

Just checked - should not be an issue - the tab slides out beyond the ring to capture it

Hi Nikhil,

Slide that top tab out as far as you like, to retain the doors, then tighten the top knob to hold the tab.
Also, you can unscrew the pivot bolt that holds the lens to the yoke, and turn the lens around and use the same mounting point on the other side of the lens. This way you do not need to invert the lens.
There are holes in the base of the yoke and the barn doors for safety cables to attach.
The tabs that hold the barn doors should both face up. The bottom one faces up to catch the barn door rim. The top one faces up so it is easy to grab and slide in and out.

Please let me know if this makes sense.

Thanks,
Pete

Thanks Pete! Very helpful and comprehensive. I guess we were thrown by how it works with Arri lights where the top tab points downward and holds the barn doors in place.

Any chance this could be added to your instructions set on the site? Both as HTML and in a PDF document? I had this light used on a production today and interacting with some of the crew, I realized that given this light was new to them, it'd have been nice to have this info available easily, along with ideally a short video that demonstrates all of these details.
