  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy: Budget CRI 95 LED Strip Lights

I'm thinking of jumping in on this RGBW Group Buy.

I'll read all 242 pages tonight, but would someone be so kind to answer/confirm:

• can the row of RGB LEDs be removed if I only want daylight?

• is one roll enough to fill 1' x 2' Diva-size?

• is one roll enough for China ball use?

• LED strips can be powered directly by battery without controller as seen here?

Thank you in advance for any replies.

That's a lot of reading... :)

You can disconnected the 3 RGB wires and use only the daylight or dim the RGB down (or vice versa for only RGB).

One roll is 5m (16.4 feet). I'm making an China ball, and a few 1m (3.3ft) RGBW "tubes" (like single kino flo tubes), and a car kit.

They are 12V strips. Yes, you can use a battery, but you need a controller to use the RGB and you need a controller to adjust the brightness.

Hi Brandon,

Looks like everything has worked out very well with the Solaris. Awesome news.

I just checked my PayPal invoice and it says I'm down for 4 controllers and 12 rolls of D120CRI95.
Does the D stand for "DAYLIGHT" or "DUAL COLOUR"? I'm hoping it's Dual Colour. Please let me know if that's an issue.

Please also put me down for 2 rolls of RGBW.

AWESOME JOB MY GOOD MAN. This has all been well worth the wait. The daylight strips you sent me earlier in the year have been brilliant. Such clean colour rendition. Better than my Kino Flo gear for sure.

Stay well & cheers,

Judd

Yes, it took me 6+ hours [on iPhone 6s Plus] to binge-read all 243 pages of this discussion thread.

May I know:

• if only daylight is used on the RGBW strip, how is the intensity compared to original daylight-only strip?

• is there a way to intentionally pulse / flicker?

• are daylight-only strips available?

The 4' x 4' rig is done and looks amazing! 4 full rolls of daylight are on here.

I have bleached muslin on as diffusion and even still it's crazy bright!

The controller is nice and cool! It's working great at a full 40A load.

Any questions? :)

Brandon, aside from obvious 4 rolls and Ctrl+,

may I know all parts (connectors, etc.) necessary to construct this 4x4, please?

RGBW strips list updated:

A lot of people have been asking if they can order the RGBW CRI95+ Daylight strips that I've been testing...

Well, now you can. We will do a production run of these NEXT WEEK. These are "double" rolls and they go for $99 each. With these you can have a constant CRI 95+ daylight source and program in different RGB light effects like police lights, ambulance lights, nightclub lighting, etc. RGB and White brightness can be adjusted independently.

Here's the list so far:

RGBW CRI95+ Daylight Rolls

Michael Ou x 4
James Gil x 2
Jamon Lewis x 2
Curtis Pair x 4
Bob Gundu x 2
Manfred Lopez x 1
David Thomas Bailey x 4
Nate Haban x 2
James John Jetel x 4
Antony Newman x 1
David Kellermann x 2
Steven LT Smith x 3
Per Tschudi x 1
Zhen Jie Ho x 3
Brian Pascale x 1
Benji Dell x 2
Jack Pearce x 1
Paul Christopher Greene x 2
Olli Hautamäki x 4
Hernan Herrera x 1
Chase Allgood x 2
Judd Hyland x 2
Kenny Mosher x 2
Sam Windell x 2
Jeff Anderson x 2
Solomon Schechman x 1
Mike Smith x 4
Andy Roberts x 3 (+1 controller)
Nils Ruinet x ?

AGAIN, this shuts down on MONDAY. There are no extensions, no extras you can order later, and no planned second batches anytime soon. We are only doing this so everyone can hit the ground running with their controllers and so we can all make use of the new RGBW functionality. If you want in, tell me how many rolls you want and I'll add you to the list.

Can you email me about the specifics of your order? D120 would be daylight, but email me and we'll figure out a solution.

Great to hear! I totally agree about the color looking better than Kino Flos.

I haven't tested it with a meter, but the output is comparable, I'd say.

There will be when there are WiFi apps available.

Yes, but not for much longer.

It's a Scrim Jim Cine 4 x 4 frame, chloroplast for the LEDs, and Velcro to hold it stick the lights to the frame...

I'm working on it. It's a really specialized item and they aren't cheap, but there are so many situations where I would love to use them. The driver (power supply, basically) is the bottleneck. Not the LEDs themselves. I have a new prototype in the works.

Here's another shot of the first prototype:

~11,000 lumens.

Brandon, now that Solaris Ctrl+ for strip lights is shipping, any progress with this LED corn bulb in tungsten and in daylight?

Still waiting on my two controllers. Once I get them, then I'll order more strips. I don't care if I have to pay full price for the strips. I need these controllers before I spend another penny.

It's all good. Only doing it because so many people asked.

Hi Brandon,

I'd like to purchase two RGBW spools, two Solaris Ctrl+,
and associated bits and pieces (connectors, etc.) to make two Diva-size, please.

I'm also interested in some daylight spools....are the "soft" ones available soon?

Thank you,
Billy

Long day filming today. Again, used only Group Buy LED lighting gear. LOVE the results. Solaris Controllers included.

I used the LEDs to augment and simulate natural sunlight in the morning. I took most of the pictures after the sun was down though. In fact we had to use the LEDs to fully simulate the morning sun at the end of the day when the sun was down and it still worked fine.

The bulb in the lamp hanging from the ceiling is one of the prototype CRI95+ (98, actually) tungsten practical bulbs I have. There are daylight, too. We didn't use it for the "daylight" shot. I turned it on for the picture I took though.

The panels above the windows are much brighter and more color correct than LiteMats (based on CRI, Extended CRI, R9, and skin tone R values) and about 10% of the price.

Oh, and I used the Skintone Highlight OLPF all day for these scenes.

Tomorrow I will catch up RGBW invoices. Almost 2am here.
