Grainy Blacks

Hi there.

We shot the opening scenes of this web short https://youtu.be/xqc6zcI8K4s in the dark on a Red Scarlet in 4K. The lighting was adequate but the images were quite grainy when we brought them into Premiere. We are looking for some post production advice on either a quick plugin that we can use to correct the images to reduce the grain or any other advice that you could give to make the blacks blacker and the faces more clear. Sorry I don't at present have the camera settings we shot at. Mostly just looking for a quick fix.

Thoughts?

Resolve paid version has an OK denoiser.. for premiere I think the best one is neat video.. haven't used in a while though, but it usually gives nice results...

Neat Video works a treat, a colorist with Neat Video would be even better.

Personally, for a gritty zombie thing, I think grain is not only acceptable but desirable, but it's hard to tell how grainy it is through the high compression of 1080p YouTube.

But yes as others have said, Resolve has some good tools. Try that in a pinch.

Resolve SNR in Enhanced mode can do wonders, but it takes a lot of time to process. Neat Video is even more time-consuming.

Often noise is mostly confined to blacks or specific color channels, and it's possible to grab just that part of the picture and apply the NR just to that specific problem.

There's no easy answer, since a lot of noise issues have to be evaluated on their own. Underexposure can make it worse. Lack of fill light won't help. A great colorist can help in some situations, but nobody is a miracle worker.

I think it’s fine for what your doing

Neat video is the go to tool if you got to much noise normally use it to remove the heavy noise and then add a finer grain ontop to give it a structure.

But from looking at my iphone this looks fine. I would leave as is.

neat video beat resolve noise removal tools and is cross platform so I think you can use it in pretty much all apps.
