  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good news...

I hate to be the broken record... but how does this effect/push up the delivery of the 18mm?

18mm (and others) are on an accelerated pace... as fast as we can go.

Don't expect the lens bubble to burst quite yet, it will deflate a bit but good glass will always command a price. I'd expect the Zeiss lenses to command a premium based on name and reputation alone.

Everything changes when the charts get published...

thats what they said about housing prices this past summer :)

Im not saying they wont hold some value...it's still great glass... but $40K to $60K for 20 year old MK II and MK III 5 lens sets (see classified section for several in the $50K range) when they were $15 to $25K just 2 to 3 years ago...HAD to end sometime...

when you add Laguun's lenses and IBE' (June) to this news and who knows what else will show up at NAB... its simple supply and demand... used ZEISS glass is going to and should come back to earth..

Well ... I'll be at the Reduser event at NAB ... and if these ship in time ... I'll be sure to have one of my sets with me ...

Hey Mark, what is the Reduser event about? I haven't seen anything on it. Is this similar to last year?

I'm going to NAB on the 20th or 21st...mostly to check on lenses. Let me know, OK?

If I could afford these, I would buy them so quick. They look awesome.

Congrats Jim & Co. Thats great news.

Jim, I have every confidence that the lenses will be stellar performers, but... When it comes to producers and lenses, there are only three names they know, Angenieux, Cooke and Zeiss. I sincerely hope the Red primes and the rest of the new glass available soon changes that. But it's gonna take time regardless of the quality, but more importantly it's going to take units in volume in the field.

I agree completely... and as much respect as I have for Evin, I think it will come sooner than later as well. That huge surge in PL glass this last year was a direct result of RED hitting the market in numbers, and when high quality lenses are available that don't completely break the bank, it will very quickly change the dynamic of that entire part of the system too. Just good old supply and demand. Sure, there will be some who swear by Cooke and Zeiss - there are still some who won't shoot RED - but the vast majority are going to jump on these puppies so fast simply because a) they're more affordable than the alternatives and b) they're available. Part of the reason the superspeeds jumped so ridiculously in price in the last 18 months was due to the fact that they're a bitch to find. Assuming that RED wants to sell as many sets of lenses as possible, they'll make them in good amounts and the prices will come down simply due to the fact that there is product out there that you can actually get your hands on. Of course, quality is going to be the determining factor - the lenses won't sell if they don't perform well - but with Jim and Mr. Offhollywood guy and whoever else saying they're the next best thing since sliced bread, I can't imagine they suck. :-)

The price reduction is not only great news for us customers, but really reflects nicely on the way RED runs its business. They would likely sell many sets of lenses keeping the price as they are, but to strive for ultimate quality AND pass the savings onto the customer is so rare in this day and age. I'm just glad it's the best company that's doing it!

Some of the best news to get on Saturday!

Great news, I can't wait to see them make images!

Thanks for reducing the price point !!!!
