  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Got weapon flipped handle forward.

But that won't work if Weapon is smaller and the height of the Red Brick is unable to fit on the quickplate when using the top handle.

Wouldn't that be awkward while filming to have the handle facing forward if the monitor is on the attachment of the handle? I just don't see how the Red Brick / DSCM2 V-Lock and Top handle will work on the Weapon, it seems like a design flaw if batteries can't be mounted when using the top handle in it's standard position?
Or do they fit? That's my question really, can I use the DSCM2 V-Lock module together with the Red Bricks and top handle in their "standard" setup? All answers seems to be that I need to switch, unscrew, use side handles or something else, but having a top handle mounted in the standard position is like the basic setup I will always have. My camera case is set up to be good to go as a fast setup. The top handle I use now makes it possible to just grab the camera, mount the LCD, Battery and media and just shoot. I want to make my setup effective and time saving, so the less "building" whenever I open the camera case, the better. So my question is really if I can use the Weapon in the same config as I do with my Dragon right now. If not, what's the alternative so that I can?

Possibly, if you ask nicely maybe RED can make your weapon a few inches long so you can have it as you like. :)

Personally I like the camera to be as small as possible. If that means it´s so small a handle does not fit with certain accessories so be it, and also there is the little metal handle you can use instead. and with XL´s there is no issue.

side note: I really like the old RED ONE 19mm mounts for stacking things behind the camera. I dont think much of this module stuff, as things tend to be swapped and changed around, faster than the modules can be made. So better to mount it on those rod mounts and just get some longer rods and put things on a train behind camera clamping on to the rods.

and on the picture you see how short that handle would have to be if you would put on a battery module right at the back of the camera. It would be a little stubby thing ending right after the "R".

Don't tell them, I´m thinking of CNC a few "ultimate rubber handle replacement".

Something thats modular and can go from being a top handle to work as a top plate and also 19 mm top rods, EVF holder etc... that fits in the back threads where the rubber handle is seated on the stop start handle. :)

;) Sounds like a smart move.

The thing that worries me on the V-Lock expander is the space between the battery rail and the connexions block. It seems a bit narrow and I'm not sure GMP batteries will fit for example. So I'm interested in that solution http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?140397-New-Movcam-DSMC2-accessories-power-display-audio
All V-mount batteries will fit. You can hotswap the battery without shutting down the camera as there is a 3mn integrated battery inside the module. And I guess it will be a good solution for the top handle + battery problem.

Yeah, I just feel that there are a few things about the V-lock expander that I'm not so sure about. It feels like the design isn't working in any way. If you use the Red Bricks, they are too high to work with the top handle and if you change to "lower" batteries they will probably be too wide to fit with the connections. It would be nice to hear a word from Red about these things, because from what I can see it seems quite DOA as a module :confused1:

Have not seen that picture before. But from looking here (holding up a fat blue shape battery towards the back of the camera I think the width is not an issue... the hight to the handle is. But then the handle can be flipped forward. Monitor can be on noga arm or just ditch the handle who needs it? the camera is so freaking small as it is so one can not really expect to fit much clutter on the top. I will stack FIZ and video transmitter and all the rest behind the camera for that reason.

Edit: whats that V lock thing with the Dtap? does it fit on the base I/o module? why is that not in the store? I´m thinking as I already have a base I/O module then better to get that then Vlock with all the outputs, much be cheaper no?

The easy thing would be to make a little rossette thing so the handle could point sideways.

As Ugo mentioned, that's the Movcam hotswap module that fits onto the RED 'DSMC² Base I/O V-Lock Expander'.

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?140397-New-Movcam-DSMC2-accessories-power-display-audio

If it provides enough clearance for larger top handles it could be a good solution for some setups, while the hotswap capability alone could make it a worthwhile module.

Not sure if they can or will be making one that fits onto the non V-lock Base I/O Expander or straight onto the back of the body like the RED Base I/O Expanders do.

Aha, did not know about that one thought it was two versions of the red V-lock module.

The hot swap box thing I dont get. To me it´s far more convenient to have a D-tap to To AC lemocable and just put that on a third battery that is only used while swapping. Or does it not even work to use such cable on the fresh battery coming in and remove the cable with the new battery is in place? As to put that extra size on the camera. which that module comes with does not seem to be the best option just to be able to hot swap if you ask me.

Hello Bjorn,

WOW, WOW, WOW!

I just pushed and pulled this R3D in RedCine and... WOW! I can't believe how good it looks and how usable it is even at 6400 ISO.

Thanks for posting this. I am beyond impressed. I can't wait to get my Weapon.

+1
Just did the same, and was also very impressed. We may have more joy than just 1 stop of even more happyness than with our Epic-Dragon!

I guess there are pros and cons to all the different possible camera configurations.

Putting extra size on the camera with that Movcam hot-swap module can also increase clearance for wider batteries and longer top handles, as well as giving more mounting points if you add on it's detachable top-plate.

Interesting question about the other possible methods for hot-swapping though.

In fact, I'll second the question -

Can you hot-swap V-mount batteries with a cable temporarily running from the D-tap of the fresh battery into the DC input of the 'DSMC² Base I/O V-Lock Expander'?

Or to be more precise - Using a 'DSMC² Base I/O V-Lock Expander' that has a V-mount battery connected, can I connect a D-tap to DC Lemo cable (eg. http://woodencamera.com/RED/RED-Wea...Scarlet-Dragon-Weapon-Braided-Flex-Cable.html) to the D-tap of a second V-Lock battery and the DC input of the 'DSMC² Base I/O V-Lock Expander', then remove the first V-lock battery from the 'DSMC² Base I/O V-Lock Expander' and attach the second V-lock battery battery to it, then disconnect the D-tap to DC Lemo cable, without losing power?

I have no Vlock module to test..

But this is my hot swap module... it also double as my gimbal power solution. Cost about 3USD + a lipobattery. You need a pair of scissors and a pair of pliers. Cut the cable of the AC (you get an extra in the upgrade) then buy lip / hobby 12V male and female connectors and put on the cable. Your AC adaptor still works as should and viola. the power port or lemo connector does not break when somebody pull the cable when running on AC instead this connector detach just like your mac laptop magnetic charger and you got a stump to use with lipo batteries and also use when you hot swap your XL´s.

And most of all you don´t need to build weight on the camera to get hot swap functionality.

And again from looking at the camera I think you need some crazy wide V-lock batteries to cover the ports on the side. Is that even a known issue or is it just what people guesstimate?

It's a nice setup but i think I would prefer the internal 3mn battery of the module ^^
Concerning the size of the batteries it's a guesstimate. But the rails seem to be very close from the sides.

Ordered that also but it does not fly with XL´s.

Thanks for the info Björn, if it works with the XL Module, it's probably the same with the V-Lock I/O module too.

I think it's safe to assume you can do the same kind of hot-swap using just two batteries instead of using a third battery like in your example, but would be good if someone with a V-lock module could confirm everything switches over alright. Would rather just use a hot-swap cable than a module or third battery myself, if possible.

I've only seen one picture of a V-Lock battery partially blocking a HDMI connection on one of the DSMC² I/O Expander modules, so yeah I doubt it will be much of an issue for most people.

Nice results correcting the test pics btw

Edit - In fact, after searching in vain for that picture, that I just saw in passing, it was most likely a different battery type and mount I was remembering.

Björn,

thanks for the insight!

One question for you...can the lemo port on the LEMO ADAPTER A for the EVF/LCD be rotated?

In the configuration shown in the pics, if we use angled connectors they're sticking out of the camera profile...and we know it's bad, right? ;)

You choose to use straight connectors and even in that instance it's prone to fail...the best would be angled connectors angled towards the back or the front of the cam...no?

What do you think!?

The lemo adaptor a A as it called only goes two ways on camera... Top and side. You can not mirror it. as the connector is only possible to connect one way. So only as in the two pictures... But I think, have not tested it, if you got the right tools you can detach the lemo connector and spin it 90 degrees to make the 90 deg lemo not sticking in your ear :)

Any other things you guys want to know I´m on render watch here (looking at people, that is looking at renders) so shoot if you got something that can make my time go faster lol..

We need some words from Red about this... all I can see is that wider batteries can't attach and the Red Bricks don't fit with the top handle.

Do you have any Red Bricks? I don't think that the battery attach at that height, the connection at the bottom of the battery should be at the bottom of the V-lock expander
