  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GoPro Hero3 4K or Scarlet 4K?

You know whats sad though... the new $400 gopro shoots at a higher and I think finally a useable resolution at 120fps...

I think it will be a nice little unit to have that I can throw into a dangerous situation that I would not want to throw my Scarlet in. I have only used a Go Pro in the past in situations where my finish is in 1080p.

For personal use, I dont dare bomb down a Black Diamond with a Scarlet attached to my chest.
I can handle snapping a snowboard, but not a few ribs with that armor plated beauty ;)

Man, just got my hand wet to slap the OP on the side of the head. Good thing I say the preview of "just kidding"!!!

Those rotating fishpole helmet mount shots are pretty cool, although I'd image that it takes some getting used to having something swinging from your helmet while doing extreme sports! Some cool stuff, although its a bit depressing, as I see videos like this and I see the footage and the edits that I would love to be doing! Makes it kinda hard to command-tab back to my corporate stuff... *sigh*

I'm probably going to get one, or many if funding goes through on a shoot that I'm possibly developing into a feature. (Scarlet 4k -> 2k, gopro 2.7k -> 2k finish)

On the short, I used a super 8mm cam as a crash cam on a demolition derby car. I don't think I would want to put my scarlet in that type of situation

Hopefully in a year or so, they'll have one or an update for the 3 that has 4K at a useable frame rate. You can shoot 4K stills on the Hero2 for time lapse. So why is the 4K only 15 frames, I guess so they can get you to buy a new one in a year? haha. Just got two Hero2's with Screens and a 3D kit in the spring, so I'll wait for the next one that can do 4K at 24.

I believe the Hero3 is great news for RED and Scarlet owners. 4K requires a full-ecosystem and the GoPro fills a very important niche by going where no other camera can go. There are tons of people out there that MUST use a GoPro for certain shots and without a 4K option for those shots, there is little incentive to shoot the rest of their production, film, commercial, documentary, etc. in 4K.

I just can't wait for an iPhone 7 with 4K video!
