  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GROUP BUY: Cinegears Wireless Follow Focus Christmas Special!

Ok guys! Been playing with the finger wheel now for a few days.
[...]
A group buy for this will be starting possibly tomorrow (
Wednesday). It will be a rapid group buy with HUGE savings, so be ready.

Any news on this potential group buy?

I'd like to hear from Steven what his plans are for future firmware upgrades are. The very subtle ramping at the end of a focus movie is driving my focus pullers nuts on some things. Would be great to be able to turn it off.

Having the same issue, the gear needs to stop exactly when the handset wheel stops.

Hi everyone,

The motor has its own speed limit, the wireless transmition also has 0.01 second delay, the cinegears motors has 3 default damping setup, most of the motor has this Damping fuction turned off at manufacture, however, some of motors may still has the old Damping setting. I will post a video instruction about changing Damping set up soon.

My impression is that it is a parameter set in the motor driver set up. Some drivers have something called smoothing which is what this seems like. It's not the transmission delay. It's the perhaps third of a second that the motor takes to come to a nice smooth stop. We don't want that. It should stop the instant the handwheel stops. If it's abrupt, that's fine. That's what ACs are for, but for instance if you are dollying into a product shot, with minimal dof, the gear needs to stop when the hand wheel stops. The delay, even as short as it is fucks the AC on some things.

I see this as the only flaw in an otherwise kick ass system.

Hi Nick, thank you for the advice and comment on the motor, here I would like to make a further explanation for this.

The CINEGEARS standard motor is designed for most of the lens in the market, to prevent any damage to the lens, the motor will detect the lens damping before turning. This usually takes like 2mm and less than 0.01 sec to process. Then the motor will choose the best speed mode to run this lens.

However, we are now developing a new motor which could provide sharper movement on accelerating and landing. Although we do NOT encourage everyone to use this new model, for those who really need this kind motor, we can provide upgrade service when it is available.

It seems like a shame to have to come out with an entirely new motor when it is a software issue. I totally understand the smart feature of the motor when starting up, but there is no reason for it to be smart when it stops. It can be as dumb as the day is long.

At any rate it would be great to get it sorted out as as far as I can tell it is the only problem with the system.

By any chance, would there be another rapid group buy for the wireless follow focus?

Not at this time...since we've just had 2 recent Cinegears group buys, will need to wait a bit in respect to the group buy policy.

any owner here has some light power option to feed motor on DSLRs without DTAP or DTAP battery? (for sure i can add vmount plate and vmount battery but it is to heavy)

You can power it with a small Lipo battery. That's pretty much the lightest option I have found.

Throwing my hat into the ring on another group buy! For whenever it happens

I use some Freefly's Lipo batteries and velcro them to a mini cheese plate for 15mm rods. Lasts forever. You can find cheaper batts than Freefly's.

Also interested in the instructions to adjust the damping settings.
