Group Buy: Budget CRI 95 LED Strip Lights

Great idea!

Quick update on our custom variable solderless connector. They expect to be finished with it in 1 week. That means it won't cause us any delays!

I agree. Let's all brainstorm this. I'll post one method I use tomorrow. I'm sure we can come up with even better ones. Maybe we can even get the part we attach the LED strips to custom made for us.

Hey guys,

Just curious....how does everyone plan on mounting these lights on various objects? Velcro ties....ect? Just curious of the different various mounting methods you are all planning on using. I saw the pizza box method....and other creative ideas. Any safe ideas to mount these?

Do you mean how to put the boom rig together or how to power the lights?

Yeah, it would be great if we could bundle together China Ball on Boom Pole Kit. Or at least a list of links to each piece of gear needed to put it together.

I'm thinking Large, synthetic silk China Ball, extra long D-tap cable, cheap, lightweight boom pole, battery belt, and some way to wrap the lights around something that can be rigged inside of the china ball with a 1/4-20 thread.

Hi Brandon, Yes, as Carey says, would be good to see a Boom setup. From what I have read the strips are easy to set up but it would be great to get suggestions for the grip side.

Thanks

Hello Brandon,

Do you know if there will be a company (or you) that will sell those products (separate and in bundle) in the future?
I just did a test with this first order but if it's really worth it, I'm sure A LOT of people around me will be interested.

almost ready to order:
does this

1 Variable strip
1 variable strip controller
1 Power kit

I think buying the power kit is cheaper since the dtap cable alone is almost that price no?

The strips come with double sided tape on them. I've stuck the lights to cardboard before and then used tape and/or velcro to attach that to different things. Walls, ceilings, etc.

In this podcast interview cinematographer Chayse Irivin talks about how he uses strip lights:

Part 1: http://wanderingdp.com/podcast/twdp-008-dp-chayse-irvin-discovering-style-part-1/
Part 2: http://wanderingdp.com/podcast/twdp-009-dp-chayse-irvin-part-2/

(Great interview in general.)

I setup my boom rig with the following:

http://www.evsonline.com/lantern-lock-24-heavy-duty-paper-lantern-china-ball-frame.html

...and a paint roller pole for a boom (all I had access to).

The laternlock rig has a 5/8" pin which fits perfectly with the grip head. The grip head is pretty heavy though out on the end of a pole. I'm sure we can come up with a better solution. I set mine up Macgyver style.

Right now I'm focused on getting everyone their orders ASAP. We'll see where it goes from there.

The Power Kit is a must have in my opinion.

133 people have been invoiced so far! Only 36 more to go!

If you haven't finalized your order yet, please do so ASAP.

If you did not get a confirmation email from me earlier this week, please PM me. (First take a look in your SPAM folder...)

If you missed out on this Group Buy and want to be an alternate PM me. If I'm unable to reach anyone you get their spot...

How is this even a deal? It's not. You can buy these anywhere online. People have been using these in their computer gaming rigs for years, and you can buy them in 5 meter spools. Whether its Amazon, Ebay, Alibaba, or some third party source. Also, I see that the first post states that these will get you a CRI rating of 95, but a tungsten LED, or a tungsten color temperature will not get you a 95 CRI. A color temperature of around 5500 kelvin can achieve that, because it's color rendering index is truer to sunlight, so maybe the daylight LEDs will get you a 95 CRI but definitely not the other ones. By the way if you guys want lights like these, just do a search on Ebay or Amazon. These lights are everywhere, for lower prices.

By the way, off topic and just for the record, the notion that 5600k temperature is daylight temperature is misleading, even if that's what is used today as the measurement in today's devices. After 5500k, which is truer* to daylight, the whiteness starts to gradually fall off into blue.

Well I'm pretty sure if you give some links to the strips you're referring to, many people here might be interested. From what I've seen so far, most if not all of the led strips you'll find on the sites you mention will not be suitable for video (or maybe they will be if you like that greenish hue you'll get, Matrix style). They would also need to be as bright as the ones offered here, of course.

Regarding what you say about tungsten LEDs not being able to have a high CRI, that's just plain wrong. Here is a link to a test done recently by a very serious official french organisation, the CST, that tested under the same conditions many LED fixtures. Sorry it's only in french, but the numbers don't need to be translated. Here is the link to that document :
http://www.cst.fr/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/étude_projecteur_LED.pdf
Look at the numbers under "IRC", which is the french for CRI. The Cineo Trucolor for example gets up to 98 in its tungsten version. If you look at page 147 and up, you'll see that some other tungsten LED fixtures have very high CRIs.

You can also check here :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_rendering_index
You'll see that tungsten bulbs are rated at a 100 CRI. This is confirmed in the document I mentioned before, they also tested a tungsten (halogen) fixture which was rated at a CRI of 100.

Liang, if it really is so easy to find professional quality LED strip lights, then Lite Gear would not be selling them for $300 to $400 a roll.

I'm guessing you think $10 dimmers on Amazon/eBay will be flicker free too?

If you want to discuss how 'gaming rig' LED lights can be used for professional cinematography, then please start a new thread for it. This is not the place.

Thanks.

And regarding this, 5600K is just an average. There is not one "true" daylight color temperature, it varies all the time depending on time, location, weather, and it can range from under 3000K at sunset to more than 7000K during an overcast day. So you're right in saying that 5600K as a daylight reference can be misleading, but wrong in saying that 5500K is any truer than 5600K. It is just a reference, not an absolute truth.

Same thing for tungsten fixtures btw, most bulbs are more around 3000-3100K (and often even less) depending on the bulb's age and quality.

You write with much confidence, but your statements are not aligned with facts. Open your mind to the possibility
that you are wrong about this subject matter.

The fact that so many professional filmmakers are buying these from Brandon is a good measure as to their worth.

CRI is not related to color temperature. Put simply, it is a quality rating of the light output. An incandescent light with a color temperature of 3200K can have a CRI of 100.

I'm not sure you are understanding the meaning of CRI here. It has nothing to do with color temperature. Tungsten sources and the sun both have a CRI of 100.

I'm jumping on a plane in ~8 hours and I won't be fully back online until Monday evening Eastern US time. If I'm slow to respond to your email or post during this time, it's because I'm probably somewhere over the Atlantic.

We have 30 more people that need to confirm their orders. It would be great to get the last of the invoices out on Monday, so we can get our production run started before Christmas.

Thanks!

I'm thinking of making some light weight box to attach the strips to ceilings, does anyone have experience with this?
For instance, what kind of (temporary) double sided tape would you use so it doesn't leave marks but strong enough to hold it?
Maybe add a ring to attach to practical light hooks already on many ceilings?

Thanks Maik,
there are a few nice practical tips here and there in the video, but I had a visit to the hardware store today and version 1.0 will take different route then mdf (too heavy and not a long lasting quality material).

Just something i stumbled upon a few months ago came back into mind:
