  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GOPRO Hero3 - 4K

I don't know....I honestly think it would look great at 2K and below with Epic. Obviously the DR is the main difference, but for those impossible shots I think it will do wonders!!!

Just think...2-3 years from now we will be talking about a true 4K 24-30fps GoPro! And I'm sure Canon will still be trying to charge 12K for a 4K DSLR hahaha

Well, this could sure be great for my BTS stuff, but I pretty much doubt I'll ever use them to intercut footage with EPIC... ;)

I have a nice relationship with the product guys at gopro, so keep the spit balls coming. Someone is listening.

I do too...

BTW, thanks for starting this thread Dino ;)

Well, obviously GoPro didn't buy Cineform for nothing... so the obvious next question is:

Do a high-end version of the Hero - and get us a rugged Blackmagic competitor with 48fps 4K RAW within 1 year?
-or-
Let Moore's Law work its magic - and get us a GoPro Hero 4 with 48fps 4K RAW and 240fps 1080p, within 2 years, for under $1000?

Both would be fine with me :)

I think that there are actually more lessons here for the other cam manufacturers in terms of lessons... GoPro is doing a lot of stuff right! eg:

1. Cheap, plastic, light weight body cameras are the real extreme conditions rockstars. Not chunks of heavy metal surrounding electronics that will be out of date in a few years. The only thing "extreme" about big-ass metal boxes is price, weight and ego.

2. Stereo sync isn't an expensive add-on. At Cinegear I chatted with a Sony rep who was telling me how expensive it would be to put stereo sync in a FS700... and I just pointed at the massive GoPro booth opposite and asked "so why can they do it cheaply?"

This camera is a game changer. It's a wake-up call. It makes it obvious to anybody that when a small plastic toy looking camera starts doing 4k (Even if it's a slow frame rate) then 4k is getting Mainstream and going to be demanded now. It's in the vocabulary so to speak.
When companies like black magic come into the game (they have $20 million of camera parts sitting in inventory waiting for their fixed sensors to ship their generation one camera) things are going to get moving fast.
On another note, it's going to be interesting how to get over 1K on a camera that's mounted to your head. But that's another story.

Maybe they could put a proper dome port on the housing? Can't get even VHS quality through a flat port underwater.
Other than that, sounds great to me. I would like to get one or two for BTS.

Already got mine :) :) :)

Good point...obviously a flat port can create problems in the image - refraction, radial distortion, and chromatic abberation

There are some 3rd party accessory manufacturers now making wet mounting dome converters for dive usage with the GoPro Dive Housing, including domes incorporating red filters.

I'm assuming those wet mount dome port solutions, which go onto the GoPro Dive Housing, will also work with the Hero3 because GoPro has said their Dive Housing will work with the new camera. Even though the original GoPro housing will work underwater it has serious focus issues. The Dive Housing focuses much better than the original housing.

Here's a test reel for the GoPro Dive Housing without a wet dome port

Here are some more aftermarket GoPro accessory tests:

None of the above videos was shot with the new GoPro Hero3. I'm guessing that the new camera in the Dive Housing, with a wet mounting red filter dome port will generate some pretty good images. I'm also guessing that the GoPro Hero3 incorporates some in-camera algortthms meant to minimize refraction, radial distortion, and CA when the camera is used with the GoPro Dive Housing, which has a flat port. The 2.7k/29.97fps and 1440p/48fps resolutions may look very good with the Dive Housing equipped with a wet mounting dome red filter attached. I'll look forward to someone testing something like that out to see the results, not on YouTube, but in its native resolution on a good monitor.

Obviously hardcore underwater shooters aren't going to choose a GoPro Hero3 solution for their A camera. But as a B camera for them, with proper accessories, in certain situations it just may produce some very good images. The camera should definitely a good B or C camera, and POV camera solution for professional terrestrial shooters who work in certain genres of production - for example mobile EFP genres (action sports, music, documentaries, lifestyle, cultures, etc.).

Thanks Pawel! You definitely know a lot more than I do about dive housings, accessories for them, and techniques of shooting underwater.

I do have some peripheral water shooting knowledge though. I've personally shot water sports (surfing, jetski, sailboarding, etc.) for many years now - on and just under the water surface with various electronic cameras (including Red One and Epic) in splash housings. For high end shots I'll obviously continue to shoot those shots with Epic. But also for surface zone splash housing sports work I'm really interested in testing out the GoPro Hero3 inside the GoPro Dive Housing with a wet mounting dome red filter port - in their resolutions of 2.7k/29.97fps, 1440p/48fps, and 1080p/60fps. I'll mount the whole rig on "handlebars" and see how it goes.

With tiny, higher resolution new imaging options like this its way fun to just go out and experiment and see what we can come up with ;)

I've been a fan of using the GoPro for quick and dirty timelapse cams. A network connection would be nice to send images...

I am happy they are offering the Protune firmware update for the Hero 2. Just in time as I'll need the 24fps mode for a project. Looking forward to trying out the 3 as well.

we have been using the protune since late MAY with great result!
