  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good mic for ambient sound

Sorry for the base answer... But it depends. Not knowing your budget, or other gear, workflow.

Many times I use an MKH30/MKH50 or MKH30/MKH60 combo for that type work.

I just got the Stereo VideoMic X from Rode and it's kick ass. Highly recommend it. $799

Those are very, very good mics. But I can't think of a worse place to put a microphone than on top of a Red camera, near the fan.

A decent selection of non-directional condenser microphones will fit the bill. The players are: Schoeps and Neumann on the high end, Sennheiser and Rode in the middle, Shure or Audio Tehnica on the budget end. Off camera solutions such as portable recorders with onboard stereo mics such as Zoom or Tascam can also be used.

I use a Sennheiser MKH20 (basically that's what i was told to use by some major guys). It also has low frequency and an attenuator switch on the mic, which i have found very useful as sometimes you get rumbles holding the mic in the field and also when close micing crashes/clangs/doors the attenuator comes in handy. I've noticed some of the high end guys use km84's, but i use km184's sporadically. I also have some contact mics. I end up using the mkh20 for ambient noises i think most of the time since its so flexible and has low background noise. Gearslutz has a remote recording forum which I have found invaluable.

I also have this little rubber handle grip & tripod attachment for the mkh20 (fits a bunch of mics), and find i end up using that in almost every case (i.e. more then often I find any mic could be used, since it's more about knowing the mic and positioning it correctly).

I have 2 Rode variety microphones NTG 2 & 3. If informal test indicates the mics are 90% responsive to a comparable Sennheiser. Been useful in utility non narrative situations.

We tried a 8060 on camera (smaller than the 416) and is was interesting... We used it in a cradle on a long nogu arm. Due to the small size of the epic I am going to try the ambient tiny mic http://www.ambient.de/produkte/ambient-recording/mikrofone/tinymike.html

I spoke to EverythingAudio about making a cable that goes straight into the epic but also actively steps the 48v down the 5v (may be wrong about the 5v)... I am going to wait and see what happens with 'VV' 1st..

I tend to switch to dynamic mics when working with very loud sources.
