  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy: Budget CRI 95 LED Strip Lights

Anyone have Brandon phone number? Sent emails to him many times and even pm but there have been no reply since

Likewise. I can only conclude that he must be swamped in dealing with all of the shipments.

I think I will simply add the extra strips to my order via the website; that might be more convenient for him.

Jack, I searched and don't see any recent email from you. You also never confirmed your shipping address and phone number:

IMPORTANT: Please send your SHIPPING ADDRESS and PHONE NUMBER to

Please, only send it to this email address.

I just received 100 more controllers today at the warehouse. We will be blasting these out all week next week! Get your shipping address confirmations to me ASAP!

Please email me at the above address.

***EDIT: Jack, I found the problem. I emailed the guy that took over your order, Trung. Waiting on a reply. I'm leaving the text above since there are still people that have not confirmed their shipping details.***

I got the email you sent to me 19 hours ago and will reply today. You also never confirmed your shipping address and phone number. Please look at my previous post.

Hi Brandon
Just checking in here. Do you have everything you need from me?

Likewise - it was a month ago I confirmed my address, haven’t heard a thing.

Hi,
is anyone else experiencing severe magenta shift with variable strips? In lightroom I'm getting something like -20 to -25 tint. With Lumu lightmeter it's something like -1/4 stop magenta. When I measure aputure amaran's they are neutral.

You are using variable strips, so the Duv is -0.0034 for 6000k and 0.0015 for 2700k. The daylight does have a slight magenta shift, which is pretty typical, and way better than green. For comparison, a daylight balance SkyPanel has Duv of -0.0057 and 0.0102 at 2800k, which is worse, and the latest Kino Celeb 250 has a Duv of 0.0037 at 5600k. The custom LEDs used with the mats that many people have upgraded to have no discernible color shift at all (0.0000 at 5600k and 0.0002 at 2700k). The Duv tells you how far the CCT deviates (think green or magenta shift) from a blackbody source. Other factors can also come into play including lenses used, sensor type, whether or not you're fading between two color temps with the variable strips, etc.

Times like this reaffirm why I'm glad you're a perfectionist, Brandon.

But in that case If I choose to power the variable strips at max (~4000K), they should be almost neutral? Problem is that I have that severe magenta shift at 4000K. If i have to use CTG or CTM gels for combining those lights to cheaper aputure lights which are neutral, I don't see the point of variable strips at all, since I have to use gels anyway. And how can we than match existing ambiance tungsten lighting with those strips?

What is the DUV for daylight strips I'm still waiting for?

Miha, anytime you are mixing two different color LEDs to create a third color temperature you take a hit with the color quality. It's true of every variable/bi-color/hybrid light there is without exception. It's even worse with RGB derived "white". The popularity of variable color temp lights show it's not really an issue for most people in the real world. People have been using these variable strip lights a lot, for almost 3 years, and I'm not aware of anyone needing to gel them. I've used them all throughout my film with no problems and I know of around a dozen other feature films that have used them. What camera are you using to shoot with?

I just saw you edited your post. The Duv will be a little better, but it sounds like you are using your variable strips as single color strips by powering both the warm and cool LEDs 100% instead of fading between the two colors. I don't see how you can expect that to match the color you get from a single color daylight source since they will vary in color temp by as much as 1500K-2000K.

I'm using ursa mini 4,6k, but have recently been shooting some tabletop photos with 7d mark2 using variable strips. I'm not mixing the lights when at 100%, this was the only light used in dark, but I noticed that white balance in lightroom was somewhere 3900K & -23 tint.
Other day I used one amaran 672 and two "kinoflo-like" led tubes with variable strips inside for a portrait photo. I had 3200 orange diffuser on 672 and variables set to match the color temp using LUMU color meter, but when I took a look in lightroom I noticed really big differences in skin tones (backlights were the variable tubes). Thankfully it's easy to fix that in photo, but if that would be a video shoot with same setup I'd have real problem fixing that in post.

And that is my concern - I understand everything is fine as long you are using just these strips and lights, but what to expect when mixing with sun daylight, tungsten bulb or even aputure amaran lights?

I think you missed my point; you are powering the warm and cool LEDs both at 100% rather than using them as variable strips. That has an affect on color. As will the diffusion on the "kino flo like tubes" you have the strips in.

Here's a picture of 4 rolls of strips on corrugated plastic sheets with diffusion.

Here's another setup where I used the same fixtures over the windows in the room and it looked great:

I was mixing daylight and sunlight in both setups and everything was fine.

I'm not mixing different white balances! I'm mixing two LED sources with same white balances (measured!) but your leds have much more magentas in it.

When I was powering both chips on 100% (~4000K), I was using just that light source, so no mixing.

I'll make sample later and post it here.

You might want to reread what I wrote. You don't seem to follow what I'm saying.
