  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good wide lens for Scarlet, with Canon mount?

I own the Tokina 11-16 and it's a heck of a deal. However, that Zeiss 15mm f/2.8 is extremely nice. Don't know if I used a higher quality ultra wide still lens. Seriously. And I've tested them all.

Phil with the Zeiss and Scar;let at 120fps, how do you feel about this combo?

I have the Tokina and I have a hard time with 120fps footies :(

I would start a new thread but Ill throw it in here and see others opinions.

Im having a hard time with this Tokina 11-16 DX as far focusing goes.

Im not talking infinity here just anything gin between.

I stopped using lens for a while thanks to the Rokinon Cine set I have.

This time around Im outside (no ND) and just cant seem to focus with this lens.

Is there a Cine replacement for this lens under 1500 USD?

Sorry about the lare reply Eric, somehow my radar missed this one.

I agree with Jacek on that Sigma.

In terms of locking focus with the 11-16mm you have to remember its a still lens with a shorter focus throw and to compound issues it's an ultra wide. It does however represent a good value for what it does.

The other funky thing is the small resolution of 120fps Scarlet-X footage and using an ultra wide like this. Using a lens in the 24+mm range will often yield better results shooting 120fps at that resolution.

The 11-16mm is a good lens for the price, but it is not a great lens overall.

And just a note on that Zeiss prime. We are talking the difference between a value zoom and a pretty amazing prime design. It is noticeably better in many ways.

Thanks again Phil, great tips here :)

My last test run I didnt use any ND filters.

Would that have helped?

Cheers Eric. ND filters don't improve your image quality in terms of resolution. So no, that wouldn't help. Generally speaking, any filter degrades your image quality. Sometimes that's not perceptible though. Even an optical clear filter could technically lose some detail.

Don't get too "OCD" on that concept if you can avoid it. Just be aware that if you suddenly stack 3 filters for instance that you'll likely see some effects you may not want.

Thanks Phil I figured NDs would degrade just hoping that the focus issue is something else.

I know the lens wasnt much but compared to my Rokinons, it just sits there doing nothing.

I dont have any other lenses in that style (AF) so my experiences with the Rokinon Cines has me avoiding similar lenses.

I will try and find a Sigma at local store for testing.

I really like my 21mm zeiss cp2. At 21mm it is wide angle but doesn't have that wide angle feel. Seem people don't like it at T2.9, when the rest of the cp2's are t2.1 ... but I use that lens for all my behind the scene shots. If i would do the purchase again i'd probably go with the 28mm which is T2.1 .
