  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Grading SCARLET Footage

No disrespect, I spent about 2 minutes doing mine - but they look pretty similar to each other don't they?

Please, give me hard criticism on mine so I know what you don't like about it.

My biggest self-criticism would be that the vests are different colors - one is blue the other is black. There is a slight contrast difference between the two as well...

Slapped them into photoshop to try and do what the original poster was doing.

I will try my hand with resolve later and use the scopes like I should be.

Sorry no disrespect but no one of you guys is making a good grading out of this picture.

the image straight out of the Epic is really good for Grading, But grading is a professionnal job , not an amateur one .

Not being defensive here, but I have been working as a professional colorist for some time and my advice about working with the source R3D over this DPX export stands when it comes to correction and grading.

@ Madjid
Not everyone has the luxury of giving all of his projects to a "professional" colorist, i happen to color all of my projects alone and i do want to be a chef in my own kitchen. Maybe my kitchen isn't as big as yours but we do business well, because of that especially: everything from pre to post. out of one company.

That's the reason i want to learn from professionals like Phil and Dan.

@Phil thanks for sharing your post workflow. I have to admit that i'm pretty spoiled probably coming from grading directly in Premiere with Colorista II.
So there will definitly be a new Workflow coming along with working on the Scarlet. (RED for that matter)

@Dan your grade looks natural, but i have problems with the skin-tones of the red. they seem very flat for some reason, do you know where this comes from?
Is there any chance of shooting a chroma du monde and then working with The WFM to get a "automatised" natural grade throughout your shoot?

Take a look here for a range of grading examples with Redcode raw and Redcine-X pro.

There are samples you can download and RCX can be downloaded from RED support here.

You are wasting your time trying to grade these mediocre DPX samples. It is not a good work flow for RED. They do not give any indication of the range of possibilities with the raw footage.
Try grading original raw files as you would with a digital still camera and you will begin to learn what RED is about.
