  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good news...

Second this. And a question: they will be delivered in quantity or there will be a (slow) production ramp, (as per the 18-85?).

There is always a ramp up... but the primes will ramp MUCH faster than the 18-85.

Hi Jim.....will be there any chance in the future to develop AF/AE lenses for the 2/3 rd systems? I know this is part of the 8x fixed feautures, but it would be great to have it on primes too...

Jim, in the Lens forum there is talk of a German set of 6 lenses for $2000 each. I heard that they are very good optically and only fair mechanically. It makes for an interesting comparison with the Red primes. When will you post the lower than $4000 per lens price? I just took delivery of two Red Ones so I hope I'm not in deep doody by asking so directly. I just need to decide what to do.

Phil... welcome to the RED program. I saw your order get shipped. Hope you are happy with the cameras.

We think that options for our customers is a very good thing. I can't say anything about the new set from Germany (I think there are more than one coming), only about our set. We spent as much effort on the mechanical design as we did the optical design. These lenses take a beating and need to last to be serious "professional" quality. Our 18-85mm zoom was the 1st to showcase our Pro program.

At $2k per lens, one has to take a good look at what they are doing, just like all the others coming at NAB. We are comfortable that our lenses will be wickedly competitive when all things are considered. I have to say I'm a bit skeptical of what exactly can be built for that price. No doubt good optics can be accomplished but I have to see the mechanicals for myself to be comfortable. My instincts tell me that, like our 18-50mm zoom, some compromises need to be made to keep the price down. We'll see.

I don't want to trash anyone who is adding new possibilities for our RED customers. The more competition there is, the better choices we all have.

Having said that, I would strongly encourage anyone buying a set of lenses to see ALL of them before making a decision... including ours. :-)

Jim and anyone else--I wish you guys had a few sets set aside as demo units that could be sent for 1 day to people like us not in LA or NY. Have you considered something like this?

It's very hard to actually look at them, like you said, without having access. Since RED won't be at NAB, I guess that won't happen.

So...is renting them (probably from someone not in-state) the only option for us to truly see the quality and demo the units?

I have been waiting for comment from Red and Jim on the "State of Glass" this year, and Jim's post did not disappoint. Jim calmly and clearly discusses Red's upcoming offerings and the competition's. Competition is perhaps not quite the right word, as Red's success has spawned this resurgence in lens-making, so there is a partially dependent relationship. The same is true with accessories, with great companies like Element Technica and others capitalizing on the opportunities Red affords. To me it seems that Red hasn't discouraged this in any way, even though Red makes it's own accessories as well. A healthy ecosystem has sprung up based on a Red environment; Jim seems to understand the mutually beneficial dynamics.

I think Jim's comments are a good guide to those who are looking to buy glass this year. One of the less obvious factors to consider is long-term durability, and Red seems to be striking a really nice balance between that and price with the 18-85 and upcoming primes, not to mention resolution, speed, etc. I'll be looking at all offerings before moving forward, just as Jim suggests. What a great time for all of us!

IMHO it isn't so much about how you feel when you write the check as how you feel one year after you made the purchase.

Hi,

Buy the best and you only cry once.

Hello Jim,

I saw your earlier post stating the new RED® Primes were being designed "fresh" with the digital sensor in mind. I was wondering if you could tell me if there will be any compromise as to using them on a analog film camera, in addition to the RED? I suppose I'm asking both in terms of an optical compromise and/or if there will be any physical issues like clearance (such as the rear element hitting the camera mirror etc)?

And lastly, if so, would that just included certain focal lengths?

Thanks.

I'd love to hear how you approach the project specifically for digital as opposed to analog

I'm over simplifying things here, but If I'm not mistaken, film is more 'forgiving' in terms of the way the emulsion receives the light, as opposed to a digital sensor where every spectrum of light needs to converge and lay 'just right and flat' on those pixels (otherwise more issues with chromatic aberration, fringing, blurring, etc?...) perhaps, especially on wide angle lenses and the outer part of the frame...

... but I'm far from an expert, and it has been some time since I looked into any of this.... it's one big circle of confusion on many levels, I'm sure...

Having said that, I would strongly encourage anyone buying a set of lenses to see ALL of them before making a decision... including ours. :-)

What opportunity will there be to demo the Red Primes ? A set at Red HQ that we can try in the Lobby or do you have something else planned ?

18-85 and 300mm looked nice so I'm not too worried.

We will have a few sets at NAB even though we won't have a booth. We'll post where they will be in plenty of time before the show begins. We also plan to have a lens projector available to showcase the optical quality of these primes and will invite anyone to bring whatever lens they want for comparison.

Sounds like a good plan, Thanks.

would i be wrong in saying that the Red lenses are calibrated more specifically for the Red sensor

I can say this...

We have a new design with ultra high resolution with very little breathing (highest standards).

True internal focusing.

32mm image circle for 5k imagery.

24/48 hour warranty repair capability.

Each lens is hand assembled with each element CNC machine matched to mechanicals.

Edge to edge sharpness..

Even transmission center to edge.

Designed around RED camera system/RED OLPF for best performance.

Each lens tested on RED ONE camera for system MTF.

And since talk is cheap... we will bring the lens projector. Seeing it live is something else. That is why Mark got so excited when he came by.

Hope that helps.

Jim
